on children, children’s lives, and child-rearing practices, as well as their environments
and surroundings changing over time (from past to present). Paintings and
other visual documents from this time could help us interpret childhood and the
world of children from their perspective. !is article will introduce the aims of a
study and doctoral thesis, and review the possible iconographical, semiotic, visual
anthropologic and visual sociological picture analysis methods of pedagogical
research. !e goal of the thesis is to describe how the conceptions of childhood
changed in a specific period during the 15th and 16th centuries. Why did we
choose 1455–1517? It is important to understand how the inventions of printing
and the Reformation affected the way of thinking about child-rearing practices.
!e doctoral thesis was published by Eötvös Publishing House in 2015, and will
hopefully help other researchers to understand the problems parents faced in part
of the Renaissance era.

(Cole és Cole, 2006). A csecsemők hangképzését megfigyelve,
Pictures are mosaics, and could represent parts of history. My aim is to find the gaps and bridge them using iconography. Using a specific method I analyzed famous Flemish and Italian paintings of this era, such as Children’s Games by Pieter Bruegel the Elder or La Belle Jardinière by Raffaello Santi.
Sociologists James and Prout (1997) published their theory about childhood as a social construction. The new paradigm is potentially fruitful for historians. If we analyse paintings with iconographic methods we can see children as social actors. Paintings could help us to go through the interpretations of Childhood and the world of children.
A fogadó intézmény a londoni, brent kerületi Centre for Staff Development (CSD), azaz Tanárfejlesztő
megvitassák a problémáikat, tanácsokat kérjenek nehéz helyzetekre. Minden kerületi tanár részt vehet
itt továbbképzéseken, tréningeken. Lehetőség nyílik az eszmecserére. A kerületbe tartozó minden iskola
és óvoda azonos alapelvek mentén szerveződik.
évszázadokra meghatározta a németalföldi festők témáját. A korábban sokszor
félreértelmezett festőzseni munkái híven visszatükrözik kora gyermekképét.
(Endrődy-Nagy 2010:137) Az idáig pedagógia-problématörténeti szempontból inkább
csak a külföldi szakirodalomban elemzett id. Pieter Brueghel munkái segítenek megeleveníteni
azt a miliőt, melyben a 16. századi németalföldi gyermekek éltek.
Munkámban a művészettörténeti elemzés helyett arra törekszem, hogy a 16.
századi flamandok gyermekképére következtessek. Képei segítségével számos történeti
munka kellően alátámasztható. Sok esetben egyértelműen megfigyelhetők
azok a tendenciák, melyeket a középkor továbbéléseként és ugyanakkor a században
megjelenő reformáció gyermekképének előzményeként ismerhetünk fel.
occasions. The scale of population movement in the second half of the twentieth century has
been specifically striking. Nowadays we could use the term of ‘the global village’ to describe
these movements. There are large number of international schools and preschools worldwide.
I had been living in Japan for 5 years in 2000-2005 and taught English for 2-6 year old
children in such an international preschool. I worked for a company which runs an
international school chain as a business. I would like to introduce their philosophy as a
construction of childhood. Their vision about childhood is a particular example what Prout &
James called a constructed childhood. (JAMES – PROUT 1997) I will analyse some documents
and photos to explain their methods.
The Childhood and Education in Japan conference is organized at Eötvös Loránd University of Sciences,
Faculty of Pre-school and Primary Education for the first time. The focus of the conference is Japanese
education and childhood research. This topic is getting more and more popular amongst university students
and children in Hungary. To get know this region better, we researchers decided to organize such a scientific
gathering. We sent our call for papers to all Education and Japanology focused doctoral schools throughout
the country, searching for researchers with similar interests. The aim of the conference is to build a bridge
between these two disciplines, Education Sciences and Japanology, to start a discussion about Japanese
Education. We do hope you will enjoy our joint efforts and reading our abstracts!
