On behalf of the Highways Agency, InterRoute embarked on the design and construction of a suitable crossing. A structural timber beam or truss bridge was initially investigated but this was later rejected in favour of a structural steel solution with timber cladding. A steel truss superstructure was used for ease, speed and convenience of construction, and timber was used for its aesthetic qualities on most of the visible parts of the bridge. Effort was made, within the constraints of the budget, to design a bridge in harmony with its rural setting, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We begin by showing that important relations exist between Web statistical studies, search engines, and standard techniques in optimization: the web is a graph which can be searched for relevant information with an evaluation function and with operators based on standard search engines or local exploration. We deal in this paper with the problem of automatically generating the style and the layout of we... more We deal in this paper with the problem of automatically generating the style and the layout of web pages and web sites in a real world application where many web sites a re considered. One of the main difficulty is to take into account the user preferences which are crucial in web sites design. We propose the use of an interactive genetic algorithm which generates solutions (styles, layouts) and which lets the user select the solutions that he favors based on their graphical representation. Two encodings have been defined for this problem, one linear and fixed length encoding for representing the style, and one variable length encoding based on HTML tables syntax for the layout. We present the results obtained by our method and the analysis of users behavior.

We review the main difficulties of the problem like taking into account the user aesthetic preferences. We propose the use of an interactive genetic algorithm to generate solutions that satisfy user preferences. This work represents as far as we know one of the first real world application of interactive GAs. We have defined two encodings, one for the style and one for the layout. We show typical results obtained with our system and how user interact with it. We conclude on this work by analyzing further developments of this research in other domains.
