English Abstract: Whether it is constructed on acceptance and praise or on reserve and negation, the style of E. Lovinescu’s portraits is based on concision and expressive refinement. It is, somehow, a classic style. The diarist is perhaps less preocuppied by the preciseness of his observation, than by the expressivity of sentences, by the sobre authenticity of the notations, by the clarity and coherence of the utterances as well as by the delight of representing the revelatory detail.

The book explores the complex relationships between the emperors of Rome (from Augustus to Hadrian) and some of the most significant writers of the era (Virgil, Horace, Propertiu, Ovid, Seneca, Lucan, Petronius, Pliny the Elder, Martial, Juvenal, Tacit, Pliny the Younger). In an effort to reconstruct vestiges of an inevitably fragmented past, the author cuts data, details, literary forms and ideas through which she outlines the force of writing and the weaknesses of writers, much too close to decision-making centers, authoritarian principles and capricious principles of Rome.

English Abstract: Integration and alienation, identity and rupture, belonging to an original model and the continuous tendency of surpassing it, are some of the determinant peculiarities of Cioran’s ideation, which is legitimized by assuming an identity both originating and intentional uprooting, by transgression of ethnic boundaries.

The books of literary criticism of Alex Ștefănescu include reading notes, comments, interpretations and analyzes. The critic uses a strategy persuading readers through a language of deliberate simplicity, with a detached writing. The critic cultivates a certain hedonism of the encounter with literature, an unrepressed lust for reading and rereading. In the case of Alex Ștefănescu, frankness, the sharpness of the statements is combined with a dose of critical impressionism, determined by the identification with the relief of the literary work.

This article presents a brief history of the concept of discourse competence as part of the communicative competence in a language, at the same time attempting to define it according to the available literature and highlight its relevance for present-day written academic discourse. The challenges encountered by non-native speakers of English who wish to publish research results in international journals will also be discussed in view of the current requirements of academic writing.

Vintilă Horia’s novel God was born in exile seems to be written from the perspective of a refusal of history, of an opening to imagination and esoterism, to the detriment of a positive valorisation of the facts of the immediate reality. Fiction is thus the one that legitimizes Ovid’s existential adventure, the one that certifies his resistance to an annihilated and aggressive History. In this novel, we are witnesses of a spiritual metamorphosis, of a spiritual catabathic itinerary, whereby the retransmission in the values of esotericism and self, as well as the understanding of the meanings of existence, is the guarantee of sacrificial death and symbolic resurrection.

The resources of a playful, parabolic and extensive imaginary lead to the creation of the illusion of a narrative that knows and accepts its limits, through a certain detachment from its own metabolism, but also through an approach of textual deconstruction. Experiments, postmodern fable strategies, autotelic representations and textualist configurations are very relevant for Petru Cimpoeşu's intertextual and metatextual prose, which does not reject the algorithm of the story itself, a testimony that reveals a fragment that reveals the writer's intentionality. Petru Cimpoeşu is an important prose writer of our contemporary literature.

Nicolae Oprea’s books remark themselves through rigour, the reverberations of erudition and expressivity of his critical phrase. In these books, and especially in Provinciile imaginare, Nicolae Oprea expresses his predilection towards a segment of the Romanian prose characterised through the “pre-eminence of the space in connection with the character or the event”, through a synthetic vision which combines the existential openness and the deepness of ideas. His critical endeavour therefore highlights a reference horizon of fiction on the border of the imaginary with reality. Refusing an inflamed tonality and rhetoric, being a promoter of the neutral observation, albeit not entirely lacking in affectivity, Nicolae Oprea knows how to highlight the allure of the works’ shades and details, the point of his critical thinking being the balance between the critical concept, refined, essential, and the actual image of the work, the example which would justify the demonstration.

In his book entitled Avatarurile lui Orfeu (Orpheus’s Avatars), Dumitru Chioaru presents the two hypostases of the Orphism, the orphic and anti or post(orphic). Beginning his line of argument from the myth of Orpheus and crystallising his critical options with a hermeneutic perspective on the problem in question, Dumitru Chioaru manages to achieve a larger picture of the lyricism related to the orphic myth, by analysing the poetic works of thirty poets. The Orphism’s hypostases are depicted by means of two exegetic methods, both used in an irreproachable manner (mythological criticism and hermeneutics). Dumitru Chioaru’s endeavour in the history of the universal lyricism and in everything which lyricism represents, in its multiple hypostases, proves the presence of a fine hermeneutist, attentive to everything which the paradigm of Orphism implies, a paradigm he manages to define by capturing it in some ample sentences, both clarifying and expressive.

Ion Pop’s most recent book, Cărţi la alegere with its subtitle Poeţi şi poezie (Tracus Arte Publishing, 2020) represents more than the title makes is believe, more than what the poet himself says. The book brings together the literary reviews published by Ion Pop in different cultural magazines between 2000 and 2019, exposing before the readers a series of “fragmented readings” dependant to a great extent on the editorial context of these years. The critic, an “active spectator” of the Romanian literary scene, admits his inappetence for the often confusing image of the backstage, of biased manoeuvres, movements and image strategies, preferring, as he writes in the Foreword, to be left “alone with the texts and texts alone”. On the other hand, one cannot ignore the ambition of his thesis, as Ion Pop confesses his “secret impulse of fitting a mosaic piece of these types of glosses in a more comprehensive assembly”, capable of highlighting the “figure in the carpet” “calling to unity t...
