In a previous work [Ana M. B. de Manrique and María I. Massone, submitted to J. Acoust. Soc. Am. (19791] a vowel effect on the identification of voiceless Spanish fricatives [f, s, ∫] in transitionless syllables was observed. The present experiment was conducted to determine whether the lexical-semantic value of words neutralized the vowel effect just described. The test material consisted of two sets of six words each recorded by a male Spanish-speaker. The initial syllables which were one of the following: [so, su, fi, fe, ∫o, ∫u;], were gated out and replaced by the transitionless syllables previously mentioned by tape-splicing technique. Words in the first set allowed two alternatives: e.g. “suma” [suma] ‘he sums’/ “fuma” [fuma] ‘he smokes,’ words in the second set allowed no choice: e.g., “lluvia” [∫uβia] ‘rain.’ The results showed that the vowel effect is apparent when the phonetic percept evoked by this effect follows a lexical possibility, while it disappears when the phonetic percept competes with word identification. These data gives evidence of the level interaction in the speech perception process.

This paper examines the acoustic properties of Argentine Spanish fricatives and the spectral cues in recognition of these consonants. It was observed that [s] spectrally peaks around 5000 and 8000 Hx, [formula: see text] around 2500 and 5000 Hz, [f] around 1500 and 8500 Hz, [x] around 1000 and 4000 Hz and [ç] around 2000 and 4000 Hz. The perceptual importance of each of these spectral peaks was determined by filtering and synthesis experiments. With regard to the voice fricatives: [beta, ŏ, Y, Y, 3] the analysis showed periodic components with an F1 of similar frequency and a variable F2. Noise components with an F1 of similar frequency and a variable F2. Noise components were principally observed in [3]. Voiced fricatives proved to be shorter than voiceless ones. The analysis of fricatives in consonant-vowel syllables suggested that both the friction and vocalic portions may provide relevant acoustic cues. Tape-splicing experiments, designed to test this observation, showed that except for [x] and [Y], all Spanish fricatives were accurately identified by the friction portion alone. However, it was also observed that in transitionless syllables the vocalic portion affected the phonetic identification of the friction portion. This phenomenon pointed to the perceptual relevance of the transition in some combinations of fricatives and vowels.

In the present work, we attempt to describe F0 movements and the amount of F0 change in the stressed syllables of Spanish sentences as a function of phonetic and linguistic effects. The material consisted of a list of 92 sentences with different syntactic structures which were recorded twice by a male speaker. Wideband spectrograms and F0 contours of all the sentences were obtained. F0 movements on the syllabic nucleus of each accented syllable were chosen as the parameters for the analysis of F0 contours. Results showed that the accented syllabic nucleus presents the following F0 movements: rise, fall, level, and rise‐fall. These movements are correlated with effects such as the nature of the preceding consonant (level with voiceless, rise with voiced), position of the accented word (fall in the last accented word, rise in yes‐no questions), and boundary (rise‐fall or fall). Emphatic stress is correlated with increased F0 and larger F0 excursions. The amount of F0 change seems to follow a declination lin...

In a previous work [A.M. B. de Manrique and M. I. Massone, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 69, 145 (1981)] a vowel effect on the phonetic identification of Spanish fricatives /f, s, ∫/ was observed. It was assumed that the effect might be due to the absence of transitions or to the absence of forward coarticulation influences in the friction portions of the syllables used as stimuli. The present experiment was undertaken to evaluate the latter hypothesis. The stimuli were formed by gating out the fricative portions of the natural syllables /fi, fa, fu, si, sa, su, ∫i, ∫a, ∫u/ and combining these portions in CV syllables with the steady‐state natural vowels /i, a, u/ by tape‐splicing technique. Six listeners were asked to identify the fricative. Results show that the vowel effect completely disappears. This suggests the perceptual relevance of the spectral variations in the fricative portion, due to vowel context, for the identification of the fricative.

An examination of the semiotic aspects of a language involves asking questions such as: What is a text? What are the characteristics of an interview? What semiotic value does television have, especially when we analyze an interview with a Deaf signer? Although all of these questions deserve our attention, we explain each concept briefly in this chapter. 1 We intend to clarify some of the functions of these different aspects in order to understand their interrelationships in the corpus analyzed. First, it is important to explain that all the communicative interactions among Deaf people in Argentina are conversational. Sign languages have an oral tradition, that is to say, they are transmitted from generation to generation in face-to-face communication. Several types of linguistic contact situations exist among Deaf people or among Deaf and hearing people (Massone and Menendez 1997). Such interactions constitute oral exchanges as a series of events whose whole conforms to a text that ...

The relationship between stress and F0 as manifested by the F0 curve in declarative and interrogative Spanish sentences is quantified. The material under study were the F0 curves of 20 declarative sentences and four yes‐no questions. The peaks and changes of F0 of stressed syllables were measured on the F0 curves and the duration of each segment on spectrograms. Three levels of stress were determined on several key content words. In declarative sentences the high level is manifested by the F0 maximum: 138.42 Hz, and by the greatest F0 change with respect to the preceding syllable: 30.42 Hz. The middle level presents the second F0 peak: 124.5 Hz and a smaller change: 26.5 Hz. The low level is marked by a greater vowel and consonant duration. The yes‐no questions show a greater F0 change and a higher overall frequency of the F0 curve with respect to statements. Therefore, the pattern of interrogative sentences cue distinguishes a question from a statement. Results suggest that stress is marked by different cues according to the level of stress of the content words and to its position within the F0 curve.
