The BalkansTASSOS ANASTASSIADIS and NATHALIE CLAYER, eds., Society, Politics, and State Formation in Southeastern Europe During the 19th century (Athens: Alpha Bank, 2011), Pp. 403, £ 39.00 clothThis excellent volume devoted to state formation in Southeastern Europe during the long nineteenth century is premised on the conviction that "it is more fruitful to engage in a comparative study of the different state cases in the region rather than comparing them individually with Western European states" (19). Only in this way, assert the editors in their comprehensive introduction, can one avoid the biased, deterministic and ultimately useless diagnoses of clientelism, incomplete liberalization, absence of civil society, traditionalism and backwardness, offered to explain the failure of the transplanted and caricatured models of Western modernity. The volume seeks to challenge this verdict by showing that state formation was "a complicated affair that involved juggling var...

This book explores the historial role of the Balkan Wars. In Eastern Europe, the two Balkan Wars of 1912/13 had greater importance than the First World War for the construction of nations and states. This volume shows how these “short” wars profoundly changed the sociopolitical situation in the Balkans, with consequences that are still felt today. More than one hundred years later, the successors of the belligerent states in Southeastern Europe memorialize the wars as heroic highlights of their respective pasts. Furthermore, the metaphor that the Balkans were Europe’s “powder keg”, perpetuated at the beginning of the twentieth century in the face of these wars, was reactivated in both the West and the East up through the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s. The authors entangle the hitherto exclusive national master narratives and analyse them cogently and trenchantly for an international readership. They make an indispensable contribution to the proper integration of the Balkan Wars into the European historical memory of twentieth-century warfare.

This article reconsiders the Western and Eastern nationalism actually the former's branch from a renewed perspective namely one which takes into account the category of time. There are two levels at which the problem of temporality can be introduced. The first is at the level of discourse of the nationalism itself while the second is the explication of the uneven development in historiography as well as the interpreting of precedence, derivativeness and traveling of ideas. Benedect Anderson is quoted with his idea that models of nationalism are easy to copy and theat European nationalisms are copies pirated from the Creole pioneers in the Americas. Johannes Fabian's suggestion for anthropological research are taken into consideration for the historical analysis with a demonstration that the other can be met on the same ground in the same time
