On the occasion of the sixteenth centenary of the "Conlatio cum donatistis" held in Carthage in June 411 under the decisive influence of St. Augustine, this note describes the most important phases of the preparation and development of the meeting which gathered in Carthage nearly six hundred bishops from both parties, then highlights the various points of interest offered by the survived documentation – the "Gesta conlationis" in particular – along with some anti-donatist texts written by Augustine after the "Conlatio". The study of donatism, with still continues without interruptions, can provide some elements of discussion on the worrying connection between religion and violence, that today has come back into the news.

In the confession of faith which is mainly used in the liturgy (the «Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed») the Church confesses his faith in the kingship of Christ, «whose kingdom shall have no end». The paper – written for non-specialist readers - recalls the circumstances that led to include this statement in the "Creed" of the Church, in the context of the theological debates raised by Arianism, and following the doctrines professed by (or attributed to) Marcellus, Bishop of Ancyra, whose teaching was for a long time a point of considerables difficulties in the arduous search for the orthodox formulation of Christian faith.

The paper studies the title of the main work of Apollinarius of Laodicea, the «Demonstration of divine Incarnation in the likeness of man». This title is significant in respect both of the methods of Apollinarius, which was the first in applying to Christology some «demonstrative» methods, already used by Christian apologists, and of the Christological vocabulary, which shows how Apollinarius used a rather archaic language in an innovative way

Il contributo si propone di indicare i tratti principali dell’influsso avuto sul concilio Vaticano II dal «ressourcement» patristico del Novecento. Dopo aver richiamato le discussioni in merito alla vigilia del Vaticano II e nei primi dibattiti conciliari, vengono indicati tre snodi centrali, nei quali il riferimento ai Padri della Chiesa ha giocato un ruolo importante: l’inizio della discussione sul "de Ecclesia", l’adozione dello «schema Philips», il dibattito sulla collegialità episcopale. Nella parte conclusiva, vengono indicati alcuni aspetti più significativi dell’ecclesiologia patristica accolta dal Vaticano II.

"Between 2007 and 2008, in 46 «catechesis» proposed during the Wednesday general audiences, pope Benedict XVI introduced 36 Fathers of the Church or ecclesiastical writers. After giving a brief overview of these speeches, the article reports the qualifications used by Benedict XVI when speaking of the Fathers, the most distinguishing features of their way of making theology, some of the most highlighted theological and spiritual contents with a special attention given to patristic doctrine of the prayer. This kind of approach reveals a «symphonic» attention to the tradition of the Church, that does not want to confine Fathers to specialized studies, but wants them to be listened to by the Church, in a way wich resembles the «return to the sources» that favored the renewal of the council.


Tra il 2007 e il 2008, in 46 «catechesi» proposte durante le udienze generali del mercoledì, il papa Benedetto XVI ha presentato il profilo di 36 Padri della Chiesa o scrittori ecclesiastici. Dopo uno sguardo d’insieme su queste catechesi, l’articolo richiama le qualifiche con le quali Benedetto XVI designa i Padri, i tratti più rilevanti del loro modo di fare teologia, alcuni dei contenuti teologici e spirituali più sottolineati, tra i quali spicca l’attenzione che il papa ha riservato alla dottrina patristica sulla preghiera. L’approccio che emerge è quello di un’attenzione «sinfonica» alla tradizione della Chiesa, che non vuole relegare i Padri nello studio specialistico, ma li offre all’ascolto della Chiesa in una linea simile a quelle del «ritorno alle fonti» che contribuì a preparare il rinnovamento conciliare."

Returning to the sources became a major theme of catholic theology, especially in France, in the mid-20th century; but it simultaneously aroused distrust and suspicion right to the eve of the 2nd Vatican Council. And yet the latter would also give the opportunity of emphasizing the return to the sources as the mainspring of theological renewal. This paper takes a close look as a way in which the return to the patristic sources contributed to shape the ecclesiology of Lumen Gentium, a contribution which have characterized the theological understanding of the church, as elaborated by the 2nd Vatican Council.

The theological study group asked itself about the meaning of the ad gentes today within a discovery of the theology of history, as an opening out to the mystery of salvation offered to all peoples. This reflection evidences the dimension of dialogue in relation to other cultures and religions and to all the situations of world society. To this ad extra perspective there should be a corresponding synodal set-up within the Church. But it has weakened since the immediate post-conciliar years, which had discovered a fundamental category in it. Along this line of rediscovery of Vatican II, it set out to reassess the category of Church as People of God and, within this, to clarify that of the missionary laity. Despite the fact that theology has oen considered it, it would appear that in the Church the link between universal and particular, which involves the whole mystery of the Incarnation, has not yet been resolved. The realisation that the centre of gravity of the Church is moving from North to South is also a challenge as to the role of our Churches, which are more formed historically, but are now a minority in the ecclesial universe. It is precisely the end of a Christian World and the fact that the Church is in a minority every- where that obliges us to make a new study of the Church-world relationship, along the lines of Gaudium et spes, but with greater consideration of the learning rather than the teaching character of the Church herself.

"The paper «Christian salvation and forms of theological thought. A reflection in the light of the theological contribution of Ghislain Lafont» aims to present the different aspects of the theme «salvation», in connection with the different models of theology known in Catholic theology, according to an historical reconstruction drawn from G. Lafont.
What emerges is a prevalence of a theological «wisdom» model, in which it remains difficult to recognize and take seriously the flow of time, which instead is essential to the biblical perspective.
Always in the light of the reflection of Lafont, the last part of the article summarizes the essential features of a theological soteriology able to recover the temporal consistency, in accordance with a «prophetical» theological model.
What emerges is the primacy of the narrative approach, and therefore of the biblical and liturgical fields, from which you will then have to recover the ethical, contemplative, speculative and practical dimensions of the theological work.

Il saggio si propone di presentare le diverse declinazioni del tema «salvezza», in rapporto con i differenti modelli di teologia conosciuti nella storia della teologia cattolica, secondo la ricostruzione di G. Lafont. Ne emerge una prevalenza del modello teologico «sapienziale», nel quale rimane difficile riconoscere e prendere sul serio la portata del tempo, che appare essenziale invece alla prospettiva biblica. Sempre alla luce della riflessione di Lafont, l’ultima parte dell’articolo riassume i tratti essenziali di una soteriologia teologica capace di ricuperare la consistenza temporale, secondo il modello di una teologia «profetica».
Ne emerge il primato della narratività, e dunque del campo biblico-liturgico, a partire dal quale si dovranno poi ricuperare la dimensione etica, contemplativa, speculativa e pratica del lavoro teologico.

The service of the poor in Basil the Great -

Gregory of Nazianzus describes the action of his friend Basil "the Great" in favor of the poor, victims of famine that affects the Cappadocia in 368-369: thus presents her charitable work as an imitation of the "Christ the servant ," the Lord's washing the disciples' feet. For Basil , this service is rooted in a clear vision of the Christian life , based on two central and closely related ideas: the dispossession of himself in the name of Christ, and the right administration of the goods in favor of the poor. The "monastic" mode of Christian life will particularly highlight these points, addressed, however, to all Christians. Basil also knows how to combine in a unique way the clarity of theological and spiritual ideas with the organizational skills: so that the service to the poor will come to constitute a "new city " of charity , a fact that revolutionizes from within the mode of social life, based on a specific way, radically evangelical, of living the christian life.


Descrivendone l’azione in favore dei poveri, vittime della carestia che colpisce la Cappadocia nel 368-369, Gregorio Nazianzeno parla dell’amico Basilio «il grande» e ne presenta l’attività caritativa in termini di imitazione del «Cristo servo», del Signore che lava i piedi ai discepoli.
Questo servizio si radica, in Basilio, in una visione precisa della vita cristiana, nella quale due punti cardinali, strettamente connessi, sono dati dalla spoliazione di sé in nome di Cristo, e della retta amministrazione dei beni in favore dei poveri. La modalità «monastica» della vita cristiana metterà particolarmente in luce questi punti, indirizzati peraltro a tutti i cristiani.
Ma Basilio sa unire in modo unico la lucidità della visione teologico-spirituale con la capacità organizzativa: di modo che il servizio al povero arriverà a costituire una «nuova città» della carità, una realtà che rivoluziona dall’interno le modalità della vita sociale, sulla base di un modo specifico e radicalmente evangelico di vivere la realtà ecclesiale."

Il saggio presenta alcuni aspetti dell’insegnamento e dell’opera del vescovo Gilberto Baroni (1913-1999, bolognese, vescovo di Reggio Emilia dal 1965 al 1989); si guarda, in particolare, al modo in cui mons. Baroni ha presentato il rapporto tra la Chiesa, la sua missione di annuncio del vangelo, e il ministero del vescovo.

The paper presents some aspects of the teaching and work of Bishop Gilberto Baroni (1913-1999, from Bologna), Bishop of Reggio Emilia from 1965 until 1989:  takes into account especially the thought of Bishop Baroni on the relationship between the Church and her mission of proclaiming the Gospel, and the ministry of the Bishop.

The article studies the reception of Second Vatican Council in the italian dioceses of Reggio Emilia and Guastalla, in the context of the conference organized by the Faculty of Theology of Bologna on the reception of the council in Emilia - Romagna."

This note gives an extensive account of a recently published research (G. Flynn - P. D. Murray (eds.), Ressourcement. A Movement for Renewal in Twentieth-Century Catholic Theology, OUP, Oxford 2012)  which examines the issue or the «return to the sources» and of the significant role that this approach to research and reflection has played in the catholic theology of the Nineteenth century. The wealth and variety of contributions offer a broad and diversified vision of what has been, especially in the French-language theology, the richest and the most significant period in the year preceding and preparing the Second Vatican Council. The dynamism of the ressourcement continues up to date to positively affect the self-understanding process of the Church and of theology.

La Nota dà conto in modo esteso di un’ampia ricerca, di recente pubblicazione  (G. Flynn - P. D. Murray (eds.), Ressourcement. A Movement for Renewal in Twentieth-Century Catholic Theology, OUP, Oxford 2012), dedicata alla questione del «ritorno alle fonti» e del ruolo determinante che questo approccio di ricerca e riflessione ha svolto nella teologia cattolica del Novecento. La ricchezza e varietà dei contributi offre uno spaccato molto ampio e diversificato di quello che è stato, specialmente nella teologia di lingua francese, il momento più ricco e significativo dei decenni che hanno preceduto e preparato il concilio Vaticano II. Il dinamismo del ressourcement continua a esercitare fino a oggi un benefico influsso nell’autocomprensione della Chiesa e della teologia.

Basandosi sui serm. 355-356 di sant’Agostino, l’articolo presenta alcuni aspetti più caratteristici dell’uso dei beni economici nell’Ippona del quinto secolo. Si percepisce bene il modo in cui Agostino intende vivere in povertà, insieme con il suo clero, il ministero pastorale; emerge il rispetto per la comunità cristiana, alla quale il vescovo rende conto dell’uso dei beni, destinati alle necessità della chiesa e al sostentamento dei poveri. Si constata la preoccupazione di Agostino di coinvolgere anche i laici nell’amministrazione dei beni della Chiesa.




In light of Serm. 355-356 of Saint Augustine, this paper presents some of the most characteristic aspects of the use of economic goods in the church of Hippo in the fifth century. Augustine wants to live the pastoral ministry in poverty, along with his clergy; he shows high respect for the Christian community, in front of which he makes a careful statement of the use of wealth for the needs of the church and helping the poor. Man can see the concern of Augustine to involve the laity in the administration of the goods of the Church.
