The online catalogue provides new features and capabilities, such as enhanced content, sophisticated structure and more powerful search/retrieval/display facilities, which demand a new look at current cataloguing paradigms. In this summary of his doctoral research the author re-assesses current cataloguing principles in the light of online features and capabilities. Through a historical and an analytical study he finds that, while most of the basic cataloguing principles do not clash with the online environment, there is a need for additional principles to secure more effective searching, retrieval and display of bibliographic information. He concludes that basic cataloguing concepts relate to the nature of bibliographic entities rather than being dependent on the technology of catalogue construction. This research aimed to study the status of communication skills of librarians and effective factors in this field. A questionnaire was used in this survey for collecting data. Research population consisted of the librarians at the libraries of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. Findings showed that the most important factors in interpersonal communication from the librarians' points of views are firstly organizational and then environmental, personal and cultural factors. Also, there is no significant relationship between variables like "education" and "experience" with communication skills of librarians. Furthermore, findings show that the status of librarians' communication skills in all areas of study at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad is the same and there is no significant difference among them. At the end, some recommendations are mentioned for extension of interpersonal communication skills of librarians.

Purpose: One of the most effective ways to improve relevance performance in IR systems including Web search engines is to provide their users with tools facilitating query expansion. Search engines such as Google provide users with keyword suggest tools. The aim of this research was to investigate Users reactions regarding the efficacy of Google's suggested keywords/queries in query expansion based on "The Least effort Principle" and "Cognitive load Theory" from users‟ view Design/Methodology/Approach: Through a mixed method approach quantitative and qualitative data were collected from 60 postgraduate students at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran (Humanities & social Science Basic and engineering science) using four different instruments (questionnaire, thinking aloud technique, query logs, and interviews). Findings: Among others the „relation between suggested keywords and the information need‟ (mean rate of 3.53 out of four) was considered the most impo...

The present study was conducted to identify the users' emotion in various stages of information retrieval based on the information retrieval model in web. From the methodological perspective, the present study is experimental, and the type of study is practical. The society comprised all MA students majoring in different humanistic science branches and studying at Imam Reza international university. The sample society of this research consisted of 30 participants. The sample size was determined through stratified random sampling via G*power software. Data collection was carried out by using: demographic and prior experience of using internet questionnaire, post search questionnaire and recorded videos of users' faces. The findings of the study demonstrated that: 1) during the initial stages of searching, the frequency of emotion of apprehension, and in general during the link tracking stage, the negative emotions with the overall 49/3 percent are more frequent than the other...

This article is a short report of a research project carried out, upon the recommendation of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, by the Department of Librarianship and Information Science of Meshed Ferdowsi University between 2003-2004. The goal was to study and revise the current curriculum to bring it closer to the changing needs of the present society. The curricula of the U.S.A., England, Australia, India and Iran were reviewed and compared with the objective of introducing a new syllabus for the two fields of Information Management and IT Management. The new curriculum was sent to some experts and faculty members of the departments of Librarianship and Information Science of Iran that ran courses at M. A. level. They were asked to issue their comments on the curriculum. Then, the final version of the curriculum was verified after undergoing some revisions by the Revising Committee of Meshed Ferdowsi University. The new curriculum was also sent to the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology to be sent to universities after being approved by the Ministry.

With the ever‐increasing developments in information technology and networks, end users of the online environment now have integrated access to a variety of bibliographic databases, mainly library catalogues and A&I services, from a single terminal. While such a facility influences users’ expectations and preferences in the searching, retrieval and presentation of bibliographic information, it raises an important question as to whether different bibliographic practices can use a similar or compatible set of principles for creating bibliographic records and files. This paper is an attempt to identify areas of possible reconciliation and also address some of the implications of such an issue.

Similar to information and knowledge, data and especially big data are now known as one of the most vital elements in the 21st century since they provide multiple capabilities to individuals and organizations. However, in comparison to some theories about information and knowledge, there are no significant attempts in most scientific disciplines for building theories about data. This paper first reviews the different definitions provided about the concept of data in the works of scholars. It then identifies and explores the philosophical aspects as well as the multiple capabilities/features that can be derived from data. Finally, a starter list of some basic/general theories is developed based on the capabilities and features of data. Such new theories can be used as meta-theories to extend data theories for various scientific disciplines. The important notion supporting the development of theories about data is that, if data is so important and if data science is to continue flouri...
