This paper examines the experience of business incubation as an innovative developmental instrument based on the recent experience of the South American countries of Brazil and Chile and the Caribbean island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. A qualitative research method was adopted involving a review of published reports, journal articles and relevant case studies; and face-to-face semi-structured interviews with incubator managerial staff. The major findings are that there are great similarities among the incubators studied in terms of their links to universities, services offered, and funding challenges, but there is growing acceptance of incubation as a potentially valid tool for promoting business development and innovation although most incubators are at the early stage. The paper is original because the case study application to incubation in Trinidad and Tobago is new with only one related article published, and this study therefore adds value to the body of research because bu...

Leadership is an area of study that dates back several decades with the emphasis placed on individual leaders particularly those in political and military fields. With the evolution of the practice of leadership and its application to organizations, the concept of team leadership gained attention. The main aim of the article is to outline a model for promoting team leadership in organizations with special emphasis on developing and emerging countries. A two stage qualitative research methodology was adopted involving collection and analysis of secondary published data for the purpose of identifying the main concepts and themes relating to leadership, followed by the integration of the most relevant concepts into the design of a team leadership model. The article is valuable as the creation of models to guide the leadership of teams are sparse especially with applications to developing-country contexts. There are implications for the management of organizations in most jurisdictions, but particularly countries where modern leadership practices lag behind best practices.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the key issues involved in the process of mergers and acquisitions of companies and to explore the experience in a small developing country. The methodological approach adopted is largely qualitative with data collected on mergers and acquisitions from relevant published journals, specialist papers, technical reports with raw statistics, stock exchange information obtained online, and printed media announcements. The findings revealed that the merger and acquisition process is of varying complexity depending on the type of firms involved, the business environment, and the cultural context. In developing countries where stock exchanges are not vibrant, merger activity requires stimulation through special incentives and this situation is particularly applicable to small countries. The value of the paper lies in the fact that very few studies were completed on small developing countries and no recent study exists on Trinidad and Tobago the most d...

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the theories, concepts and issues involved in the area of corporate finance and the implications for emerging economies. A secondary research approach was adopted based on a review of published texts, journals, and technical reports. The results of the study demonstrate that based on the indicators of capital market development, the high-income developing country of Trinidad and Tobago used as a case study, lags behind in critical areas of development of its capital market and, along with related developing countries, can benefit from the fundamental principles involved in the practice of corporate finance. The practical implications of the study are the potential use by students in tertiary level institutions engaged in MBA or financial management studies, participants pursuing professional qualifications in accounting and finance, employees in financial institutions, and general stakeholders seeking to invest funds. The value ...

The article reviews the literature in the field of academic journal publishing highlighting the phenomenon of the recent entry of Internet-driven open access journals into a field dominated by the traditional subscription journals. The article has a twofold purpose of gaining an understanding of the main features and characteristics of the open access journal system through a review of the literature; and assessing the extent of adoption of open access by researchers in the management discipline through a review of the management publications by the University of the West Indies (UWI) researchers. A sequential exploratory strategy of two phases was used. The first phase focused on the collection of secondary data on journal publishing and the second involved reviewing the publishing record of The UWI with particular reference to management research. The main finding is that open access was not fully embraced as a publishing outlet because of academic resistance derived from question...

The concepts of innovation and innovation management were usually associated with large firms in developed countries that focused on product manufacturing. More recently, researchers turned to studies of innovation in services and the relevance to small firms in developing countries. This paper explores the relevance and applicability of the concept of innovation management to small firms, particularly in the field of professional services, in the context of a developing state. A qualitative research method was employed involving collection and analysis of published articles, reports, and leading texts on the subject of innovation management. The main finding is that innovation management is highly relevant to small firms especially those that operate in the services sector. The value of the paper lies in the fact that innovation management and value chain innovation were not previously investigated in small professional services firms in the Caribbean, and, therefore, the paper con...

This study examines the progress of the two major universities in the Caribbean country of Trinidad and Tobago towards the transition to entrepreneurial universities through incorporating the core components of designing and delivering entrepreneurship education programmes, establishing effective university-led business incubators and the building of university–industry–government collaboration. The theoretical construct of the Triple Helix interrelationships and the development stages framework provide the basis for analysing the progress of the universities towards achieving their development mission. The general conclusion is that progress towards building an effective university-centred entrepreneurial ecosystem has been relatively slow and needs to be accelerated through more proactive leadership and greater involvement of internal and external stakeholders.

Entrepreneurship courses are now a feature of the curricula of many tertiary-level business schools. While there is a growing body of research on the subject of entrepreneurship education and learning, studies of the executive master of business administration (EMBA) are relatively sparse. This article offers an example of an entrepreneurship course specifically tailored to the more mature and experienced EMBA participants. The curriculum offered in this article is the result of 25 years of teaching, testing and refining of content and learning approaches in a university setting. The argument is that the course, as currently designed, can serve as a template for courses to be conducted in business schools located in similar cultural contexts and economic environments.

This article proposes a process framework for developing and managing visitor attractions (VA) in small island developing states with Trinidad and Tobago, a two-island state in the Caribbean, as the case study. An extensive literature review was conducted, supported by field observations, individual depth interviews, and small and large focus group meetings. The process framework identified four sets of processes: national policy formulation and legislation; inventory, classification, evaluation, and ranking of VA; general operations management involving project management activities; and site specific activities of development, operations, and maintenance. The value of the framework lies in the fact that no similar framework applicable to small islands was covered in the literature and validation was obtained from a panel of experts and a cross section of tourism stakeholders in Tobago.

The subject of female entrepreneurship is rapidly gaining attention in emerging countries because of the claims of researchers that female entrepreneurs can make a significant contribution to economic and business development. The purpose of this paper is to examine the experience of female entrepreneurship in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region to extract the lessons learnt and to provide insights into the formulation of policies and recommendations to guide the development of female entrepreneurship. The research methodology employed for this paper is essentially a qualitative research design based on review and analyses of secondary data on female entrepreneurship sources from journal articles, reports prepared by professional firms, studies of entrepreneurship conducted by research organizations, and statistical data derived from surveys conducted by reputable organizations. The main finding is that female entrepreneurship is relatively vibrant in LAC as a whole but...

The purpose of this paper is the formulation of a framework for assessing development change in small developing countries modified for application to small islands, and further, to propose a development process to be used alongside the framework. The methodology utilized in the case study involved research of official published documents, analysis of relevant statistical data, and application of Landsat imagery for producing a land cover map. The main finding is that the existing assessment framework developed by the European Environmental Agency does not fully fit the conditions in small islands and has to be modified for implementation which is better used in combination with a development process that provides a better fit for purpose. The modified framework and the detailing of a new development process presented in this paper are original in the suggested applications and will be valuable to the agencies that carry the responsibility for undertaking environmental and developme...

The purpose of this paper is to compare the Executive MBA programs offered in Trinidad and Tobago as a guide to executives seeking to pursue a graduate business degree. The methodology employed was research of the published prospectuses from the business schools that offer an executive degree, interviews with program coordinators to fill information gaps, and preparation of a matrix based on key decision criteria for comparative purposes. The main finding is that there are significant differences between the two main providers in terms of length of program, entry requirements, assessment methods, and program cost which create a highly competitive environment with strategic implications for the local graduate business school. The value of this research is that it is pioneering work in the Caribbean context which will serve as a guide to business executives, sponsors, and governmental agencies in participating in and supporting EMBA programs.

The study of individual creativity is well established in the fields of psychology and sociology but, more recently, management studies focused on the aspects of team and organization creativity in the workplace as part of a triad of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship. This paper employed a tri-level component analysis of individual, team, and organizational creativity as steps towards development of the creative sustainable organization. The main aim of the paper is to identify and explore the key issues and considerations involved in fostering creativity in the workplace as a guide to organization managers whose objective is organizational sustainability. The research process involved secondary research of published journals and reputable texts relevant to the field of creativity studies, and extrapolation of the author’s experience in teaching creativity at the MBA level and in leading organizations. The main finding is that business and organization leaders must take f...

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of clustering and mapping of tourism assets as an appropriate development strategy applied to the case of a small island developing state, and to detail the first requirements of the cluster process. The research approach was a qualitative method based on study of secondary and primary sources, review of relevant case studies, and development of an applied case study. The major finding is that the adoption of a tourism cluster strategy must begin with identification and classification of the elements required for an operational cluster, in accordance with international best practice and before actual cluster maps can be prepared. The practical implication of this study is that it is immediately germane to a cluster mapping exercise for the small island of Trinidad and Tobago. This paper is original because no published research is available on the development of tourism clusters in Trinidad and Tobago and will be valuable in info...

The globalization of higher business education supported by the growth of transnational educational institutions is now a feature of the developing countries of the Caribbean region. This article examines the situation of Guyana, where the recent discovery of hydrocarbon resources has created expectations of an economic transformation that will generate a demand for trained personnel to manage the transition: Master of Business Administration (MBA) graduates are expected to contribute significantly in this regard. In the higher education system in Guyana, MBA graduates are produced mainly by the regional university and an Australian transnational institution. This study gathered information on the guiding factors in the choice of MBA through a survey of current students and recent graduates of the two institutions. A comparative analysis of the competing programmes was also undertaken to provide greater insights into their capacities for generating the human resource output necessar...

The main finding is that open access was not fully embraced as a publishing outlet because of academic resistance derived from questions of acceptability, and the existence of a system that assigns greater recognition to the established subscription journals. The article concludes that open access journals have grown in respectability and quality and are a good option for publishing management research by authors located in developing regions, provided the operational characteristics of this mode of publishing are understood and caution in journal selection is exercised.

This article explores the concept of entrepreneurial ecosystems and its complementary parts of entrepreneurial universities, entrepreneurship education, university business incubators, and university-enterprise-government-civil society collaboration, all in the context of the promise of stimulating economic development, generating employment, and creating innovative ventures whether in technological or service businesses. These issues are discussed in an attempt to provide greater understanding of the fragmented concepts from theoretical and practice viewpoints. An empirical investigation of a university business school is conducted to measure its progress as the hub of an effective entrepreneurial ecosystem. An insider action research perspective is adopted to assess the stage of development of the ecosystem elements in pursuit of the achievement of the entrepreneurial ideal. Emphasis is placed on the need to develop strong collaboration among key stakeholders for achieving success in building an effective entrepreneurial ecosystem based on a quadruple helix system.

The value of this paper is that it explores and presents data on an area of study which is considered esoteric and largely ignored in the formal literature on small developing states, particularly the island-states of the Caribbean. Its value further lies in its contribution to the understanding of the field of corporate finance and related issues and identification of implications for developing economies. The research is limited to the extent that only secondary data sources were explored and insights from practitioners through interviews were not obtained thus pointing to scope for future research.
