This article uses 21 in-depth interviews with viewers of the British soap opera EastEnders to investigate the extent to which it can be described, in particular through its handling of social issues, as a site of cultural citizenship and, via the concept of public service, of resistance to the current neoliberal hegemony. The article’s analysis of viewers’ talk confirms previous claims that EastEnders mobilises a nostalgic sense of community with which viewers identify, and goes on to argue that this is in fact a cultural expression of a social-democratic worldview which has lost its once-hegemonic position. Following a comparison of the British and the highly commercialised Spanish media ecosystems and their corresponding popular public spheres, the article concludes that a commitment to public service ideals contributes to sustaining spaces which, like EastEnders, can work as counter-hegemonic sites to the cultural logic of late capitalism.

Chapters of this book show examples in which the news media across a range of national and international locales appear to have constructed narratives in the run-up to the 2016 EU referendum and shortly following the Brexit vote. This concluding chapter aims to examine how the media went about constructing Brexit in relation to international political communication theories that address the domestication/heterogeneity and globalization/homogeneity of news content. It does this by comparing how the national and international media cases reported the road to Brexit in 2016. The chapter concludes that national and international media representations of Brexit were mixed; and that the international political communication of Brexit included competing flows of globalized and domesticated news content.

This thesis offers a detailed, study of all the works of Eugenio de Castro written between 1889 and 1896. I have concentrated on the development of the themes of passion and pessimism during the period in question, and on the debt of these works to the Symbolist poetry and drama of France. Chapter One deals with Oaristos (1890), the first book which clearly reveals the mark of contemporary French literature on the poetry of Eugenio de Castro. In Chapter Two I examine Horas (1891) in terms of a sudden upsurge of interest in religious symbolism among certain writers in France at the time. Chapter Three is divided into two parts. The first of these deals with an event in Eugenio de Castro's life which would provide the starting-point for all the remaining poetry of the period under examinations the breaking, in 1892, of his engagement with Helena Bordalo Pinheiro. In the second part I discuss those poems from Silva (1894) written in 1891 and 1892. Chapter Four is likewise divided i...

This corpus-based keyword analysis investigates the letters to the shareholders from two commercial banks, Bank of America and Citigroup, over a 3-year period from 2008, 2009, and 2010. The letters were compiled to facilitate a diachronic analysis, an assessment of language change over a specific period, of profit/loss reporting from two prominent financial institutions over a time period in which the recession commenced, peaked, and concluded. To conduct the analysis on the node texts, two sets of reference corpora were compiled. One reference corpus set consists of the letters to shareholders from eight consistently high-performing corporations not within the commercial banking industry for each of the 3 years; the other reference corpus set consists of the letters from the 10 banking institutions that also appeared in the Fortune 500 listings for the 3-year period. The corpus-based analysis revealed that in years of low performance companies create messages that assert a vision and forward a strategy for ensuring future success while also establishing distance between management and past failures. In contrast, when companies perform well, the keyword lists display a clear tendency of the company/author to accept praise and attribute success to actions of management.

The amount of coverage of the 2016 EU referendum in the Spanish media was remarkable. This is not surprising as Brexit was seen as a threat to a European project celebrated for having delivered political, social and economic benefits to Spain in consonance with the values of the European Enlightenment of universal reality-based rationality. However, one of the most salient factors in the Spanish media coverage is related to the internal political life of the country, and, as a result, there was no homogeneous Spanish view. Instead, a range of ideologically grounded interpretations was produced in which the independence of Catalonia featured as highly as the future of the European Union.

The aim of this article is to investigate the competing discourses of Iran currently circulating in British society, and their influence on the tourist destination image of that country. A mixed-methods approach was adopted within a social constructionist perspective: this consisted of a Foucauldian discourse analysis of news reports in a range of British broadsheet newspapers, interviews with tourists who had visited Iran, and analysis of travel blogs written by a second group of tourists who had also previously visited the country. The findings show that the leading British broadsheets examined exclusively circulate an extremely negative discourse of Iran-as-Polity, originating in US and mediated by the British political field, whose main components are nuclear issues, danger, hostility and terrorism. Though UK tourists to the country are often drawn there initially by a largely Orientalist discourse of Iran-as-Persia, i.e. as a site of historical monuments, during and post visit,...

The Catalan Journal of Communication & Cultural Studies (CJCS) had its genesis in casual conversations among the members of the Department of Communication Studies at the Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona during the years 2007 and 2008. We were certainly excited about the idea of publishing a quality academic journal, yet it was difficult to find answers to questions such as: why should we launch a new journal? Would this journal meet with any interest in our field? What would it add to the already existing publications? Would any publisher be interested in the Catalan cultural field? Among all these uncertainties the only thing that was quite clear to us was that times had changed: communication and cultural studies within the Catalan context was now a richer reality than five years before; the rules of the university system were now demanding higher levels of quality in their evaluation of scholarship; and the need to internationalize academic output was more pressing than ever. But how could we bring this project to fruition? Around that time we received a communication from Intellect looking for new journal proposals. Without thinking twice, we looked for national and international alliances, we worked out the focus and scope of the journal and we began to write up the project. Two decisions were already taken: it must be a blind peer-reviewed journal following the standard academic practice regarding the selection of articles for inclusion, and it must be an English-language publication. The reason for these conditions was that no other completely blind peer-reviewed journal produced with the backing of a Catalan academic institution such as Rovira i Virgili University was available in English in the field of communication and cultural studies. We submitted the project to Intellect’s 2009 call for journals and, a few weeks later, we received a positive reply from the publishers. This, in our view, proves two things: on the one hand, Intellect’s commitment to seeking out and fostering new ideas and niches in the academic field and, on the other, of the growing stature and confidence in Catalan culture and society in the international sphere. We had the feeling that scholarship in the cultural and social disciplines in Catalonia had been too inward looking for too long, and the time had come to raise our heads and look around us. But let us explain what CJCS is about, and what are we proposing with the journal.

It is in the explanation of conflicts that narratives of confrontation are most clearly deployed. In the definition of the problems, in the roles embodied by the different subjects, in the lexical choices made when referring to territories or symbolic objects, we establish differences in terms of how such confrontations are (to be) understood. These narratives are articulated through structures which work to construct the origin of the problem, the solution, the victim or aggressor and so on. Applying a narratological analysis, the aim of this article is to offer a set of key elements for understanding news constructions of the — essentially political — conflict among nations and regions within Spain. Starting from a study of five cases and a comparison of ten TV news items from both the Spanish (TVE) and the Catalan (TVC) public-service channels concerning recent conflicts, the authors attempt to throw light on the ways in which different and divergent conceptions of the same set o...

Putting a Face on It analyses and discusses how subjectivity and exposure of individuals now affect most journalistic topics and genres: from politics to sports journalism, from science journalism to journalism about terrorism. Individual exposure and subjectivity affect news and features, photos and front pages, and are at the core of an increasing dialogue with digital media users. One aim of this book is therefore to present some of this variation. Another is to contribute to the discourse about the present state of journalism and where it is heading.

Putting a Face on It will appeal to researchers, teachers, students, writers, journalists and other media-interested readers.
