This book provides scholars, students, practitioners, and policy makers with a comprehensive review of the most up-to-date social scientific literature on lethal and nonlethal forms of male-to-female violence during and after separation and divorce. Special attention is devoted to reviewing theoretical perspectives on the topic and the ways in which various technologies are used by men to hurt the women who want to leave them, have begun to emotionally separate, are trying to leave them, in the process of leaving them, or who have left them. This book also provides solutions that cover a broad range of approaches: legal and criminal justice reforms; social services; economic policies; feminist men’s efforts; and new electronic technologies. Throughout the book are the voices of women who have experienced much pain and suffering, as well as the voices of abusive men. These narratives are derived from extensive research done over the past thirty years by the three authors.

There was a burst of creative social scientific investigation into hypermasculine male athletes’ violence against women in the 1980s and 1990s, but this interest has seemed to have dried up. Furthermore, the extant literature on this problem is for the most part atheoretical and devoid of sociological ways of knowing. Thus, the main goal of this paper is to highlight the value of applying a modified male peer support theory of male-to-female violence to explain the linkage between playing professional hockey and online and offline variants of woman abuse.

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1997, Vol 42(10), 948. Reviews the book, Sexual Assault on the College Campus: The Role of Male Peer Support by Martin Schwartz and Walter S. DeKeserdy (see record 1997-97560-000). In this volume, two sociologists who are experts on date rape and violence discuss the high incidence of sexual assault on North American college campuses. They then present theories of male peer-support, which refer to the key role male social groups play in eventual violence toward women. They also analyze cultural and other contributing factors in campus rape, including the roles of alcohol, objectification of women, and narrow conceptions of masculinity. The volume concludes with recommendations for prevention of campus rape. This well-written, timely volume could be used readily as a supplemental work in classes on close relationships, gender, and the family. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)

This chapter argues that a single strategy will not end the atrocities committed both by men continuing their abuse after separation and by those who were not abusive during a relationship but became so after their partners left them. The solutions proposed are legal and criminal justice reforms; social services; economic policies; feminist men's efforts; and new electronic technologies.

This project began as a qualitative investigation into the views of sexual assault detectives. However, in consultation with NIJ Managers, the decision was made to add a quantitative component. Since these two parts are related, but are comprised of vastly different data gathering and analysis schemes, so too this report will be similarly split. The first part of this report covers what was designed to be an exploratory study to explore the attitudes and experiences of active and experienced police rape investigators. The second half of the study, a pencil and paper study of active duty patrol officers (as opposed to investigators), will be reported in the second section of this report. An important supposition behind this study has been that despite an enormous literature on police investigation of sexual assault, very little of this prior study involved speaking to police officers themselves. In particular, part one of the study was designed to ask police detectives what they perc...

This chapter challenges the “common sense” notion that it is essential for a couple to be living apart to be considered separated or divorced. In making this challenge, the authors make the case for a broad, gender-specific definition of separation/divorce violence, one that includes acts of physical violence and psychological means of victimization.

This chapter reviews widely read and cited social scientific theories of separation and divorce violence against women. Explanations covered include the male proprietariness thesis, the challenge thesis, a feminist/male peer support model of separation and divorce sexual assault, a rural masculinity crisis/male peer support model of separation/divorce sexual assault, and the social and economic exclusion model of separation/divorce woman abuse in public housing.

In 1988, Walter S. DeKeseredy announced Male Peer Support (MPS) Theory, which popularized the notion that certain all-male peer groups encourage, justify, and support the abuse of women. In 1993, DeKeseredy and Martin D. Schwartz modified and expanded MPS Theory. Today, after twenty-five years of research, numerous studies from a diverse range of fields and practitioners support the original claim, providing a powerful explanation for the mechanism that underlies much of North America's violence against women. This book provides a history of the theory, traces its development and uses over a quarter century, and offers an update on Internet-generated abuse.

Although there are active debates about the nature and role of masculinities and a rise of new masculinity formations in modern society, feminist analysis of the relationship between sport, masculinities, and violence against women has been somewhat quiescent lately. This article seeks to underline this connection through the use of male peer support theory, which has been expanded in recent years to include messages from women and from within the LGBTQ community, and to recognize the rise in newer masculinity formations and the influence of new technology.

As I close in on the 20th anniversary of the publication of my first piece supporting feminist theory, I occasionally ruminate on a problem close to the hearts of most humanist sociologists: how nice it would be if our practice completely reflected our theoretical positions. On the theory side, at any rate, I have worked for the past decade on a variety of problems relating to violence against women, and particularly the problems that feminist theory and research has caused for criminal law and legal mechanisms. Pornography, which many (including myself) perceive as a form of violence against women intimately tied to most if not all other forms, is a most difficult area to discuss today as charges and countercharges swirl about the socialist and feminist communities. As a male, it seems almost presumptuous to enter the fray. And yet, there is a real need for parties not personally and intimately tied to the political battles to attempt to sort out the issues and concerns involved. With some trepidation, I sally forth, not only for this reason, but also because, as is made clear in the article, I consider the issue of pornography an important men's issue also.

Left realism has generated enormous interest and controversy in critical criminology over the past several years both in North America and in the United Kingdom. While there are important similarities between the writings from these countries, there are also some deep differences and divisions. This article provides some explication of these similarities and differences within a critical context.

Backlash critics of campus rape research have claimed that researchers exaggerate their figures by labeling as rape victims those women who experience bad dates. Although researchers have compared stranger with acquaintance rape victims, they have not compared women raped while too drunk to resist and those raped by force. This study of 65 rape victims (in a sample of 388 college seniors) found no evidence for critics' claims. Women raped by intoxication are not less emotionally affected and do not blame themselves more. Most women did not classify their experiences as rape, although all were victims under criminal law. This lack of recognition is what causes hidden victims, who do not report or seek help.

There are numerous methodological pitfalls in the use of survey data to study violence against women. This article reviews some of the major problems, including definitional problems, operationalization of concepts, recall bias, underreporting, question order, external validity, and the sex and ethnicity of interviewers. Recommendations for improving methodology are made, and some of the latest developments in the field are reviewed. It is argued that research ethics are particularly difficult and important in this field of study, not only for the potential emotional trauma to the respondents, but also for the potential for actual revictimization.

Despite these severe limitations, a total of 20 books were located, including works in criminology, deviance and a few readers. This mind-boggling total precluded examining some excellent books which had the misfortune of being published in 1977, or of seeking out any publishers who had not yet discovered this particular potential sale. Nor did it include the related veritable sub-gold mine of juvenile delinquency books and readers.
