Even when highly effective antibiotic therapy is provided to patients, death and long-term disabilities are common outcomes of acute bacterial meningitis (BM) in developing countries. The aim of this study was to analyze how the outcome of disease was related to the initial antimicrobial therapy used to treat the patients. We analyzed 277 children younger than 16 years of age who were treated for BM in the Hospital of Infectious Diseases in Prishtina, Kosova, over a six-year period. Of the 277 children treated for BM, 36.1% of cases were given initial antimicrobial therapy with one antibiotic, 63.2% of cases received two antibiotics and 0.7% of the cases received three antibiotics. Of the 60 patients who had neurologic complications (NC), 50 (28.6%) were treated with two antibiotics, 9 (9%) received one antibiotic and 1 patient was treated with three antibiotics. The antibiotics used most often as monotherapy were penicillin G (63 cases) and ceftriaxone (33 cases). The incidence of ...

Aim: The purpose of the study was to analyze the largest outbreak of viral meningitis in Kosovo in the past 50 years. Methods: This was a retrospective chart review of 1003 patients presenting with viral meningitis in Kosovo in 2006. An epidemic outbreak with a total of 1003 patients in a population of approximately two million (50 cases per 100.000 population) occurred between July and October 2006 with the peak incidence in August (44%). Results: Duration of symptoms prior to admission was 1.68±1.22 days and most of the patients presented a sudden onset of headache (93%), fever (92%) and vomiting (86.5%). Men (66%) dominated with a statistically significant difference compared to women (P<0.01). Also, patients coming from rural areas (66%) dominated with a statistically significant difference compared to patients coming from urban settings (P<0.01). The most affected population groups were children aged 5-9 years (42.5%). Meningeal signs were positive in 97% of the cases and...

Brucellosis is one of the most common zoonotic infections in the world with a high percentage of chronic forms, which respectively negatively affects the economic component of health systems in countries with high prevalence of brucellosis. The purpose of our study was to determine the clinical, epidemiological and laboratory features of acute brucellosis in the Republic of Azerbaijan. We were screened 178 patients with acute brucellosis who applied for medical services at the Baku Clinic and the Central Clinical Hospital in Baku. Specific methods of the study were conducted by ELISA with the detection of IgM and IgG. Statistical processing the results of the study was performed using the programs “SPSS 20.0”, “STATISTICA 6.0”. Among brucellosis patients, men (75.00%) of the young age (65.00%) who live in rural areas prevail. It was found that in 7.5 times more acute brucellosis was observed among women aged 40–49 years (p<0.05), whereas in the group under 19 years of age, brucel...
