The study area is the coastal stretch, along the coast of Posillipo, in the Bay of Naples, from the Marechiaro village to the Trentaremi Bay into the Marine Protected Area (MPA) “Gaiola Underwater Park” (D.I. 7/8/2002). The interaction between elements of natural erosion, bradyseismic movements and massive anthropic overhaul of tuff sides, happened in different historical periods, is what most characterizes the current coastal geomorphology of the area. As part of a project aimed to study and exploitation of natural and historical-archaeological resources of the MPA that the Centro Studi Interdisciplinari Gaiola onlus is carrying out in agreement with the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Napoli e Caserta (MPA manager), in this work has been concentrated on the analysis of many coastal caves in the area. After a first phase of census and relief map showing caves, the second phase was devoted to geo-archaeologycal analysis of caves found most interesting and their ecological and biological characterization.
