CONTEXT: Epithelioid hemangioma or angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia is an uncommon benign vascular neoplasm that is usually located on the face or neck. Exceptionally, it has been described affecting the colon, with only two such cases described in the worldwide literature. The aim here was to present a case of primary epithelioid hemangioma of the sigmoid colon with confirmation by immunohistochemical examination. CASE REPORT: A 37-year-old woman had had a complaint of intermittent abdominal pain for six months. Two months after the condition started, she began to present changes in her intestinal habit, with evacuations containing blood and mucus and a weight loss of 4 kg over this period. At physical examination, a palpable mass was noted in the lower left quadrant of the abdomen. Neoplasia of the colon was clinically suspected and she underwent colonoscopy. This demonstrated the presence of a vegetating sessile lesion of approximately 5 cm in diameter, at a distance of 36 cm from the anal margin. It occupied 80% of the intestinal lumen. A biopsy collected during the examination suggested a diagnosis of neoplasia of vascular origin. After surgical resection, histopathological examination of the resected specimen confirmed the diagnosis of epithelioid hemangioma of the colon, which was backed up by the immunohistochemical panel (factor VIII, Ki-67, CD-34). At present, three years after the surgery, the patient is asymptomatic, she has recovered her normal weight and she has normal findings from control colonoscopy. Despite the rarity of neoplasia of vascular origin, this possibility should be considered in the differential diagnosis for colorectal tumors.

Adolescents (10 to 18 years old) from a rural area in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil were tested using the Behavioral Assessment and Research System (BARS) to evaluate their performance. Participants were drawn from two areas--a school serving farm children (rural N=38) and a school serving children from a city within this area (urban N=28). These children were drawn from an ongoing study being carried out by Fundação Oswaldo Cruz where rural and urban participants were matched for age, sex, and level in school. For this ongoing study, the participants had been interviewed to determine their occupational history, especially their activities that might involve exposure to pesticides. Interview responses were used to assign an exposure index to each participant. While a few BARS performance measures suggested behavioral impairments for the rural versus the urban participants, a stronger and more consistent association between BARS measures (especially impairment of tapping, digit span, and selective attention) and level of exposure to pesticides was noted when the exposure index was entered into a multiple linear regression analysis. Exposure appeared to be especially strong for the youngest participants (10-11 years old). The relationship between these behaviors and the exposure index was stronger than the relationship between behaviors and either age or sex.

This study aims to evaluate diets for military horses in moderate activity. This experiment was conducted at Cavalry School of Brazilian Army where diets for horses of Ceremonial Squadron was evaluated. Diets were composed by commercial concentrate, Coast-cross grass hay and hydroponic oat. An performance trial in an randomized block design with three blocks (age of animals) and three treatments (experimental diets) were used. Diet I, fifteen horses fed diets composed by commercial concentrate with alfalfa hay into the pellets; Diet II, fifteen animals fed diets composed by commercial concentrate pellets; Diet III, fourteen animals fed diets composed by commercial concentrate pellets plus 3.0 kg hydroponic oat. Three kilograms of Coast-cross grass hay were added in all diets. At the end of this trial, a digestion trial was carried, in a complete randomized design, with three treatments (diets) and four replications (animals) to evaluate digestibility nutrients of diets, according total feces collection method. Values were submitted by variance analysis and means compared by Tukey test at 5% probability. Animals fed experimental diets maintained body weight and corporal score without any change according to nutrients contents in the diets. The coefficients digestibility of nutrients were changed in function of the diets and experimental diet composed by commercial concentrate with alfalfa hay into the pellets were more digestible. Intake of digestible energy and protein were adequate to military horses in moderate activity. Intake of dietetic fiber as NDF and ADF were adequate to minimum recommendations for horses.

com uma imagem de Guy Fawkes, revolucionário inglês do século XVI.

The novel The Road (2006) represents a detour in the writings of American novelist Cormac McCarthy. Its concise prose and apocalyptic setting signalize a departure both from his early novels (which are closer to the Southern Gothic) than his latest ones (Westerns). By following a Father and Son’s journey through a devastated country, the author makes a commentary on contemporary United States of the post-9/11, and the rise of the neocons and the strengthening of neoliberalism. In order to investigate how the book figures the present, this master thesis highlights elements of our time that materialize in the narrative. Thereunto, it starts locating McCarthy’s work in the contemporary American literature, and The Road’s role in his bibliography, culminating in the analysis of the focalization in this novel, and what it represents. Afterwards, the axis of the this work turns to the 9/11 literary production, and once again how the novel stands out in this group – opposing The Road to another contemporary book: Don DeLillo’s Falling Man. Lastly, the formal analysis of the narrative will investigate the apocalypse and the dialectic established between it and dystopia, which are the two forces dueling in the book. Thus, by articulating this movement we investigate the role of the characters, setting and time. As Fredric Jameson theorizes, we live in the age of Late Capitalism, also known as Post-Modernity, and this appears throughout the novel, as we will demonstrate in the present work. The main theoretical foundation of this thesis is, again, given by Jameson in his The Political Unconscious, in addition to concepts formulated by Tom Moylan on utopia/dystopia, and Frank Kermonde on apocalypse, among others.

O romance The Road (2006) representa um desvio na carreira do escritor norte-americano Cormac McCarthy. Sua prosa concisa e seu cenário apocalíptico marcam um distanciamento tanto de seus primeiros romances (mais próximos do gótico sulista) quanto dos mais recentes (westerns). Acompanhando a jornada de um Pai e um Filho por um país devastado, o autor faz um comentário sobre os Estados Unidos contemporâneo do pós-11 de setembro e da ascensão neoconservadora e fortalecimento do neoliberalismo. Com o intuito de investigar como o livro figura o  presente, essa dissertação evidencia elementos de nosso tempo que se materializam na narrativa. Para isso, num primeiro momento, situa a obra do escritor no panorama da literatura americana contemporânea, e o papel de The Road dentro da bibliografia de McCarthy, culminando com a análise do foco narrativo, e o que ele representa. A partir disso, o eixo do trabalho se torna a produção literária do 11 de setembro, e novamente como o romance se destaca dentro desta – contrapondo-o a outra obra contemporânea a ele: Falling Man, de Don DeLillo. Por fim, a análise formal da narrativa irá discutir o apocalipse e dialética estabelecida entre ele e a distopia, que são duas forças em duelo no livro. Assim, articulando esse movimento investigamos o papel dos personagens, cenário e tempo. Conforme teoriza Fredric Jameson, vivemos na era do Capitalismo Tardio, também chamada de Pós-Modernidade, e esta se concretiza ao longo do romance, conforme demonstramos nessa análise. A principal base teórica, novamente, é dada por Jameson em seu The Political Unconscious, além de conceitos formulados por Tom Moylan sobre utopia/distopia, e Frank Kermode sobre apocalipse, entre outros.

Publicado em 2006, o romance The Road, de Cormac McCarthy, é uma narrativa apocalítica, na qual dois personagens, pai e filho, atravessam um país desolado em busca de melhores condições de vida perto do mar. Esse artigo faz uma análise da obra a partir de conceitos formulados pelo crítico norte-americano Fredric Jameson de mapeamento cognitivo, utopia/distopia. Dessa forma relaciona a narrativa não apenas com o cenário dos EUA pós-11 de setembro, como também com a crise do capitalismo do século XXI.

RESUMO: Utopia e distopia são alguns dos principais impulsos que convivem e disputam a primazia das narrativas de um estado de crise. Ao seu modo, cada uma é capaz de dar conta de certas expectativa e frustrações em relação à ascensão do neoliberalismo como modelo econômico hegemônico, que se estabeleceu a partir do começo dos anos de 1970, especialmente diante do fracasso das aspirações utópicas da década anterior. No nosso momento, no entanto, o gênero do apocalipse se tornou ainda mais eficiente em sua capacidade de compreensão do mundo em que vivemos. Esse artigo investiga como alguns romances recentes de autores de língua inglesa, como A estrada, de Cormac McCarthy, figuram a relação entre esses gêneros literários, e como a especificidade de cada um é capaz de uma percepção única do nosso presente histórico. ABSTRACT: Utopia and dystopia are some of the main impulses that coexist and dispute the primacy of the narratives of a crisis state. In its own way, each is capable of covering certain expectations and frustrations related to the rise of neoliberalism as the hegemonic economic model, that has established from the early 1970s on, especially in face of the failure of the utopic aspirations of the previous decade. In our time, however, the apocalypse genre has become even more efficient in its ability of understanding of the world in which we live. This paper investigates how some recent novels by English language writers, such as Cormac McCarthy's The Road, figure the relationship between these literary genres, and how each one's specificity is capable of a unique perception of our historical present.
