The ordination of women as rabbis is a relatively new phenomenon in Jewish communities worldwide, but especially in the State of Israel. Israel’s non-Orthodox movements began to ordain women as rabbis only twenty years after the first woman rabbi was ordained in the United States. Today, women rabbis continue to confront deeply rooted cultural concepts and stereotypes while seeking to reshape the place of women in Judaism.In this article, I shall analyze and interpret Israeli women rabbis’ shared experiences as extracted from their life stories, using folklore research tools. Analyzing these stories using the narrative-package model revealed their commonalities with Vladimir Propp’s fairy-tale narrative structure.
The content of these narratives by pioneer Israeli women rabbis emphasizes the deconstruction of gender roles in Judaism and in Israeli society, even as new structures are being established, enabling women to take religious leadership functions upon themselves. The narrators are aware of the numerous challenges they face, but most of them are deeply motivated to continue exerting their influence in different areas of Israeli society.

הסמכת נשים לרבנות היא תופעה חדשה ביהדות. התופעה היא חלוצית בעולם וחדשה אף יותר בישראל. מסיפורי החיים של מספר נשים חלוצות שהוסמכו לרבנות, ניתן לנסות ללמוד על התופעה ולשפוך אור על מקומה של האישה הרבה בחברה הישראלית. בחינת סיפורי החיים בהקשר תרבותי והיסטורי קונקרטי עשויה לסייע בהבנת הבשלתה של התופעה רק במאה העשרים. נוסף על כך, המבט הפרשני בכלים מתחום חקר הפולקלור על תופעת האישה המוסמכת לרבנות, תוך כדי הניסיון לשקף את זהותה על פי מה שהמרואיינות בחרו לספר, מאפשר ניתוח הבוחן את מקום האישה הן במרחב הציבורי היהודי והן בחברה הישראלית.
לצורך המחקר ראיינתי נשים שהוסמכו לרבנות בישראל הן בתנועה הרפורמית והן בתנועה הקונסרבטיבית. התמות העולות מהמגבשים הסיפוריים לוקחות את הקורא לאורך מסלול חיי המרואיינת, מזיכרונות ילדותה כפי שהללו נקשרים בתודעתה, דרך פנייתה ללימודי הסמכה לרבנות וטקס הסמכתה, ועד לאינטראקציה של הרבה עם החברה הישראלית. המוּדעות לשבירת קטגוריות התרבות גבר־אישה על ידי נשים שהוסמכו לרבנות באה לידי ביטוי בהיבטים שונים מחיי הרבה באינטראקציה שלה עם מעגלים חברתיים שונים.
בחינת קורפוס סיפורי החיים מגלה כי עצם הסמכת אישה לרבנות בהקשר של המסורת היהודית, משמש מעין סיפור מעשייה. על כן, במרכז המאמר אבחן את מבנה סיפורֵי החיים של הנשים שהוסמכו לרבנות על פי תבנית סיפורי מעשיות הפלאים של החוקר הרוסי ולדימיר פרופּ. המשותף בסיפוריהן, והמציג דמיון עלילתי עם מבנה מעשיות הפלאים אליבא דפרופ, מאפשר בחינה ופירוק של הבניות תרבות במסורת היהודית, וכמו כן בחינה ופירוק של הבניות מגדר אוניברסליוֹת. מסיפורי החיים מצטיירת תמונה ולפיה הנשים שהוסמכו לרבנות מבקשות לעצב מחדש את מקום האישה ביהדות והן ממשיכות להיאבק בסטריאוטיפים בעלי שורשים עמוקים, הבאים לידי ביטוי בסוגות שונות בפולקלור. סיפורן אינו מובן מאליו, והוא מהווה תופעה נשית המקיימת הן דיאלוג דיאכרוני עם התרבות היהודית לתקופותיה, והן דיאלוג סינכרוני פנים־מגדרי, בין־מגדרי, בין־דתי ובין זרמים שונים ביהדות. כך אנו עדים להתהוותה של מסורת יהודית חדשה המבקשת להתמסד.

הספר שלפנינו מתעד בהרחבה ובפירוט רב את חייה של האישה היהודייה בדרום תוניסיה, מרגע היוולדהּ עד היעשותה חמות לכלותיה. החיים המסורתיים המתוארים בו חלפו מן העולם בעקבות תהליכי המודרניזציה והעלייה למדינת ישראל, והספר מתעד זיכרונות מהימים ההם מפי נשים שנולדו בתוניסיה בשני העשורים הראשונים של המאה העשרים ועלו לארץ בשנות החמישים שלה. המחקר שעליו מבוסס הספר מסתמך על עבודת שדה ובה עשרות ראיונות המתארים תרבות נשית חומרית, אוראלית ורוחנית, שלא תועדה לפני כן על ידי בנותיה ובניה או על ידי חוקרי תרבות. נוסף על כך, המחקר מסתמך על הספרות העממית העשירה של יהודי תוניסיה, על עבודותיהם של חוקרים אירופיים ועל סיפורי מסע. ניתוח המקורות המעמיק מעוגן בתיאוריות מתחום חקר הפולקלור, הספרות העממית והאנתרופולוגיה. המחברת מבקשת לתאר בפירוט את חיי האישה היהודייה במשפחה ובחברה, על פי שיטתו של ואן ז'נפ, המנחה את החוקרים ללכת אל האנשים שאותם הם מבקשים לחקור, לבדוק את ביתם ותכולתו ולאחר מכן לתאר את חיי הפרטים בכל יום ובכל רגע, וכן את חיי החברה שבתוכה הם חיים ואת תפקידיהם של הפרטים בה ויחס החברה  ואכן, על אף המרחק בזמן ובמרחב בין עבודת השדה למתואר בספר, 1.)29אליהם (עמ' מהפרקים השונים עולה תמונה חיה ומפורטת של חיי היום־יום בדרום תוניסיה של תחילת המאה העשרים. המתואר בספר מוכיח כי הנשים, המתגוררות בישראל שנים רבות, אצרו בקרבן ערכי לשון ותרבות, ואולם נבצר מהן לתת להם ביטוי בתרבות כור ההיתוך שקלטה אותן.

"I Recognized the Holidays According to the Food" - Tradition and Memory Among the Jewish Community of Argentina

The article focuses on the place of Jewish women in shaping the collective memory of the Jewish community in Argentina based on their affinity to the traditional eating system. The corpus of study revealed layers of interpretation that indicate that the place of women is central to the collective memory building associated with Jewish tradition and identity.
The Jewish community of Argentina is the largest in Latin America. Its origins trace back to the great waves of immigration from Eastern Europe to the New World that took place from the end of the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century. Eastern European cuisine symbolizes what's Jewish "lo Judio" in Argentina for most of the community and for the non-Jewish majority. Research on eating habits among the Jews of Argentina is scarce, however, by reviewing material that document women's domestic activity and listening to their personal stories, it may be assumed that the lack of research literature is related to a patriarchal perception, which excludes all praxis related to women.  Nevertheless, a close look suggests that the domestic praxis, perceived as feminine, nourishes the public praxis perceived masculine in this culture, thus allowing it to exist and grow.
In the interpretation of symbols and their cultural significance, some paradoxes do emerge, attesting to the complexity of the interrelationship between the domestic and the public, and between the community and the "other". Throughout the article a longitudinal axis is presented that links women to the traditional eating system and shows how it is intended to strengthen and preserve Jewish identity. Simultaneously, a horizontal axis is presented in which the traditional and daily Argentine eating culture takes place. This axis is portrayed as strengthening the Argentine identity of members of the community. The contrast and the encounter between the axes is examined through two central symbols, the "Gefilte-fish", which is portrayed as a feminine dish and the "Asado" or roasting of meat, perceived as masculine.  Thus, an examination of the dialogue that a minority group maintains with Jewish traditional eating habits and the eating habits of the majority culture, tells the story of the group in a unique way.

In recent years, much has been written about women's critical contribution to the Zionist project through women's organizations. However, the contribution of Jewish women in Latin America to the Zionist project is scarcely documented or referred to in the historiography of their communities. In the present article I will focus on the activities of the Argentinean federation of the Women's International Zionist Organization (OSFA-WIZO) between 1926 and 1970, and on how the organization utilized home-based praxis to raise funds and promote goals set by its leaders in Israel and Argentina. The historical and cultural context within which the organization operated shaped a unique public feminine endeavor. Thousands of Jewish women responded to the call to become a Jalutzah del Galuth—a woman pioneer of the galut (exile, Diaspora)—and enlisted to work for women and children in the Land of Israel. Zionist ethos, folk creativity and feminine currency stood at the core of the network that was woven between Jewish women in Argentina and Israel, despite the physical and cultural distance. The attempt to instill a Hebrew culture that included concepts such as manual labor and gender equality among Jewish women in Argentina demanded that the discourse be adapted to the local culture. The call to women through slogans and images to integrate these values and become embodiments of the “new Hebrew woman” demanded navigation between tradition and modernity. As the community at large examined the imported Zionist discourse, the Argentinean WIZO women sought to embrace the values of sisterhood and gender equality presented to them by the Zionist ideology. They did so while simultaneously maintaining their locally assigned gender roles as housewives and mothers. In retrospect, the organization contributed to the empowerment of Jewish women in Argentina by bestowing appreciation and public recognition upon their efforts.

המאמר מבקש לתת ביטוי לחיי הנשים שעלו מארגנטינה לישראל עד סוף שנות ה-70 של המאה ה-20. לצורך כך נבחנות תפיסות ורובדי משמעות העולים מתוך סיפורים אישיים המתמקדים בתקופת ההגירה והקליטה. מהלך של הגירה, גם אם באופן סימבולי מכונה "עלייה", מציב שאלות ואתגרים יומיומיים. המאמר בוחן את החוויה הנשית בהקשר היסטורי ותרבותי הן מדינת המקור הן במדינה הקולטת, כמו גם את תפיסת השינוי בעת המעבר שעיצב את חיי הנשים ובני משפחן בישראל.
אם כי חומרים פופולאריים בעברית כגון בלוגים ותוכניות טלוויזיה העוסקים בעולים מארגנטינה מתארים אותם באופן סטריאוטיפי כשרויים בשמחה תמידית, תאווי אכילת בשר, ריקודי טנגו וכדורגל, ההבחנה שעבור מקצת העולים זוהי הגירה שנייה, ורובם צאצאים למהגרים שהגיעו ליבשת אמריקה, מציירת תמונה מורכבת יותר של חייהם אשר במרכזה המושגים מסורת, זיכרון וזהות. כתוצאה מכך, בחינת היבטים מחיי הנשים ובני משפחתן מובילה למסקנה שהמעבר הבין תרבותי לישראל מוליד ביצוע מחודש של מה שנתפס כמסורתי בארץ המקור, כשהדינאמיקה המתקיימת סביב התאמת הידע מהעבר למציאות העכשווית מגדירה מחדש את מאפייני הקבוצה. מעבר זה, יש בו בהכרח גם התפכחות וראייה מורכבת יותר של האתוס הציוני אותו הפנימו הנשים בארגנטינה ושל חיי היום-יום המתקיימים לצורך "הגשמתו".

The article seeks to give expression to aspects regarding the daily lives of women who immigrated to Israel from Argentina until the end of the 1970s. For this purpose, perceptions stemming from personal stories and their interpretations are examined focusing on the period of immigration and absorption. The process of migration, even when symbolically regarded as "Aliyah", presents daily challenges. The article examines memoires of feminine experience in their historical and cultural context, that of the country of origin and that of the absorbing country, as well as the women's perception of transformation during the intercultural transition that shaped their lives and that of their families in Israel.
Popular media in Hebrew such as blogs and television broadcasts regarding immigrants from Argentina describe them stereotypically as joyful, meat-craving, Tango lovers, and soccer fans. Thus, the distinction that for some immigrants it is a second migration and most of them are descendants of immigrants who arrived in the Americas, paints a more complex picture of their daily lives while concentrating on the concepts of tradition, memory and identity. Thus, focusing on various aspects of the daily lives of women and their families leads to the conclusion that migration to Israel creates a renewed performance of what is perceived as tradition in the country of origin, redefining the characteristics of the group. This transition additionally involves a more complex view of the Zionist ethos and the everyday life intended to "realize it."

Argentina's Jewish community is mainly an outgrowth of European Jewry. Just as the nation's overall population was constituted by waves of migration from Europe-in particular Spain and Italy-Jews from Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France as well as a few from the Ottoman Empire and Spanish Morocco made the long way across the ocean, too. Researcher Jacqueline Laznow draws on culture, folklore, cuisine, and other sources to examine in this issue of K. Argentine Jewry's integration in the New World-and this with a specific look at the place of women.

À l’instar de la majeure partie de la population argentine, constituée par vagues de migration successives, venues en particulier d’Espagne et d’Italie, la communauté juive argentine est composite. Ses membres sont arrivés de Pologne, d’Ukraine, de Russie, d’Allemagne et de France, ainsi que de l’Empire ottoman et du Maroc espagnol. Tous ont traversé l’océan. En s’appuyant entre autres sur l’examen de leur culture, de leur cuisine, la chercheuse Jacqueline Laznow explore dans cet article le processus d’intégration des immigrés Juifs dans le Nouveau Monde — et cela en portant un regard spécifique sur la place des femmes.

Examining layers of meaning found in personal stories, folktales, memoirs, recipes, and cookbooks collected from interviewees in Argentina and in Israel, this essay interprets the women’s role in Jewish-Argentine identity formation and preservation in connection to processes of forming private and collective memory.
Traditional Jewish foodways generally and gefilte-fish specifically in contrast to traditional Argentine foodways such as meat grilling are analyzed as a symbolicpraxis that strengthens Argentine identity.
