ABSTRACT. In December of 2011 Parliament of Lithuania (Seimas) adopted the Law on Probation, which comes into force in July of 2012. In such a way new legislation established not only new definition in Lithuanian correctional law (probationer, probation officer, etc.) but also established innovative means for more efficient goals of probation.

The expected results of these innovations in probation to create the conditions for changes in criminal policy and to decrease the use of deprivation of liberty, because this kind of punishment application in Lithuania compared to European Union countries is too frequent and irrational.
