The so-called Potinklumpen, which was found in the city zone of Zurich in 1890, consists of about 17.200 to 18.000 late Latène potin coins which are melted together. Only two types of coins could be identified: potin coins of the Zurich type and of the «Sequani» type (group A). The spectrum of the types shows close parallels to that of the Late Latène settlement on the nearby Üetliberg. Therefore the «Potinklumpen» can be dated to around 100 B.C. Within the Turicum-project of the University of Bern, which is sponsered by the Swiss National Science Foundation, a number of scientific surveys could be realized in co-operation with the Swiss National Museum. They provide new knowledge concerning the composition, the reconstruction of the melting-process and the chronology. Several possibilities for interpretation are discussed on the ba sis of the reconstructed melting-process as well as on comparable finds.

In 2022 five Celtic electron staters were found on the Adlerberg near Pratteln, Canton Basel-Landschaft (Switzerland). Numerous ancient coins have already been discovered here in recent years. Furthermore, a new site on the banks of the Rhine near Muttenz, Canton Basel-Landschaft (Switzerland), is presented, which yielded similar coins to the large Late Latène settlement of Basel-Gasfabrik not far away (stater of wheel type, quinarii of Kaletedou type, potin coins of grosse tête type).

During an archaeologial survey on the Adlerberg near Pratteln (BL), Switzerland, in 2020 a Celtic quinarius of Kaletedou-Sula type was found. These rare coins are considered to be the model for the whole complex of Kaletedou coinage with all its variations and extensive geographical distribution. The new find provided the occasion to compile all known variants of the Kaletedou-Sula type: until now only 18 coins of three variants are known to researchers. They all were minted by just three dies for each side. Therefore the question arose whether all Kaletedou quinarii have the Kaletedou-Sula type as a common model. Or do we have to expect parallel lines of development?

A dynamic model involving both earlier and later settlement centres was previously developed for the oppidum on the Enge peninsula. Although relatively small in number, coins played an important role in our understanding of the overall picture. Surveying carried out between 2016 and 2018 yielded a significant number of Celtic coins suggesting a re-evaluation of the La Tène period coin sequences from various sites on the Enge peninsula. Based on these new finds, some hitherto little-known aspects could provide a stimulus for further research. However, the coins have not provided any reasons to discard the settlement model developed previously. Numerous Roman coins also came to light, though these can only be briefly dealt with here.
Benché i rinvenimenti monetali

English: During excavations near Merklingen (Alb-Donau-Kreis) in 2014, a small late Iron Age hoard consisting of 42 silver coins came to light. The coins were not found in situ but were scattered over a larger area and discovered by metal detecting. This may be due to earlier construction works and ploughing.
The homogeneous composition of the hoard shows close relations to the coins of the oppidum of Altenburg, situated in a meander of the Rhine at the German-Swiss border: It consists of two quinarii of the Kaletedou and one of the Arverni type, two unidentifiable quinarii and, above all 37 quinarii of the bushel type (88,1%).
The hoard was deposited in the early stage of LT D2a, roughly between 80 and 60 BC. From this period, we know of only a few clearly datable finds from the southern part of Baden-Wurttemberg. Some scholars have connected this negative record with the migration of the Helvetii and the abandonment of their lands ("Helvetiereinöde") as described by the ancient writer Ptolemy. Against this background, questions arise on the hoard’s original owner(s) and how the hoard finally reached its place of deposition.

This edited collection analyses the phenomenon of coin use for religious and ritual purposes in different cultures and across different periods of time. It proposes an engagement with the theory and interpretation of the ‘material turn’ with numismatic evidence, and an evidence-based series of discussions to offer a fuller, richer and fresh account of coin use in ritual contexts. No extensive publication has previously foregrounded coins in such a model, despite the fact that coins constitute an integrated part of the material culture of most societies today and of many in the past. Here, interdisciplinary discussions are organised around three themes: coin deposit and ritual practice, the coin as economic object and divine mediator, and the value and meaning of coin offering. Although focusing on the medieval period in Western Europe, the book includes instructive cases from the Roman period until today. The collection brings together well-established and emerging scholars from archaeology, art history, ethnology, history and numismatics, and great weight is given to material evidence which can complement and contradict the scarce written sources.

Jahrhunderts v. Chr. in Gebrauch.

No settlement finds from the earlier Late Latène period are known from the urban area of Zurich. Nevertheless, some finds from the 19th century indicate human activity on the site at that time. A large find of Celtic potin coins from the Bahnhofstrasse as well as iron ingots and coins from the Limmat are clear indicators of this. An associated settlement of the same period can be located on the nearby Üetliberg.

Ludwigshafen in Rheinland-Pfalz.
