In this work, 27 international authors pay tribute to Bernard Sellato. Over the decades, he has ethnographically studied around forty societies, established the phonology of their languages, examined the transition to agriculture and the sedentarization of forest nomads, shed light on the myths, rituals, and cosmogonies of the people of the large island, their history and prehistory, discussed the interface between tropical forest and societies, and documented the art, craftsmanship, basketry, trade in forest products, and processes of ethnocultural diffusion. His work encompasses both social anthropology and regional ethnology.

This article is devoted to the traditional panel painting of the Dayak Ngaju people of South Borneo, with a focus on paintings depicting boats of the dead. The occasion is provided by the temporary exhibition "Schiffe und Übergänge. Alfred Steinmanns Forschung zum Schiffsmotiv in Indonesien" organised by the Völkerkundemuseum der Universität Zürich and documented in this catalogue. Among the works selected for the exhibition project is in fact a large panel painted on two sides depicting mythological boats of the dead, a genre that the Dayak Ngaju employed in the context of traditional funeral ceremonies known as 'second burial' (tiwah). This work, preserved in the Bernishsches Historisches Museum (inv. E/1932.253. 0281), aroused the keen interest of the ethnologist Alfred Steinmann (1892-1974), who integrated it into his research on the mythological boats of the Indonesian archipelago, which resulted in publications such as "Das Kultische Schiff in Indonesien (1939)", "Eine Geisterschiffmalerei aus Südborneo (1942)" and "Das Schiff in der darstellenden Kunst Südostasiens (1945)".

In this contribution we propose to analyze the circumstances of healing through the use of possession among the Katingan in the wider context of traditional Ngaju medicine, concentrating especially on some key ideological concepts and specific aspects of Ngaju medical practice. As indicated by the scant published literature on the subject, this is a little-known area of research. Among those who have devoted some attention to the subject are Johannes Salilah and Arnoud H. Klokke (1998), Sian Jay (1989), Hans Schärer (1946, 1938), Carl Lumholtz (1920), August Hardeland (1859), and Carl Schwaner (1853-1854).

The first written record of Javanese puppet theatre dates back to the time of the Majapahit Empire. It is an inscription from the Javanese village of Kuti, dated 840, which speaks of a court celebration in which a theatrical performance by 'palace wage-earners' (sang mangilala drbya haji) also takes place. More precisely, the inscription informs us that the play is performed in the context of a religious ceremony in which dances, plays and a puppet show are held. With reference to puppets, the inscription mentions a haringgit, i.e. the staging of ringgit 'flat puppets'. The latter term in ancient Javanese designates puppets.

The large 'sapuyung daré' ceremonial hats of the Ngaju people of southern Borneo are characterised by the presence of figurative representations decorating their outer surface. The representations on the hat constitute a uniquely refined decoration destined for liturgical weaving. One of the works carried out during the field research concerned their documentation, in order to have an 'iconographic spectrum' and to know their geographical and historical spread. The paraphrase "Decorative motifs" in this contribution summaries the results of this work.

The sapuyung daré is the result of the transformation of a profane object into a sacred one: liturgy and weaving have met in the broad woven and decorated hat that gives spiritual protection to the person. The contexts of use of the sapuyung daré and its functions are presented below. First, two rituals recurring in different ceremonies are described, the semenget and the potong pantan; then the two ceremonies related to the cycle of life are presented, the nahunan for birth and the tiwah for death, which in Ngaju conceptions has rather the value of rebirth, as it is considered a continuation of life in another form. From the ceremony of introduction to life, aimed at giving protection to the newborn, to that of the closing of existence on earth, intended to send the soul of the deceased to the ancestral community, the sapuyung daré is present at all the most important moments in the life of the Ngaju.

The stylistic features of the Brignoni Collection's pantak are not so marked as to permit us to attribute them with certainty to one specific ethnic group among the "Land Dayak". For its analysis, we shall make use of ethnographic information gathered among the Kanayatn, which will enable us to trace the function, significance, and cultural context of a work about which we still have precious little scientific knowledge.

This abstract focuses on the significant inclusion of Junita Arneld's photograph in the exhibition catalogue of "Capolavori en plein air. Scultura italiana del novecento. Opere della Collezione Loi", taking place from 7th June 2023 to 29th October 2023 at Golf Club Lugano, Switzerland.
The exhibition, organized by MUSEC Lugano, forms part of the centennial celebrations of Golf Club Lugano, constructed in 1923 by Erwin von Riedermann as a testament of love for his wife, Josefa, an avid golfer. Set against the backdrop of a splendid pre-alpine landscape, the eighteen-hole course meanders along the Magliasina River, amid a flat terrain adorned with birch trees, oaks, pines, beeches, rhododendrons, oleanders, and azaleas.

As part of the centennial program, Golf Club Lugano collaborated with MUSEC to create an exhibition of sculptures by renowned Italian masters of the 20th century, including Francesco Messina, Luciano Minguzzi, and Giacomo Manzù. Titled CAPOLAVORI EN PLEIN AIR. La scultura italiana del Novecento. Opere della Collezione Loi, the exhibition showcases nine sculptures of exceptional intensity and artistic quality, strategically placed along the golf course to transform it into a surprising and unique artistic trail. Primarily crafted in bronze, these sculptures, sourced from the Nicola Loi collection and selected by MUSEC, represent both the technical excellence of sculptural practice and a diverse range of emotions that characterized the explorations of 20th-century masters. Their placement amidst the natural landscape seeks a harmonious fusion with the surrounding scenery. Each artwork is accompanied by a brief critical description and a poetic passage inspired by the piece itself, penned by renowned Italian literary figures of the 20th century. The outdoor exhibition is complemented by a publication by the Fondazione culture e musei Lugano.

The selection of Pokpong's women's faces as the centerpiece of the exhibition underscores the exceptional artistic achievement and research process of the renowned Thai artist.

Initially known for his exploration of natural and urban landscapes of Thailand and Bangkok, Attasit Pokpong has since shifted his focus towards the female form, elevating it to an absolute symbol of emotion and a powerful mode of communication. This abstract highlights the significant contribution of Junita Arneld's photograph in the exhibition catalogue of the collection of Vittorio Volpi. The catalogue focuses on the seigan (tabernacle), a devotional object that emerged in Japan during the period known as the 'Christian century' between the mid-16th century and the 1720s. Dating back to the years between 1580 and 1620, the tabernacle, housing an oil painting of a Madonna in Glory, is currently preserved in Vittorio Volpi's Lugano collection. Vittorio Volpi, an entrepreneur, economist, journalist, and writer, spent over three decades working in Tokyo as the head of major international banks, which fostered a deep passion for Japanese art and culture, making it his second home.

The seigan presented in the exhibition catalogue is an exceptional example of hybrid art, combining typically Japanese techniques, materials, and subjects influenced by Western aesthetics. It reflects the encounters and clashes that characterized the global landscape at the end of the 16th century.

The catalogue, titled SEIGAN. This abstract highlights the inclusion of Junita Arneld's photograph in the exhibition catalogue of the Wirz Collection, held at Villa Malpensata Lugano Switzerland from March 17, 2022, to October 2, 2022.
The exhibition features a diverse collection of artworks centered around New Guinean children, showcasing 79 drawings created between 1952 and 1953. Alongside these drawings, the exhibition also presents seven serigraphs on paper by Timothy Akis (c. 1944-1984) and Mathias Kauage (c. 1944-2003), two influential Papua New Guinean artists from the same generation as the young artists featured. Additionally, the exhibition includes 11 works of Sepik ethnic art from the Brignoni Collection (MUSEC).
These ethnic art pieces are displayed in both the Spazio Maraini, alongside the children's drawings, and the Spazio Tesoro, where a video interview with Dadi Wirz complements the exhibition.

Recently, the large-scale interaction between the native peoples of Borneo (dayak) and the "outside" has been marked to the point of questioning part of the values, traditional ways of life and subsistence of the Dayak, which are the basis their identity and their sense of belonging to the group and to an environmental context. Among the Dayak Ngaju from South of Borneo, the safeguarding and promotion of local tradition was strongly desired by the local communities, who strongly supported the promotion of their cultural heritage during field research projects within the framework of the agreement between the government of the Indonesian Province of Kalimantan Tengah (center) and the Museo delle Culture of Lugano.
2017 – Public conference entitled: "Borneo. The last terra incognita?” organized by the Musée du Quai Branly Jacques Chirac and the MUSEC (Museo delle Culture de Lugano), held in Paris. A study day based on a series of seven presentations designed to offer the audience an exploratory introduction to Borneo through an analysis of the dynamics that have played a central role in the formation and 'reappropriation' of its identity.

The sapuyung ceremonial hats are a vanishing Ngaju cultural heritage, testimony at many levels of their sociocultural traditions. The production of these hats is the privilege of very few women master weavers, who are the heirs of an ancient tradition hand down to the chosen only. The ceremonial sapuyung legacy already disappeared in some Ngaju areas of Southern Borneo, but it is still alive in several parts of the Katingan River area, where for the first time a field research has been made for their knowledge, between 2001 and 2011. The ceremonial sapuyung are characterized by the presence of a rich and unique iconography depicting deities, myths, medical plants of the forest, environment and objects of material culture. The hats have been studied through anthropology of art perspective based on a multifocal analysis. The analysis is built on the epistemological axis given by the progressive clarification of six areas concerning form, word, function, significance, values and context. The accurate clarification of the six areas introduce to the knowledge of the ceremonial hats and emphasis their importance in the Ngaju kaharingan tradition as, probably, the most important object of material culture ideologically related to their identity, culture and environment.

Presentasi dilakukan dengan pendekatan historis akan perkembangan betang Tumbang Gagu untuk menunjukkan nilai betang sebagai bagian dari sejarah dan budaya Dayak Ngaju.
Dengan mempresentasikan cara hidup tradisional Dayak dan menguraikan bawa tradisi adalah sumber tindakan kita, identitas kita, cara berpikir kita dan menyimpulkan bahwa kita adalah hasil tradisi.
Dengan mengetahui, mempelajari, dan mengakui tradisi, sejarah dan identitas kita, maka jika kita mempunyai keinginan dan bertindak, Betang Tumbang Gagu bisa masuk ke dalam Warisan Budaya Dunia.

In recent decades an increasing level of interaction between the native peoples of Borneo-the Dayak-and the 'outside world', has resulted in questioning some of the Dayak's traditional values, ways of life and livelihoods. In essence, the very foundation of their ethnic identity and sense of belonging both to the group and to an environmental context. During my field research projects in south-central Borneo, I found that the protection and promotion of local tradition was strongly desired by the communities of the Dayak Ngaju people who received support for the promotion of their cultural heritage within the framework agreement between The Central Kalimantan Provincial Government and the Museum of Cultures Lugano.

Récemment, l’interaction à grande échelle entre les peuples natifs de Bornéo et l’ «extérieur» a été marquée  au point de mettre en cause une partie des valeurs, des modalités de vie et de subsistance traditionnels des Dayak, qui sont à la base de leur identité et de leur sentiment d’appartenance au groupe et à un contexte environnemental. Auprès des Ngaju, la sauvegarde et la valorisation de la tradition locale a été fortement voulue par les communautés locales, qui ont vivement soutenu la valorisation de leur patrimoine culturel lors des projets de recherche de terrain dans le cadre de l’accord entre le gouvernement de la Province indonésienne de Kalimantan Tengah (centre) et le Museo delle Culture de Lugano.

Di bumi, kehidupan berdampingan dengan kematian. Definisi kematian secara umum adalah akhir dari kehidupan, ketiadaan atau berhentinya sesuatu yang menghidupkan dalam organisme biologis, yang diantaranya adalah berhentinya proses bernafas. Tetapi, kepastian akan keakhiran total "seluruh kehidupan" saat kematian datang, tidak selalu dapat didefinisikan "total" dikarenakan berbagai macam kebudayaan yang mempercayai adanya kehidupan jiwa di dalam badan.
