This article focuses on the seamstresses at Algots in their struggle for their jobs at Algots Nord textile industries in rural localizations in the Swedish north (West Bothnia) in 1972. The textile company Algots Nord (a subsidiary to Algot Johansson AB) had factories in Skellefteå, Norsjö, and Lycksele. This localization implied labor market participation among women who had not previously held paid employment. After just a few years, bankruptcy was announced, and all three northern factories had to close. The downturn, followed by protests and demonstrations, were at center of societal debates. A solidarity movement comprising loosely organized individual and collective initiatives was formed. The purpose of this article is to study the writing of the history of the seamstresses at Algots and show its symbolic position in relation to the women’s movement. I want to make visible local stories about experiences of power and set them against the collective memory of the feminist move...

This article considers colonial rhetoric manifested in representations of early settlement in the mining town of Kiruna in northernmost Sweden. Kiruna was founded more than 100 years ago by the LKAB Company with its centre the prosperous mine on Sami land. Continued iron ore mining has made it necessary to relocate the town centre a few kilometres north-east of its original location to ensure the safety of the people. The ongoing process of the town’s transformation due to industrial expansion has given rise to the creation of a memorial park between the town and the mine, in which two historical photographs have been erected on huge concrete blocks. For the Swedish Sami, the indigenous people, the transformation means further exploitation of their reindeer grazing lands and forced adaption to industrial expansion. The historical photographs in the memorial park fit into narratives of colonial expansion and exploration that represent the town’s colonial past. Both pictures are conne...

Debates on gender equality policy in Sweden assume that women’s labor market participation is central to gender equality and should be promoted via special initiatives and programs. This paper examines how gender equality discourses have changed over time, analyzing Swedish state labor market policy in the 1980s and 1990s, special labor market initiatives to eliminate gender segregation and encourage nontraditional gendered work choices, and contemporary state subsidies for paid domestic work (i.e., tax deduction for domestic services). Critically interpreting these reforms reveals consistencies and continuities in how labor market participation is viewed as the key promoter of gender equality, revealing transformations in how gender equality is understood and constructed. A transition is discernible from state-funded programs and reforms to governmental agencies/authorities and state subsidies to promote enterprise and the growth of specific labor market sectors.
