This paper describes the collection and annotation of comparable multimodal corpora for Nordic languages in a project involving research groups from Denmark, Estonia, Finland and Sweden. The goal of the project is to provide annotated multimodal resources to study communicative phenomena, such as feedback, turn-taking and sequencing in the languages involved in the project and to compare these phenomena. Studies so far include verbal expressions, head movements and facial expressions related to feedback.

The aim of this study is to investigate the ability of aphasics to perform specific semantic operations in a test. A test with two main parts, containing operations on semantic role relations and operations concerning type abstraction and specification, was given to a group of nine aphasics and a group of matched controls. The results are interpreted in relation to theories of semantic relations (Fillmore 1968, Allwood 1989), as well as theoretical assumptions concerning "abstraction", "contextualization", "automatic" versus "controlled" processing and "inhibition" versus "disinhibition".

ABSTRACT Background: Communication partner training (CPT) is a widely recognized approach in aphasia; yet, the critical ingredients that contribute to successful CPT remain unclear. Further scrutiny of theoretical constructs, rationales, approaches, and outcomes is needed in order to further the development of CPT and ensure effective and efficient practices. Aims: The objective of this introduction is to describe the rationale and create a context for the papers in this special issue on CPT in aphasia. Main Contribution: This introduction defines CPT, briefly describes significant research and approaches to CPT in aphasia, and explains how the concepts of complexity, alignment, and enrichment might expand our understanding of CPT and contribute to innovative research and practice in the area. Conclusions: This introduction and special issue expands our understanding of CPT and challenges clinicians and researchers to consider additional perspectives on CPT. By considering additional perspectives a greater appreciation of the critical elements of CPT will be possible.

Communication participation in adolescents with acquired brain injuries (ABI) has received limited attention. The aim of the present study was to investigate the views of the adolescents themselves (N = 8), in comparison to parent evaluations (N = 11) of daily communication, using the Communicative Effectiveness Index in combination with individual interviews. Two frameworks for analyses, Activity based Communication Analyses and the distributed cognition approach, identified three main areas of interest: Situations where communication difficulties occur, Coping behaviours used by participants to manage communication difficulties, and, Causes of the communication difficulties. An overall high agreement between the adolescent and parent assessments was shown. However, complex communicative situations more frequently received lower scores in the parent ratings. The results of the study point to the usability of a systematic comparison of the shared points of views on communication after ABI in adolescence, to increase knowledge about the participation perspective in real life communication.

Comparison of languages and linguistic data is essential if progress in our understanding of the nature of spoken languages is to be made. We understand phenomena better through comparison and contrast. This paper discusses problems that arise in trying to transfer a spoken language corpus transcribed and formatted according to one standard into the standard and format of another corpus. The problems that arise are related both to the differences that exist between the standards of the corpora and to human errors leading to lack of reliability in creating the transcriptions. Although the discussion is based on transfer and transliteration between two specific corpora (the Danish BySoc, BySociolingvistisk Korpus, and the Swedish GSLC, Göteborg Spoken Language Corpus), we believe that the discussion in the article documents and highlights problems of a general kind which have to be faced whenever spoken language corpora of different formats are to be compared.

This paper contains an analysis of features of gesture types that are produced before or simultaneously with speech (mainly. nouns and verbs) and in relation to own communication management (choice and change). The types of gestures discussed are arm-hand gestures, head movements and gaze. The analysis is then discussed in relation to two selected social activities, where virtual agents (ECAs) are or can be used. Gesture types and features with different functions are briefly suggested for each of the two activities and also ...

Ett mycket större antal människor tillbringar idag en mycket större del av sitt liv inom samhälleligt organiserat lärande än för hundra eller tom femtio år sedan. 1955 gick t ex 2% av alla ungdomar i Sverige vidare till universitet. Idag gör 40% det. Detta innebär att en stor del av befolkningen tillbringar 15-16 år eller ännu mer av sitt liv och i stort sett hela sin ungdom inom samhälleligt organiserat lärande. Hur detta lärande är organiserat är därför väsentligt.

The paper compares how feedback is expressed via speech and head movements in comparable corpora of first encounters in three Nordic languages: Danish, Finnish and Swedish. The three corpora have been collected following common guidelines, and they have been annotated according to the same scheme in the NOMCO project. The results of the comparison show that in this data the most frequent feedback-related head movement is Nod in all three languages. Two types of Nods were distinguished in all corpora: ...

1. Aim In this study we want to investigate the role of lexical repetitions (ie" inter-speaker" repetitions) in conversation between second language learners and target language speakers. our interest mainly focuses on how lexical repetitions can potentially be part of the language acquisition process. For example, we want to find out whether language learners use lexical repetitions more than native language speakers in similar types of conversation and if target language speakers use more lexical repetitions when talking to language ...

The terms word replacement and word substitution will in the following be used synonymously to cover all word finding problems where one or several words have replaced a word that the aphasic cannot find (we have not studied replacements of target phrases). These terms do not imply any interpretation of what processes cause the replacement, ie if it is an" error"(wrong choice, lack of inhibition of alternatives etc) or a" strategy"(a goal directed procedure which in this case could

Human communication involves multiple levels of organization involving physical, biological, psychological and socio-cultural properties. As a basis, we assume that there are at least two (human) biological organisms in a physical environment causally influencing each other, through manipulation of their shared physical environment. Such causal influence might to some extent be innately given, so that there are probably aspects of communication that function independently of awareness and intentional control of the ...

This document describes the Göteborg Transcription Standard (GTS) 1, and consists of two parts, one cross-linguistic part called GTSG (GTS General), and one language specific part called Modified Standard Orthography (MSO). MSO provides guidelines and specifics on how to modify (Swedish) standard orthography to accomodate conventionalized variation in Swedish spoken language. GTS allows the use of the two parts GTSG and MSO separately. GTSG is in facts compatible not only with MSO but also with the other orthographical ...

Les données de ce corpus proviennent de différentes activités sociales et servent de support à différentes analyses (fréquence des mots, statistiques sur les parties du discours) et à différents codages (codage fonctionnel, grammatical, sémantique) effectués à l'aide d'outils informatiques développés dans cette perspective

This study investigates recurring patterns of gesturing during episodes of word search and own communication management, i.e. choice and change operations in speech. Two databases of word search episodes, one of person with aphasia and one of persons without aphasia, each containing 100 episodes, were analyzed. An extensive set of recurrent features of gesture and meaning connections was identified. In general, the same recurrent features were found for persons with and without aphasia. The recurrent gesture patterns can be used for educating health personnel and families of persons with aphasia in order to enhance understanding or aphasic gesturing.

Résumé/Abstract This study studies how gestures (here defined in a wide sense, including all body movements which have a communicative function) are used for Own Communication Management (OCM), an interesting and not completely well described part of the language system. OCM concerns how a speaker continuously manages the planning and execution of his/her own communication and is a basic function in face-to-face interaction. It has two main functions, ie" choice" and" change".

Abstract: This paper describes work on spoken language at the Department of Linguistics Göteborg University. First, we describe what recordings are contained in the Spoken Language Corpus of Swedish at Göteborg University. Secondly, we describe the standard of transcription (MSO) which is used in the transcriptions. Thirdly, we describe computer tools that have been developed to support transcription, coding and analysis. Fourthly, we describe some types of quantitative and qualitative analysis that have been done.
