Several hundred of inscriptions and inscribed fragments (including several copies of some inscriptions) on different materials have been found during the excavations at Persepolis from the 1930s to today. One of the notable findings is the second copy of the Babylonian version of XPf, which was once a stone tablet like those of Xerxes found in the 1930s at Persepolis (and later in other sites like Pasargadae). Later, it was reshaped and reused as a column torus in the Southern Quarter (Barzan-e Jonubi) of Persepolis. Such a peculiarity, i.e., the unique archaeological context and the secondary use of the tablet, has made the inscription a curious case in discussions regarding the secondary use and the afterlife of the Achaemenid royal inscriptions. It was studied and published in the 1970s for the first time and then moved to the archive of the Persepolis Museum, where it was kept for decades. Since then, few researchers have paid attention to such a peculiar inscription. The present article aims to review the research background and physical features of the inscription, and this article will also study the inscription’s content.

With the development of cuneiform studies and the finding of more textual evidence from the cuneiform archives in the west Asia, the evidence of the Indo-Iranian presence in the second millennium BC in the region becomes clearer. Among the critical documents published by the researchers, one can mention the treaty between the Hittite king Šuppiluliuma and the Mittani prince Šattiwazza (CTH 51 and CTH 52) from the middle of the 14th century BC. The treaty was found during the excavations at Hattuša, the capital city of Hittites (now Boğazkale), and contains significant historical accounts regarding the political developments between Hittite and Mittani kingdoms, which led to Šuppiluliumas expedition in the western territories of Mittani kingdom and supporting Šattiwazza to reach the Mittani throne. Apart from the historical importance of the treaty, attestations of the Indo-Aryan gods Mitra, Varuṇa, Nāsatyas and Indra and throne names like Šattiwazza and Artatama have made the treaty significant textual evidence of the presence of the Indo-Aryans and their gods in the middle of the second millennium BC in west Asia. The treaty also plays a significant role in the field of Iranian studies. Since there is no complete Persian translation of the treaty, I have decided to translate the whole text of CTH 51 (based on the Akkadian version) into Persian and briefly discuss historical and linguistic issues concerning the treaty.

Among hundreds of inscribed fragments at the reserves of the Persepolis Museum, there is a stone fragment bearing Elamite signs on both sides. A similar fragment was found in 1936 during the Oriental Institute excavations led by E. F. Schmidt (1935-1939) at the Treasury building on Persepolis Terrace. The current article discusses the content of the two fragments in Chicago and Persepolis and features of their signs, in connection with other late Achaemenid royal inscriptions from Susa and Persepolis.

As the authors of the first article about DNf (Delshad and Doroodi) released the news regarding the discovery of DNf (on the 29th of January 2019), they noticed that some people, including (Khadijeh Tootoonchi and Ebrahim Roostaei Farsi), declared that they have already discovered DNf, but neither share their pictures with other researchers nor announce it. Among them, E. Roostaei Farsi claimed that he managed to take some photographs of the inscription and prepare a draft of textual analysis of the inscription with A. Arfaei in Tehran. He further claimed that he wanted to present his article at “The First International Historical-Cultural Conference of Southern Iran (Historical Fars)” in December 2017. The conference organizers did not allow him to present his article on DNf. Still, they promised him to publish it in the proceedings of the conference. As a result, nobody except for E. Roostaei Farsi, A. Arfaei, and one of the conference organizers (M. Dehghani) knew about this issue until the official announcement of DNf on the 29th of January 2019 by Delshad and Doroodi. Because there is no single proving document that can support such a claim (i.e., the existence of a submitted article about DNf before the official announcement of its finding), and the article written by E. Roostaei Farsi and A. Arfaei was published three months after the first publication of DNf in March 2019, the author has decided to write a review of the article to discuss its mistakes and shortcomings that can influence such a claim regarding the existence of research on DNf at least two years before the official announcement of its finding by Delshad and Doroodi.

Among the Achaemenid inscriptions, DPg has been the topic of several studies since the very beginning of cuneiform studies. The photographs prepared by the DARIOSH (Digital Achaemenid Royal Inscription Open Schema Hypertext) project at L’Orientale University of Naples shed light on some ambiguities of this specific inscription and led to the proposal of a new text edition of DPg. The purpose of this article is to follow the whole history of studies on DPg until today and then propose a new reading of the inscription and a discussion of related issues, including its unique creation formula and orthography.

This talk aims to discuss the role of media and material support in the royal Achaemenid inscriptions and their connections with the scribes, the process of composing the inscriptions, their contents and the audience (or readers).
In the first part, I will classify the royal inscriptions -according to the function of their material support- into two main groups: “primary” and “secondary” or “accidental.” Such a classification will help us distinguish between the function of inscriptions and their potential audience later.
Then, I will talk about how the media can influence the preparation process of the inscriptions. Depending on factors such as material, content, and location, we can discuss different preparation methods. The media can also define the cases in which we expect the work of a scribe and those where we can observe the minimum presence of literate artists. Analyzing the writing conventions and errors at the same time will provide us with more information to discuss different methods of preparing the texts properly.
The medium or material support also plays a vital role in defining certain groups of audiences. In the last part of the paper, I will examine how the materials, contents, and locations would help us shed light on the different audiences of the Achaemenid inscriptions.

One of the important questions regarding the process of preparing cylinders and prisms in the ancient Near East is: How could cuneiform scribes have prepared a text in the form of a cylinder or prism? To find a practical method of recreating such cylinders, we can make an experimental attempt to create one ourselves, in order to discover likely problems which could occur during the process and probable ways of resolving them. A description of a process provided here includes the first steps i.e. preparing clay, the shaping of the cylinder, writing the cuneiform signs, drying and finally –when it is necessary- baking it.
My experience in writing cuneiform tablets and preparing copies of some cuneiform texts related to the Achaemenid period, including that of the Cyrus cylinder, would help me to propose a practical method for reproducing such cylinders.
I’ve chosen the Cyrus cylinder as a practical example in this study for the following reasons:
1- It’s among the most famous of cuneiform texts.
2- It was the result of a long literary cuneiform tradition not only in its textual structure but also in its shape.
3- The greater part of the cylinder is readable.
In my short lecture, I want to share my experiences in preparing clay cylinders and discuss the problems which have been appeared during the process. Detailed information on materials and methods used in the reproduction of the Cyrus cylinder will be presented with some pictures.

In my short lecture, I want to share my experiences in preparing clay cylinders and discuss the problems which have been appeared during the process. Detailed information on materials and methods used in the reproduction of the Cyrus cylinder will be presented with some pictures.

The afterlife of the royal inscriptions is always fascinating and, at the same time, a challenging issue. Like other ancient Near Eastern dynasties, Achaemenids left numerous royal inscriptions on a variety of material supports. The fate of those royal epigraphs after the fall of the Achaemenid empire is one of the unique issues in the Achaemenid studies. Current research aims to discuss the afterlife of some royal inscriptions found in the heartland of Achaemenids (i.e., Persia). Archaeological evidence and historical records indicate that some royal inscriptions were reused after the fall of the Achaemenids. Studies on those inscriptions are based on two different sources: archaeological evidence of Achaemenid royal inscriptions and historical accounts on some inscriptions in the Post-Achaemenid era. Generally, there are two types of Achaemenid royal inscriptions found in the secondary use: 1- royal epigraphs as simple building materials used for construction purposes; 2- inscribed objects as sacred objects bearing magic signs (i.e., cuneiform signs). After a brief review of the archaeological and historical evidence, it will be discussed how the inscriptions' materiality influenced the afterlife of those royal inscriptions.

Our knowledge about the scribes at the royal court of the Achaemenids is so limited that without evidence of those individuals in the Pre-Achaemenid periods, it would be nearly impossible to talk about them. Because of difficulties regarding the long history of literacy in the Ancient Near East, the focus of this discussion would be mainly on the first millennium B.C. in both Babylonian and Assyrian royal courts. The discussion begins with the terminology of the scribes at the Mesopotamian royal courts and then continues with textual evidence regarding those scribes and their duties. Later, I will talk about the terminology of the scribes in the post-Achaemenid period.
