Abstract The economy of any nation depends upon small-medium enterprises (SMEs), which are the la... more Abstract The economy of any nation depends upon small-medium enterprises (SMEs), which are the largest contributor to the manufacturing business. Unfortunately, most of the SMEs are running sick because of operational inefficiencies, poor management, unskilled labor, over inventory, high rejection rate, or impaired machine parts. Value Stream Mapping (VSM) as one of the tools of lean manufacturing is accepted by most of the industries to remove non-value-added activities. This paper is a case study of an XXX Ferrites core manufacturing industry facing a problem of rejection of about 9% daily in the domain of large size ferrite cores. Selection of high rejection rate of large size Product No. UU9330 soft ferrite core emerged as a focus for the study. The researchers drew the current state map with detailed information, and the map was studied thoroughly for observing the causes of rejection. We drew the future state map after incorporating the learnings from the prevailing scenario and lean methodology. VSM implementation revealed a decrease in the rejection rate from 9% to 2%. The net gain observed in synchronization ratio and delivery performance was 7% and 25% respectively. The lead time also reduced from 10 days to 9 days after the successful lean implementation.

Not disregarding the fact that, first of all, protection of human life is a matter of human rights issue, selected data are given related to occupational accidents and diseases on both macro and enterprise levels. The research stresses the importance of implementing health and safety interventions at workplace. These interventions have impact not only on enterprise level but also on individual and social levels. The report points out that interventions support company goals and performance and thus health and safety interventions at workplace can be considered as a key to business excellence. The other important concepts studied in this study are well being, workplace development and work organisation. A new model is introduced by this report integrating productivity and well-being into one concept: workplace development. The model shows that work organisation has a significant impact on the relationship between health and safety at work and productivity. The model is based on integrating work organisation and health and safety programmes. Occupational safety and health programmes together with the other organizational projects contribute to the workplace development.

A Reynolds equation and finite difference method are used to calculate the pressures of short, infinite, and finite slider bearings. The partial sinusoidal grooves are placed on different locations of slider bearings. The effect of change in speed and viscosity is also investigated in this work. It is observed that partial short grooved bearing shows maximum increment in pressure as compared with infinite and finite bearing. In the case of isothermal analysis the influence of speed and viscosity in percentage is negligible.

If by recycling the used flux can be reused in product yielding same quality parameter as the new flux, then the cost of the input will go down significantly. I undertook the task of writing my own book for the Manufacturing Technology course What students... more I undertook the task of writing my own book for the Manufacturing Technology course What students and faculty will find in my book are short, precise explanations of terms and concepts that are written in understandable language. Detailed Examples Keyed to Exercises, My experience as a teacher has taught me two things about examples: they need to be detailed, and they need to help students do their homework. As a result, users of my book will find abundant examples with every step carefully laid out and explained where necessary so that students can follow easily. Students will also be able to read them on their own later when they’re ready to do the exercise sets. I have also included a double cross-referencing system between my examples and exercise sets so that no matter which one students start with, they’ll see the connection to the other. If students work an exercise and find they are stumped on how to finish it, they’ll see that for that group of exercises they’re directed to a specific example to follow as a model. Either way, students will find my book’s examples give them the guidance they need to succeed in the course. Varied Exercises and Applications A third goal of mine in writing this book was to give students more variety in the kinds of exercises they perform than I found in other books. Students won’t find an intimidating page of endless drills in my book, but instead will see exercises in manageable groups with specific goals. They will also be able to augment their proficiency using different formats (true/false, written response, multiple choice) and different methods (discussion, collaboration, calculators). Not only is there an abundance of skill-building exercises, I have also researched a wide variety of realistic applications using real data so that those “dreaded word problems” will be seen as a useful and practical extension of what students have learned. Finally, every chapter ends with critical thinking exercises that go beyond numerical computation and call on students to employ their intuitive problem-solving skills to find the answers to mathematical puzzles in fun and innovative ways. With all of these resources to choose from, I am sure that faculties will be comfortable adapting my book to fit their course, and that students will appreciate having a text written for their level and to stimulate their interest.

Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is a well-established machining option for manufacturing geo... more Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is a well-established machining option for manufacturing geometrically complex or hard material parts that are extremely difficult-to-machine by conventional machining processes. In recent years, EDM researchers have explored a number of ways to improve the sparking efficiency including some unique experimental concepts that depart from the EDM traditional sparking phenomenon. Despite a range of different approaches, this new research shares the same objectives of achieving more efficient metal removal coupled with a reduction in tool wear and improved surface quality. This paper reviews and based on review findings the research work carried out to improve performance measures, optimizing the process variables, monitoring and control the sparking process, simplifying the electrode design and manufacture. From the experiment, it has been witnessed that current was the most significant parameter followed by pulse on time and the least significant was the pulse off time for the Material removal rate and tool wear rate.

This paper presents a structure for the implementation of some of the Lean Manufacturing (LM) too... more This paper presents a structure for the implementation of some of the Lean Manufacturing (LM) tools and techniques. The structure employs analytical approach taking the company through various iterative implementation phases of robustness of operation, responsiveness to customers and proactive growth tactics. The framework incorporates a detailed assessment of the level of business environment turbulence and the impact of this turbulence on the enterprise. The results of this assessment are used to identify and customize an implantation plan as well as select the required tools and those measures of performance necessary to monitor the plans progress. This is being carried out at Jamshedpur India while aligning actions with the company‟s long term vision, mission and corporate strategy. The study revealed a lot of avenues for the improvement of the company. Viewing the situation from an operations management perspective, this paper presents a logical and well-structured framework and clear justification for implementing the LM to improve the product quality and productivity of the organization as a whole by which an organization can transform into a world-class enterprise.
