Agriculture is a significant emitter of GHGs. Especially ruminant production systems that contribute substantially to global warming due to the enteric fermentation. Ruminant production systems are often integrated in mixed farm systems, including arable production, grassland systems and possibly energy production, which may provide opportunities for mitigation of GHGs when considered as a whole system. The paper analyzes systematically the GHG mitigation potentials of a mixed farm system, which represents a typical farm in northeastern Germany by modeling interactions and substance flows between different subsystems within a model farm. The following mitigation strategies are compared: 1) increased milk production per dairy cow, 2) integration of a biogas plant. The results show that the integration of the biogas plant has the greatest mitigation effect, followed by increased performance of the dairy system. Each mitigation practice has specific uncertainties which determine the ov...

It has been shown that economic potentials for site-specific fertilization strategies are fairly low in many cases. The economic potential of different site- specific technologies depends on the site-specific response of the crops to the managed inputs. The knowledge of site-specific response may help farmers to tailor their investment decisions on the appropriate technologies. Our paper presents an on-farm experimental approach to identify the economic potential of site-specific fertilization strategies at low costs. This approach has been implemented on a 90 ha field in Germany, which was planted with wheat. We conducted a strip trial on a field with randomly chosen fertilization levels over a total strip length of 1.5 km. Fertilization was conducted with a conventional spreader with a GPS navigation system. Site-specific grain yield was recorded with the harvester and soil information was gathered with EM 38. Furthermore, grain quality was surveyed with hand selected samples in t...

The practices of land use should take into account the demands of nature conservation since several typical species of the agricultural landscape are close to extinction. But there is a lack of indicators which quantify the compatibleness of agricultural land use practices with nature conservation targets as a prerequisite for the economic–ecologic optimization of land use. This paper presents the

Within the Research Network on Agro-ecosystems Munich (Forschungsverbund Agrarökosysteme München, FAM) strategies to approach optimal land use have been investigated since 1990 in terms of minimization of environmental impacts and maximization of profit from agricultural lands. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the interactions of the economic and ecological demands on agricultural land use with model calculations for

The paper analyzes site-specific and uniform management options for wheat production with respect to grain quality. Besides site-specific fertilization the economic potential of segregation of different grain qualities is the subject of this paper. Yield and quality response to fertilizer were taken from field experiments in Germany to calculate site-specific response functions. The economic optima were calculated for uniform management

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of supplemental irrigation on the amount of N2O emissions on a sandy soil in north-east Germany. N2O flux measurements were carried out over two vegetation periods from the emergence of plants to harvest. The level of N2O emissions was low, which is typical for sandy soils in north-east Germany. In both periods, irrigation had no increasing effect on N2O emissions. Relevant factors were the soil temperature and the soil water-filled pore space (WFPS), which were mainly influenced by weather conditions. This may indicate that nitrification was the main source of N2O emissions. In conclusion, this study has confirmed that sandy soils under weather conditions of north-east Germany generally have a very low potential for N2O emissions.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the economic whole farm impact of the implementation of precision-farming technologies. Therefore, two farms were analyzed, which had implemented different precision agriculture technologies several years ago. The farms can be regarded as early adopters of precision agriculture technologies in two very different agricultural production areas. One of the two analyzed farms (1560
