Forest management is an untapped tool, yet to realize its full potential to fight against climate change. The capability of forests to act as carbon sinks makes them a key resource to reduce CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. However, carbon which has been fixed can be suddenly emitted again as a consequence of disturbances such as pests or wildfires. Mediterranean plant phenology, climatic conditions, and the accumulation of fuel biomass due to abandonment of traditional forest uses generate a scenario prone to large wildfires and consequently large greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions. The abandonment could be offset by considering the economic value of forest ecosystem services, principally carbon fixation. Nevertheless, currently existing forest carbon markets consider only anthropogenic fixation based on a business as usual scenario without disturbances that cannot be applied to Mediterranean forest reality. Thus, a methodology to monetize carbon fixed has been developed and appl...

The technology of soil characterisation or thermal response test is a method to evaluate the key parameters of the ground for the design of geothermal systems, such as the ground conductivity, the thermal resistivity of the borehole and other thermal conditions of the undisturbed ground. Both the collection data during the test and its subsequent interpretation are of paramount importance to avoid erroneous or uncertain results. At the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) there is an equipped geothermal borehole conceived as a test site to be able to design, assess, analyse and implement any interesting measure to allow a better understanding of the processes underlying TRT activity. The test site includes the monitoring of all involved variables and allows a fine-tuned control of heat injection into the soil. This paper describes the development of this experimental facility. The implementation of this technology will allow a more correct analysis of the obtained information wi...

The design and validation of simulation models are common tasks for many researchers. Frequently, the simulation execution is the phase where more time the researchers spent. In order to improve the response time of simulation execution, a network of workstations (NOW) is commonly used. Although these systems have proved their usefulness, they do not include mechanisms to easily and transparently distribute the application code to hosts. In this paper, a distributed multi agent framework for concurrent simulations executions is presented. This framework is MADEX (Mobile Agent for Distributed Execution), which facilitates a) the dynamic management of computing resources, b) the application of various methods for code distribution and c) the design of fault tolerant mechanisms. MADEX has been developed in Java, which allows using heterogeneous hosts. The framework has been implemented on top of Grasshopper agent system. Although the framework overhead, the tests show that it is not me...

The way patients are treated in Hospital Emergency Departments changes during the year, depending on many factors. One key component is weather temperature. Some seasonal maladies are tightly related to temperature, such as flu in cold weather or sunburn in hot weather. In this study, data from a hospital in Valencia was used to explore how harsh weather changes affect the emergency department, obtaining information about probable impacts of global warming effects in healthcare systems. Process mining techniques helped in the discovery of changes in the Emergency Departments. Some illnesses, such as heat stroke, are more prevalent during heatwaves, but more interestingly, the time to attend patients is also higher. Rapid changes in temperature are also analyzed through Process Mining techniques.

In this work the Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) for the classification of ways of walking patterns is presented. The Differential Evolution (DE) Algorithm as an optimization technique was used for weights and delays settings. Two accelerometers, each one with three axes, were used to obtain simultaneous information on both legs. The information formed by nine features has been stored in a database: the first three correspond to the accelerations of x, y and z axis, next three correspond to the velocities which are obtained by doing an integration of the acceleration data for each axis and finally the positions x, y and z are calculated by the integration of velocities respectively.

The evolution of technology allows to people with special capabilities of mobility to perform the activities faster and easier. The intelligent environments combined with optimization algorithms and middleware agents could help to this aim. This paper presents the design and the implementation of an architecture of a middleware agent that allows us to make the communication between heterogeneous devices (sensors and actuators of different communication protocols from WiFi to ZigBee). On the other hand, we present a comparison study between micro-algorithms used to get lighting comfort in order to perform an activity in a confined space; this is affect by the light from the outside, which can be blocked by shutters and doors, and lighting of lamps obtained within this space. The micro-algorithm evaluated were: Genetic Algorithm (GA), Artificial Immune System (AIS), Estimation Distribution Algorithm (EDA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Bee Algorithm (BA) and Bee Swarm Optimization (BSO).

This is because, in general, lecturers use the same textbooks and are inspired by common curriculum sources. However, lab courses and project assignments require more and more expensive resources (computers, assemblers or assembler simulators, logic circuit simulators, ...) This fact, together with the

Mission critical systems are computer-based control systems that people depend on, often for their livelihoods, sometimes for their lives. As the integration scale of VLSI increases, computer-based systems are more prone to be affected by Single Event Upsets (SEUs). FPGAs have proven to be very useful devices for the injection of SEUs in order to assess the dependability of those systems. The conventional approach for injecting SEUs following the Run-Time Reconfiguration methodology involves reconfiguration times dependent on the complexity of the model. In case of complex models, it will greatly increase the execution time of fault injection experiments. This paper presents a new approach for the injection of SEUs into the memory elements of the system under test by means of FPGAs. This approach takes benefit of the FPGA architecture to minimise the reconfiguration time for SEU injection, obtaining an speed-up of near two orders of magnitude.
