The Germanic settlement in Štúrovo is situated to the north of the present-day Štúrovo in South West Slovakia, in the southern part of the lower Hron river basin, in the area of a former military training ground. It lies on the left bank of the river Danube, south-west of the strategically important confluence of the Hron and the Danube, approximately 5 km from the Pannonian Solva (fig. 1). The settlement has a particularly significant position among the Germanic settlements of the North-Pannonian limes studied so far. A rescue excavation was carried out in years 1956-1957 (T. Kolník). In total 66 settlement structures from the Roman Period (stages B2, B2/C1 and C3) and the Migration Period (stage D1) were unearthed. These include 12 huts and 44 pit objects (Kolník 1962, p. 357-362). The area of the Germanic settlement was largely disrupted by an Avar-Slavonic burial ground (280 graves; Točík 1968) and military training trenches. This was a major complication to the archaeological c...

The aim of the article is to draw attention to a sole find of a clay mold for casting counterfeit coins of Emperor Leopold I. The artifact was unexpectedly unearthed at the National Cultural Monument Pustý hrad (Deserted Castle) in Zvolen. In the 2019 research season, during the excavation of the rubble backfill of the flanking tower ditch in the eastern line of the Upper Castles fortification, five fragments from a casting mold were discovered. The item serves as proof of counterfeiting activity, and it is a unique modern find, dated at the end of the 17th century, not only from Deserted Castle, but in general from the territory of Slovakia, as we do not know a similar artefact from other castles.

The National Cultural Monument of the Pustý hrad castle in Zvolen towers majestically on a hill at the south edge of the town of Zvolen, in the heart of Slovakia. The interest in research into this site goes back to the 18th century. Modern archaeological research conducted annually since 1992 has confirmed the importance of the castle as the seat of the Zvolen County Committee and a favourite leisure and hunting location of Hungarian kings in the High Middle Ages. The article introduces the individual stages of research into this significant site and presents its results, as well as their contribution not only to the history of the castle but also to the enhancement of the specialist and lay public's awareness of the potential and results of archaeological research. The paper also sums up all known published outcomes regarding Pustý hrad in Zvolen. The presented article presents the unique find of a plastically decorated bone handle from the high medieval Pustý hrad Castle in Zvolen. Its first part was discovered in 1996 during excavations of V. Hanuliak in the interior of the tower in the eastern line of the Upper castle’s fortification. The second, smaller, part was found in excavation season 2019 in the moat of the same tower. The aim is to carry out a complex analysis of the artifact with relief decoration and its setting in a wider chronological context. The relief motif on the handle represents a figure of a knight in a helm kneeling before another standing figure (a lady?) with her arms around him, pressing his head against her chest. On the basis of analogies, we interprete the image as a love scene. From the historical point of view, the helm depicted on the knight’s head is important; it can be dated to the beginning of the 14th century. The decorated handle is a luxurious item which is an expression of table maners ...

The Medieval Road Network in Surroundings of the Deserted Castle. Analysis Based on Anthropogenic Relief Forms Studied area around the Deserted Castle with forests and two antecedent valleys belongs to the most valuable sites in the Zvolen cadastral area. The castle had important role to keep watch on the entrance routes to the rich mining towns during medieval ages. Antecedent valleys with steep slopes and rocky cliffs create natural conditions of defence. The castle was vulnerable particularly from the forests to the South, where historic access roads are situated. The main aim of the research is identification of the medieval seelements and historic roads dependence to the selected natural factors and conditions. Relations of the historic seelements to the natural environment are observed in the wider region and historic roads are studied in the closer area, in the forests around the Deserted Castle. They are identified by global position and navigation system in the field. We present location and routing of the roads in relation to the relief aaributes (slope, meso-forms configuration) and to the geological substrate, where we indicate resistance to weathering of the rocks, in the small spatial segment. We define in the results the complex of important natural factors as: geological substrate, groundwater and springs, specific aaributes of relief which limited location of the seelements and related access roads during the medieval ages. Hlavným cieľom nášho výskumu bolo preto určenie polohy stredovekého osídlenia a historických ciest v teréne v závislosti od prírodných podmienok a faktorov. Objektom výskumu boli formy antropo-génneho reliéfu, ktoré reprezentujú špecifickú črtu kultúrnej krajiny a súvisia so stredovekým osídlením a cestami v okolí Pustého hradu nad Zvolenom. Vychádzame z predpokladu, že existujú dva základné faktory, ktoré limitujú polohu stredovekého osídlenia v teréne, t. j. možnosť obrany a zdroj vody, a že hlavnou úlohou stredovekých ciest bolo poskytnutie čo najpohodlnejšieho a bezpečného spojenia sídiel.

Abstrakt: Mincovňa Kremnica, postavená v priestore hradobného systému mesta Kremnica, predstavuje nasledovníka najstaršej mincovne v starom komorskom dvore. Jeden z najstarších nepretržite produkujú-cich podnikov na svete si počas svojej existencie vyžadoval početné prestavby. Posledné úpravy, realizo-vané v rokoch 2010–2014, priniesli okrem pozostatkov novovekých architektúr aj poznatky o stredovekom opevnení mesta Kremnica. Vo východnej časti južného nádvoria, tzv. nového komorského dvora, sa doložil bližšie neurčiteľný stredoveký múr. Vo východnom krídle zo záveru 19. storočia boli objavené poškodené murivá mestského opevnenia zo začiatku 15. storočia a torzá veže barbakanu z druhej štvrtiny 16. storočia. Kľúčové slová: vrcholný stredovek – raný novovek – Kremnica – mincovňa – mestské opevnenie – barbakan. Fragmentary Architecture Found in the Kremnica Mint during the Excavations in 2010–2014 Abstract: The Kremnica mint was built within the medieval fortification of the town as a successor of the oldest mint located in the old chamber court. It is one of the oldest establishments in operation in the world. The mint has been rebuilt several times. The latest reconstruction in the years 2010–2014 brought, apart from information about modern-age mint architecture, also a new insight into the medieval fortification of Kremnica. A medieval wall was excavated in the eastern part of the south mint court (" the new chamber court "). Some damaged masonry, part of the medieval fortification erected in the early 15th century, was unearthed in the eastern wing from the end of the 19th century, along with the remains of a barbican from the second quarter of the 16th century.

Abstrakt: Cieľom príspevku je predstaviť a interpretovať nálezovú situáciu na NKP Hrad Dobrá Niva v ka-tastrálnom území obce Podzámčok, okres Zvolen. Archeologický výskum uskutočnený v rokoch 2013 a 2014 priniesol nové informácie o vrcholno-a neskorostredovekom až novovekom hrade Dobrá Niva z hľadiska materiálnej kultúry i stavebno-konštrukčnom vývoji hradného paláca a predhradia. Deštruktívny i nedeš-truktívny archeologický výskum hradu, kombinovaný so štúdiom prameňov, pomohol k spresneniu pôdo-rysu hradného paláca a poznaniu doteraz neznámych prestavieb. Doplnené boli zároveň aj údaje o chro-nológii osídlenia a existencii drevenej palisády v blízkosti terénnej hrany vo východnej časti predhradia. Kľúčové slová: Dobrá Niva hrad – archeologický výskum – terénna situácia – vrcholný a neskorý stredo-vek – včasný novovek. Abstract: This contribution sets out to present and interpret the context of excavations at the Dobrá Niva castle, a national cultural monument, in the cadastral zone of the Podzámčok village, Zvolen district. Archaeological research conducted in the years 2013 and 2014 brought new information about the high and late medieval – early modern age castle as regards its material culture and the building development of the palace and the bailey. Destructive and non-destructive archaeological research of the castle combined with the study of sources helped specify the ground plan of the palace and identify hitherto unknown reconstructions. At the same time, information about the settlement chronology and the existence of a wooden palisade near the geological fault in the eastern section of the bailey was expanded. Key words: Dobrá Niva castle – archaeological research – historical context – high and late Middle Ages – early modern age.

The Quadian occupation from the 1st century AD in the Hron and Ipeľ regions is not documented. During the phase B2 the Quadi began to penetrate eastwards, into the Lower Hron and Lower Ipeľ regions. This way they established the easternmost advanced settlement zone of the Danube Germans in the Early Roman Period. It is confirmed by the occupation of the locality " Vojenské cvičisko " (Military training ground) in Štúrovo. The first Germanic village can be detected here in the later stage of the Early Roman Period. From the whole context of discovery follows that the occupation in Štúrovo was most intensive in the 2nd half of the 2nd century AD. In the end of the 2nd century AD and in the 1st half of the 3rd century AD the Štúrovo village experienced a marked decrease in settlement activity. The site was intensively occupied again in the Late Roman Period and in the Migration Period
