A method of analysis for 3-methoxypterostilbene [trans-3,3'5-trimethoxy-4'hydroxystilbene] in biological fluids is necessary to study pharmacokinetics. A novel and simple high-performance liquid chromatographic method was developed for the determination of 3-methoxypterostilbene in rat serum and urine. The internal standard, pinosylvin, was added to 0.1 mL serum or urine (serum proteins were precipitated with cold acetonitrile at -20°C). Separation was achieved with a Phenomenex® C(18) (2) (5 µm, 250 × 4.60 mm) column with ultraviolet detection at 327 nm. The calibration curves in both matrices were linear ranging from 0.05 to 100 µg/mL, and the mean extraction efficiency was >99%. Precision of the assay for both matrices was <12% (RSD) and was within 13% for all points on the calibration curve. The limit of quantification for this method was 0.05 µg/mL. The assay was successfully applied to a preliminary study of 3-methoxypterostilbene pharmacokinetics in a rat.

Most school based initiatives are not implemented long-term and do not reach sustainability (McDermott, 2000; Mirel, 1994; Rice & Malen, 2003). Schools are implementing School-Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS) as an initiative to target social emotional development and behavior. Schools that have implemented SWPBS have experienced decreases in rate of Office Discipline Referrals (ODR), In-School Suspension (ISS) and Out-of-School Suspension (OSS) (e.g. Bohanon et al., 2006; Childs et al., 2009; Lassen et al., 2006). Research has also shown that schools that implement with a higher degree of fidelity have better outcomes (Childs et al., 2009; Florida's Positive Behavior Support Project, 2009). However, it is not known what mediating factor(s) assist with schools with implementation of Tier 1 PBS at a higher degree of fidelity. This study examined action plans that schools developed during their initial training of Tier 1 PBS, to determine if the action plans are one of the p...

Abstract Schools are seeking additional ways to cultivate positive school climate and culture, address problematic behavior, and increase the social-emotional behavior competencies of students. Restorative Practices (RP) is a whole-school practice that emphasizes prevention and positive responses to challenging behavior that can be used across all settings and with all stakeholders. This article describes the foundation of RP and its implementation in schools, specifically focusing on an overview of Proactive Circles and its integration into Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS). Examples will be provided of how schools have implemented Circles for building classroom communities, teaching social skills, and problem solving and monitored for fidelity. Last, there will be a discussion regarding planning for implementing Circles as it fits within a PBIS framework.
