This volume brings together essays from different fields of the humanities and social sciences that offer a fresh look at the complexity of artistic and cultural contacts, transfers, and exchanges between Europe and the Middle East. The studies reach far beyond the geographical regions where Europe and the Middle East have met and interacted throughout their long histories, such as the eastern Mediterranean, the south Caucasus, and the Balkans. Their focus is on the variety of “contact zones” of the two worlds with specific artistic creativity, characterized by dynamic processes of movement and interchange between various cultural entities in the broadest and most complex sense of the word. The studies shed new light on diverse phenomena of the “in-between” or “liminal” spaces in art and culture, with special interest in artists and art works from ancient to modern times, from fine arts and architecture to music and video.

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Enlightenment in Carniola influenced the development of interest in scientific approaches to designing nature, which were adopted to a greater or lesser extent by many Carniolan intellectuals. In Carniola, this circle of intellectuals gathered around patron Baron Sigmund Zois, who did not remain indifferent to this new attitude towards nature, gardens and flora. In fact, Zois arranged parks in Ljubljana with his brother, a botanist, and opened them to the public. In addition, he corresponded about new plant species with Baron Josef von Erberg, who was also a garden art enthusiast. New plants were an essential component of the new garden style which was then becoming increasingly popular throughout Europe. It could be said that these plants represented new exotic richness of gardens which became an object of great interest to many noblemen and clergymen. Thus, Barons Zois and von Erberg were only two among many noblemen engaged in one way or another in botany, foreign plant species or the new garden style in Carniola around 1800.
