ABSTRACT The purpose of this research is to aid manufacturers operating in multiple market segments (characterised by a number of product variants) to formulate and synchronise their product commercialisation strategy. Product commercialisation is primarily characterised by upgrading/launching product features aimed at meeting customer’s preferences, while at the same time, enabling the enterprise to achieve its major commercial objectives. Firstly, by employing the semi-automated crowd sourcing-based approach and considering qualitative customer evaluations, customer-preferred product features have been identified and their relative weights determined. Thereafter, a detailed mixed integer quadratic programming formulation has been evolved taking into account pertinent commercial objectives of the enterprise and engineering-level constraints of the product. The developed formulation has been solved using the Branch and Cut method of commercial solver, LINGO. Detailed sensitivity analysis has been carried out, followed by populating key managerial insights. The proposed framework has been illustrated using a real-life case example of operator cabin used in heavy construction equipment industry. Our focus has been on development and illustration of devised framework; hence, the superiority of results has not been claimed. Better results may be obtained using other heuristics/algorithms.

Competence is a standardized way to define the profile of an enterprise. Understanding and auditing competences acquired, required, and desired by a company and further representing them in a structured manner is a beneficial step for enhancing the company’s performance. Ontology is emerging as an effective tool to structure competences for comprehensive and transportable machine understanding. In the present paper, ECOS (Enterprise Competence Organization Schema) is presented as a mechanism to capture enterprise competence in a manner understandable by computers. The objective behind this concept is to create a web of machine-readable pages describing basic information and competences of enterprises with sets of interconnected data and semantic models. The ECOS ontology captures enterprise competences using a consistent and comprehensive list of concepts and vocabulary and converts them into a semantic web resource using the Web Ontology Language (OWL). The novel concept of an ECOS...

In order to remain in contention in the world market, it is necessary for manufacturing enterprises to design and produce new products with the shortest possible lead time as well as in an effective and competitive way. This includes features of a distributed control paradigm, to adjust to dynamic situations such as frequent process disturbances. Feasibility of a manufacturing enterprise can be enhanced by forming an efficient, flexible, and responsive network of autonomous agents, which can be termed an ‘agent networks’. The flexibility and responsiveness of an agent network can be implemented only when there is proper interaction and communication facility between its various entities. The goal of this paper is to streamline the structural intricacies related to the agent network so that the system as a whole can be more flexible and responsive. In this context, a fuzzy c-means-based clustering algorithm is proposed to group the agents in order to capture effectively the uncertain...

This paper deals with the objective of determining an optimal part sequence on a single-stage multifunctional machining system (SSMS) with a view to achieve the broad objectives of cost minimization and time minimization. SSMS has become a preferred alternative for manufacturers to use the resource efficiently, owing to the flexibility and process variety offered by it. This paper formulates a mathematical model that considers the minimization of both set-up cost and time simultaneously. The option of hiring an additional fixture has ...

Traditional statistical process control (SPC) techniques are not applicable in many process industries due to autocorrelation among data. In addition, most conventional charts are based on the assumption that quality characteristics follow a multivariate normality assumption. Therefore, the reduction in process variability obtained through the use of SPC techniques has not been realized in the industries. However, this may not be reasonable in many real-world problems and its extension poses serious limitations. Hence, it is not only ...

Although Six Sigma has been in business lexicon for more than 20 years, research has shown the need of practical implementation framework for successful deployment of Six Sigma, especially in the context of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This article proposes a Six Sigma implementation framework customised to the needs of SMEs by performing a critique of quality management frameworks/models for SMEs and drawing conclusion from the empirical research conducted over 3 years. If Six Sigma is poorly launched, it will be very difficult to reorganise and regain momentum. Though the framework was tested in three SMEs and revised, still its robustness needs to be checked and refined based on suggestions and comments from industry, practitioners and academics.

In this article, a simulated annealing (SA) based heuristic approach is presented to provide a solution to an industrial scheduling problem encountered in an aluminium foundry. An endeavour to enhance the performance of conventional SA algorithms is made by the aid of a new operator namely the kin selection operator which is embedded in the SA algorithm. This operator is inspired by a phenomenon of the same name observed in evolutionary systems. By sacrificing a better solution for its 'kin', the heuristic ensures a more efficiently ...

ABSTRACT Real-time adaptive production control in the flexible manufacturing cell (FMC) is a complex issue that needs to be addressed to realize good performance and high productivity. In this paper, we have considered a support vector machine (SVM)-based simulation approach to resolve a production control problem in an FMC that operates in a dynamic environment. A SVM-based simulation approach chooses the most relevant scheduling rule out of several predefined ones on the basis of the current states of the system. This paper examines and compares the performance of the SVM-based simulation approach with the competent scheduling rules under two different operational environments which are characterized by the uncertainty of demand. We have also developed a Visual Basic-based simulation approach for scheduling of component parts in the context of FMC under different situations. The SVM methodology to control the production offers better performance than the single-rule-based production control system.

The fast changing market scenario and shifting consumer interest has enforced the steel industries to upgrade their traditional supply chain with the modern leagile ones to compete in the market. The paper shows the importance of the information obtained by a new hybrid AIS-FLC algorithm in which the Artificial Immune System inheriting Fuzzy Logic Controller (AIS-FLC) tool has been utilized for scheduling the charges in steel industries. The results have been compared with those obtained from GA, simple AIS, and some of the priority rules to show the efficacy of the AIS-FLC algorithm. The paper also emphasizes on managing the information to improve the performance of steel industries.

In reliability optimization problems, it is desirable to address different conflicting objectives. This generally includes maximization of system reliability and minimization of cost, weight, and volume. The proposed algorithm of a metaheuristic nature is designed to address multi-objective problems. In the presented algorithm, interaction with a decision maker guides the search towards the preferred solution. A comparison between an existing solution and the newly generated solution substantiates the desirability or fitness of the latter. Further, the utility function expresses the preference information of the decision maker while searching for the best solution. During the development of the algorithm, a new variant of particle swarm optimization (PSO) is proposed and named as ‘enhanced particle swarm optimization’ (EPSO). EPSO considers the difference between the particle's best position and the global best position for efficient search and convergence. The developed algorit...
