This study was carried out in order to compare the seroprevalence of visceral leishmaniasis in dogs from different areas of Kirikkale between 2006-2008 using the microculture method (MCM) which is a new method, and the indirect fluorescent antigen test (IFAT). All of the blood collected from total of 50 dogs was found to be negative by MCM. Only one male Beagle strain dog (3 years old) was found to be seropositive at 1/128 titers (2%) for anti-Leishmania infantum IgG antibodies by IFAT.

An Anatolian wild sheep (Ovis orientalis anatolica) from a wild ruminant farm near Kirikkale, Turkey, was necropsied. Parasitic nodules were situated beneath the pleura of the caudodorsal lobes of the lungs. First stage larvae of Cystocaulus ocreatus were detected both in bronchial fluid and in lung paraffin sections. Clinical and parasitological examinations of the other animals (4 dwarf goats and 3 wild sheep reared on the same farm) were also performed. First stage larvae of C. ocreatus, and eggs of Nematodirus spp. and Strongyloides spp. were observed in coproscopic examination. Anthelmintic treatment, Rabenzole® (rafoxanide and thiabendazole, Topkim), was administered to the animals infected by parasites. At the end of the treatment the combination of rafoxanide and thiabendazole was found to be markedly effective for the treatment of lungworm infection and no parasitic eggs were detected in the faeces of any of the treated animals.

Heartworm infection is one of the most important parasitic diseases in dogs. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of heartworm in dogs in Kirikkale. Blood samples of 172 dogs were collected. Microfilariae were detected in 10 (5.8%). dogs with the Knott technique. The anal and excretory pores stained with acid phosphates showed that the microfilariae belonged to Dirofilaria immitis. Microfilariae were found in dogs aged between 2-10 years, and especially in Siberian huskies, setters, pointers and crossbred sheepdogs. The serum samples of 142 dogs were analyzed using the commercial ELISA test kit for detection of anti-D. immitis antibody. The occult infection rate was found to be 27.46% in dogs. According to these results, Kirikkale region has a high risk for heartworm infection.

Ehrlichia canis, a rickettsial agent, causes canine monocytotropic ehrlichiosis (CME) in dogs characterized by fever, anorexia, weakness, and lymphadenopathy. In most cases, after the acute stage, the disease regresses to an asymptomatic form which may progress into a more severe chronic and often fatal form. Once transmitted by Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks, it reaches the spleen, liver, lymph nodes via blood and lymph vessels. In the present study, dogs of different breeds and ages submitted to our clinics for various health problems, many of them with tick infestations, were examined serologically for ehrlichiosis. Blood samples were collected from a total of 122 dogs (66 females and 56 males) and analyzed using a commercial immunofluorescence antibody test kit. Total blood count was conducted using an automated cell counter. Seropositivity was detected in 18 dogs (14.75%), among which 17 had no clinical findings while one had a non-specific cough. The seropositive dogs had no s...

Hematolojik muayenede butun parametrelerin referans degerler arasinda oldugu tespit edildi.

Molecular characterizations of Cryptosporidium spp. in ruminants reared under traditional animal management systems are scarce and studies conducted thus far have revealed largely an absence of the pathogenic and zoonotic species C. parvum in pre-weaned animals. In this study, we examined Cryptosporidium species and subtype distribution in free-range pre-weaned dairy calves and goat kids with diarrhea. Cryptosporidium-positive specimens from pre-weaned calves on 10 farms and goat kids on 4 farms in Ankara, Balikesir, Corum, Kirikkale, and Kirsehir Provinces, Turkey were genotyped by PCR-restriction length polymorphism analysis of the small subunit rRNA gene, which identified C. parvum in 27 calves and 9 goat kids and C. ryanae in 1 calf. Among the C. parvum isolates successfully subtyped by DNA sequence analysis of the 60 kDa glycoprotein gene, three subtypes were detected in calves, including IIaA13G2R1 (20/23), IIdA18G1 (2/23), and IIdA20G1b (1/23), and four subtypes were detected...

Neospora caninum is a protozoal agent causing abortion and infertility problems in dairy cattle. The objective of the present study was to detect the seroprevalence of N.caninum in dogs and its co-existence with Toxoplasma gondii in some rural and urban regions of Kirikka-le province. A total of 121 blood samples were examined with indirect immunoflorescent antibody test to detect the presence of N.caninum IgG antibodies. The seropositivity of N.caninum was 28.9% in dogs. The seropositivity rate was higher in male dogs than that of females (p < 0.05). The seropositivity rate of N.caninum was 36.5% and 20.7% for pure breed and mongrel dogs, respectively (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference amongst the age groups and location of the dogs (rural or urban) (p > 0.05). The N.caninum positive serum samples were also examined for the presence of antibodies for T.gondii by Sabin-Feldman Dye test in order to identify the possible serological co-infection, 1/16 and higher ...
