Barrett's esophagus (BE), a complication of gastroesophageal reflux disease, is associated with an increased risk of esophageal cancer. Mitogen-activated protein kinases may play an important role in the pathogenesis of this process. We aimed to evaluate mitogen-activated protein kinases activity in esophageal mucosa of patients with BE and find possible relationship between reflux type and BE. Twenty-four patients (mean age: 59 years) with gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms and endoscopically suspected esophageal metaplasia (ESEM) were prospectively enrolled for testing by a multichannel intraluminal impedance monitoring along with a Bilitec 2000. Endoscopic biopsies were taken from methylene blue-positive pit patterns (sites suggesting specialized intestinal metaplasia [SIM]), from 2 cm above the Z-line and from cardial parts of the stomach. The biopsies were analyzed for extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), p38 activity by Western ...

The discrepancy between what the general public and specialist in allergic diseases regard as a true food allergy can in part depend on the frequent evidence of subjects in whom clinical symptoms elicited by a given food allergen are frequently not reproducible: this suggests the existence of allergens variably present in certain foods. In adults and older children common is a form of food allergy associated with inhaled allergens, especially pollens. In this allergic form pollens and various vegetal food often cross react but the underlying scientific rationale is largely unclear. From the study of the "latex-fruits allergic syndrome" and the "oral allergic syndrome" emerged that the cross reactivity depends on epitopes of pollens and vegetables belonging to one of the 14 classes of the "pathogenesis related proteins" (PRPs). Vegetables produce PRPs in response to infection or after plant injury or application of chemicals: long-term conservation and m...

Among 264 children suspected of GERD, acid gastroesophageal reflux (GER) was confirmed in 138 children on the basis of 24-hour pH monitoring. Comparative analysis of parameters of 24-hour intraesophageal pH monitoring (in distal channel--above cardia) in children with acid GER: primary and secondary to cow milk allergy and/or other food allergy (CMA/FA) diagnosed; comparison of examined values of pH monitoring parameters with regard to duration of the disease (preliminary study and prospective studies--after 1, 2, 4 and 9 years of clinical observation and/or conservative treatment). 264 children suspected of GERD, of both sexes (140 boys--53.0% and 124 girls--47.0%), aged: 1.5-102 months; x = 20.78 +/- 17.23 months, were enrolled in the study. In order to differentiate acid GER: primary from secondary to CMA/FA in 138 (52.3%) children with GERD immunoallergological tests were performed. Positive result of oral food challenge test confirmed the allergy being the cause of GER. 138 chi...

Dietary calcium deficiency may increase fracture risk. In girls, 29.4% of fracture cases and 11.8% of controls without fracture had a history of milk-free diet. The odds ratio (OR) for fracture with a milk-free diet in girls was 4.6, p < 0.01. In boys, 23% of cases and 19% of controls had a history of a milk-free diet; OR = 1.3, NS). A milk-free diet due to cow's milk allergy is associated with increased fracture risk in girls. An intake of calcium below the reference daily intake (RDI) of 800-1200 mg/day during growth is thought to increase fracture risk even though convincing evidence for this view is scarce. The paucity of evidence may be partly due to many trial participants being calcium replete. Children and adolescents with cow's milk allergy (CMA) avoid milk and have a calcium intake below the RDI. The aim of this study was to examine the association between consumption of a milk-free diet and fracture risk. In this case-control study conducted in Poland, 57 boys ...

Pollen-related food allergy to fresh fruits and vegetables is a well-known clinical phenomenon. Bet v 1, the major birch pollen allergen, has been cloned and shows homologies to various food allergens (e.g. hazelnut, apple, celery, tomato). Allergy to profilin Bet v 2 was also described in 10-15% of patients sensitized to birch pollen. Objective of our work was to assess the diagnostic value of recombinant allergens (rBet v 1, rBet v 2) for diagnosis of children sensitized to birch pollen with associated food allergy. The investigations were carried out on the group of 14 children aged 4-17 years, with a history of allergic reactions and sensitized to birch pollen with associated food allergy. Skin prick tests were performed with natural foods and commercial aeroallergens (Bencard). Sera-specific IgE antibodies to recombinant and other allergens (Pharmacia Upjohn) were measured with a fluoroimmunoenzymatic essay (UniCAP). Oral food challenge tests were performed to confirm adverse f...

In this work we report simulations of the melting temperature of silicon at zero pressure employing a series of models, which include an empirical potential and three tight binding models. We have determined the melting temperature for each model by evaluating the free energies of the solid and liquid phases as a function of temperature, finding the temperature at which

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is one of the most common genetic diseases worldwide. It is caused by mutations of the gene situated on the long-arm of the 7th chromosome coding Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTCR) which is responsible for the synthesis of cAMP-dependent membrane chloride channel located on the top surface of epithelial cells of exocrine glands. Accumulation of the secretion in the outlet ducts caused by a dysfunction or lack of CFTR proteins leads to abnormal activity of exocrine glands, especially in the respiratory and alimentary tracts. Carbohydrates, the main dietary component, supply energy to the body, but at the same time are the major cariogenic agent. The aim of the current study was to assess dental caries disease and oral hygiene in CF patients in the region of Podlasie. The study involved 23 patients with cystic fibrosis, aged 2.5-24 years, from the Podlasie Province treated in the Outpatient Cystic Fibrosis Department of the Children's ...

Some recent studies indicate that unsaturated fatty acids, components of cellular membranes and precursors of immunomodulators, play a significant role in the pathogenesis of some symptoms of atopic dermatitis. Since they cannot be synthesized by the human body, they must be provided with nutrition as the so called exogenous fatty acids: linoleic (a precursor of arachidonic acid) and α-linolenic acid (a precursor of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)). Their deficiency facilitates the development of some disorders, e.g. of the cardiovascular system or of the nervous system, or becomes the cause of intensification of ailments in their course e.g. pruritus and dryness in atopic dermatitis. Though clinical examinations to date confirm the efficacy of fatty acid supplementation in treatment of atopic dermatitis, their results are not explicit.

A total of 106 patients, included in the study, were divided into three groups with regard to Helicobacter pylori infection. Endoscopy and histopathological examination of the stomach, based on the Sydney's System, were performed in all the children. CD45RA and CD45RO cells were identified by means of specific antibodies in the inflammatory infiltrate of the antral mucosa. An increased expression of CD45RO and CD45RA lymphocytes was reported, basing on the results of the study.

The studies aimed at evaluating mast cells in inflammatory infiltration of gastric mucosa in children with H. pylori infection, as well as in those after the infection eradication. Biopsy specimens of gastric mucosa were evaluated, the specimens collected from 59 H. pylori-positive patients (Group I), 29 patients after H. pylori infection (Group II) and 18 H. pylori-negative children (Group III). The specimens were assessed for infection and inflammation and stained with anti-human mast cell tryptase to count mucosal mast cells. The evaluations of histopathological changes in the antrum mucosa of the children were performed, according to Sydney's Classification. In morphometric evaluation, slight differences were found in the numbers of mast cells among Groups: I, II and III of the examined children (the number of mastocytes being: 86.4, 81.4 and 70.2 cells/mm2 of specimen, respectively).

So far the treatment of chronic hepatitis B has been based on the use of numerous agents, particularly interferon alpha which proved the most effective. Attempts are made to introduce new therapeutic methods (antiviral agents--nucleoside analogues, immunotherapy--anti HBV vaccine, gene therapy) in order to obtain higher percentage of patients with durable inhibition of HBV replication than it is observed after treatment with interferon alpha. The current work has been devoted to the presentation of the experiences with interferon alpha, lamivudine and anti HBV vaccine used in subjects with chronic type B hepatitis, with special reference to paediatric patients.

Prevention of hepatitis B infection is an important factor in the successful management of cancer and aplastic anaemia cases. Our result suggested that children with Hodgkin's disease and solid tumors vaccinated during early stage of immunosuppressive therapy are good responders to hepatitis B vaccine. Active immunisation with hepatitis B vaccine (Engerix B), was also effective in children with leukaemia after completing immunosuppressive therapy. Protective levels of antibodies remained 6 years after vaccination. Vaccination according to shortened schedule (0-10-20 days) was not effective in these children. Passive immunisation is indicated in children with chronic neoplastic haematological diseases during immunosuppressive therapy. In 6 children the lack of seroconversion after vaccination was due to immune disorders.

The aim of the study was to assess the effect of food, respiratory and contact allergens, infections, vaccinations, stress and other factors that exacerbate skin symptoms in 50 children diagnosed with food allergy. Individual daily cards of observation were used in the analysis. The dominant factors were found to be food allergens (72%, 36 persons) an elimination diet is thus appears to be the main canon of therapy of atopic dermatitis in children.

We describe an implementation of density functional theory that is formulated fully in configuration space, where all wave functions, densities, and potentials are represented on a grid. Central to the method is a fourth-order factorization of the evolution operator for the Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian. Special attention is paid to nonlocal pseudopotentials of the Kleinman-Bylander type, which are necessary for a quantitatively

ABSTRACT Elastic and dielectric properties of glaserite K3Na(SO4)2 single crystal were examined using the method of composite oscillators, Brillouin light scattering methods and dielectric spectroscopy. Measurements were performed in the temperature range from 18 K to 300 K. Anomalies in the temperature dependencies of Brillouin shift and dielectric permittivity at about 70 K confirmed the earlier predicted phase transition at 75 ± 25 K. Temperature dependences of the resonance frequency of the vibrating composite oscillator, Brillouin shift measured in the [110] direction, components of dielectric permittivity tensor reveal an anomaly at about 50 K. Moreover, thermal hysteresis of the dielectric permittivity suggested the presence of an incommensurate state between T1 = 50 K and T2 = 70 K. (© 2006 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

In this short review we attempt to establish and/or strengthen connections between probiotics administration and apoptotic pathway in gastrointestinal tract. The disturbance of apoptosis is mainly deliberated in the framework of insufficient removal of immuno-effector cells that may cause autoimmunity. In the context of the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), the commensal bacteria and their products effect on gut and immune cell survival are illustrated. The multitude of mechanisms of probiotics to induce cell death is shortly summarized and some aspects of it are being discussed in greater detail. The mechanism of intestinal cell death induced by probiotic administration and its influence on the immune system and potential benefits of apoptosis induction during probiotic therapy is indicated.
