Architectural Projects

Going beyond the already exhausted discussion about formal intersections, this research introduces  the architectural environment of the catwalk as the real arena of mediation between fashion and architecture, one that encompasses both the need of architecture to exist through a physical space and the necessity of fashion to be seen in a visual context.
 
Fashion, as a  creative project, has utilized the architecture of the catwalk as a frame for rearranging its visual narrative and renewing itself as social phenomena. The current typologies of catwalks, however, seems to not facilitate the understanding of clothing – as its primary goal -  but instead present an environment that informs and forms what can no longer be communicated with clothes, turning itself into an object that propagates new possibilities for manipulating  the collective imagery  of marketplace. By assuming this condition, the catwalk embodies new modes of production that appropriates architecture and turns it into a strategy for generating images.
 
By understanding the fashion shows as a system formed by variables ( time, space, body, action, audience, and collection ) that have evolved in time,  this research proposes a study on  how the architectural practice  could introduce  its methodologies of analysis and design construct within the framework of the fashion shows,  proposing a reading of runway shows through specific procedures that are inherent to the architectural project, and intertwining both practices into a common territory where space, design, behaviour, movement, and bodies are organized for the creation of visual possibilities.

The shower, which exists since the Classical Greece, is reborn in its mechanised form as hydrotherapeutic treatment for the French 17th century well-off class. The presence of the patient and the doctor, generates a dialogue between the inner’s voice and the reason’s discourse. The exchange of intimate writings and medical treaties shows its history through the senses, revealing four transformation periods.

Starting from the fear to the treatment’s violence in the 17th century, an awareness of the existence of the nervous system is drawn in the 18th century. In the 19th century, the apparition of the notion of comfort, contrasts with the mensuration of its properties. In the early 20th century the shower is figured as a diversion instrument, whilst sanitary interest is focused in its specification.

The rebirth of the shower through the senses is subjected to control transformations of hygiene and spectacle.

The shower is an instrument that, nowadays, takes part of our daily personal hygiene. The use of the shower is extended in Europe in the mid-19th century, as the effect of a series of social circumstances that may be noted by different hygiene and architecture treatises.

Observing the vicissitudes that have been shaping the spaces and actions that define it, takes us to the strangeness that is object of our study. To do so we will take, from one side, the comments of Foucault about “the other spaces” and about the “society of control”, to define the other showers. On the other side we will observe that, in the beginning, the use of showers did not take part of everyday life, but on the contrary, it was inculcated through medical control and discipline in schools, hospitals, barracks and prisons.

This reflexion, developed in the two case studies of the shower and the bath-shower, will let us wonder what systems of control may still be latent in our customs, precisely through the patterns that make up the ordinary.

Resumen a ducha ocupa un lugar importante en la arquitectura de encierro. Como sistema, se difunde en el medio penitenciario en forma de cámara de gas y de ducha colectiva, deviniendo en dispositivo arquitectónico donde la dominación se justifica como valor moral. El proceso de tecnificación ocurre en tres fases: en los siglos XVIII y XIX el desarrollo de la ingeniería química permite crear artificialmente substancias a medida, y descubrir las propiedades del gas carbónico como fármaco; entre los siglos XIX y XX la prisión pasa del modelo doméstico al panóptico, mientras que se pretende eliminar el sufrimiento en el proceso de la pena de muerte utilizando la cámara de gas; finalmente, en la primera guerra mundial se dan los primeros ataques de gas masivos, mientras que en la segunda guerra, la cámara de gas y las duchas colectivas se unen en un mismo proyecto, la cámara de gas nazi. Abstract: The shower takes an important position within enclosing architecture. As a system, it is spread in penitentiaries in two forms, the gas chamber and the collective shower, becoming an architectonic device where domination is justified as a moral value. The technology process occurs in three stages: in the 18th and 19th centuries, chemical engineering development allows the way to create artificial precise substances, as well as discovering the pharmakon properties of carbonated gas; through the 19th and the 20th centuries, the prison turns from the domestic model to the panoptic form, while pretending to remove suffer in the process of death penalty, using gas chambers; finally, in the First World War the first massive gas attacks take place, and in the Second World War, the gas chamber and the collective showers get together in a single project, the nazi gas chamber.

Resumen La sistematización de la ducha popular desde finales del siglo XIX, es producto de la voluntad de eficacia militar. Este proceso parte de la centralización radial de sus instalaciones y tiende a fragmentar y seriar programática-mente su espacio y tiempo. La ducha se promueve y obliga en los establecimientos públicos, instruyendo a los niños, a los soldados y a los delincuentes en la práctica de la ducha periódica como una obligación necesaria, para posteriormente resurgir como deseo. La guerra iguala a todo el mundo como combatiente en una causa de Estado. La ducha, que inicialmente parecía exponerse como arma de guerra, pasa a ser una máquina de Estado y presenta, para el individuo nómada, la movilidad de la ducha colectiva. Para concluir, la ducha se introduce en el camino de su comercialización masiva, presentándose la paradoja de la individualización como síntesis de la sistematización y de la eficacia en fase de itinerancia. Abstract The systematisation of popular shower in the late nineteenth century, is the product of the military will towards efficiency. This process starts with the radial centralisation of its installations and tends to fragment and serialize programmatically its space and time. The shower is promoted and compulsory in public establishments, instructing children, soldiers and offenders towards the practice of periodical shower as a necessary obligation and, af-terwards, emerging as desire. War evens everybody as a combatant within a cause of State. Although initially the shower seemed to be exposed as an arm of war, it turns to be a machine of State and presents, for the nomad individual, the mobility of the collective shower. In conclusion, the shower is introduced into the way of massive commercialisation, showing the paradox of individualisation as a synthesis of systematisation and efficiency in a roaming phase.

If we look at how living normative systems work in nature, we will observe that living beings revitalize normal states by a kind of critical, non-normative experience. Claude Bernard, father of experimental medicine, has defined illness as "an innovative experience". While Georges Canguilhem, French philosopher and doctor, defines disease is an “abnormal" state required to restore the normal state: “The living body creates a disease in order to renew itself". At this point it is definitively worthwhile that we as architects positively consider our work as an “abnormal” experience capable of strengthening a renewed and revitalized state. In this manner, to deal with regulatory norms, architects should learn how to “de-regularise” a label, implementing their dexterities rather than just “labelising” their work, reducing it to “normal”. Thus, the ecological value might depend exclusively on how accurately an architect undertakes the critic of the standard norm; or in other words, how skillfully the “irregular” application is implemented by the builder in order to take full advantage of the content of the standard label.

Dans la mesure où des êtres vivants s'écartent du type spécifique, sont-ils des anormaux mettant la forme spécifique en péril, ou bien des inventeurs sur la voie de formes nouvelles ? CANGUILEM Georges, 1966 1 Compte tenu de ce que l'architecture contemporaine est obligée de respecter des textes de plus en plus techniques, son champ d'action est affecté par les règles des rédacteurs. Ces professionnels (ingénieurs, architectes, économistes, pompiers, etc.), à l'aide de leurs expertises synthétisent d'une manière pragmatique des problématiques potentielles et rédigent ensuite les dispositions règlementaires nécessaires pour les éviter. Mais leur avis technique, provenant également de l'application rationnelle des arrêtés gouvernementaux, est influencé par une sphère de pouvoir politique plus abstraite. Cela provoque la création d'un contexte architectural très bureaucratisé géré par des experts qui marginalisent d'autres réponses possibles si elles ne proviennent pas du texte officiel, c'est-à-dire de la norme. Dans ce milieu normatif, les architectes doivent respecter le bon sens de ces règles pragmatiques. Par ailleurs, ils assument que l'ensemble du projet à concevoir soit a priori fixée par des bureaucrates experts : la forme du projet, la taille, les surfaces utiles, les finitions, les matériaux, la manière de construire, les nombre et position de pièces et les mécanismes bioclimatiques. Mais lorsque les propositions architecturales sont réduites à des solutions cristallisées par des experts, nous nous interrogeons sur la pertinence de la norme imposée, du rédacteur et de la manière de s'en servir de la part des architectes. Frank LLoyd Wright, afin de définir son architecture « organique », proclame un esprit individuel, « hors norme », qui se libère des restrictions et voit au-delà du contexte social et historique imposé par des standards normatifs. Pour lui, la véritable architecture, naturelle et « démocratique », provient d'une initiative indépendante de toute imposition extérieure 2. Poussés par le même élan du maître américain, les concepteurs peuvent encore aujourd'hui légitimer une architecture plus naturelle et « démocratique », en dehors de l'environnement normatif clos des experts. C'est le cas des architectes de la Cité Manifeste à Mulhouse 3 qui, en 2ooo, ont envisagé, dans un contexte expérimental, de se libérer des normes afin de faire évoluer l'image normée du logement social. Pour un tel objectif, les architectes ont proposé des solutions novatrices et dépouillées des normes « lorsqu'elles sont surtout des habitudes de conception » 4 pour offrir aux usagers des principes de liberté et de vie. Dans ce « contexte inhabituel », la gestion locative devient problématique pour les futurs usagers. Mais lorsqu'ils prennent une place durant la réalisation du cahier des charges du projet, ils peuvent maitriser directement leurs demandes en relation avec les concepteurs qui ont carte blanche pour les innovations.

Gustave Lyon. Architecture et Acoustique. Du Trocadéro à Pleyel. (TEXIER Simon, AMC Le Moniteur Architecture, nº13, février 2001, pp. 72-77) Octubre 1927: Le Corbusier publica en L'intransigeant un breve artículo en homenaje a Gustave Lyon 1 "en un momento en el que, gracias a su labor, estalla súbitamente una verdad que los siglos habían perseguido en balde, una verdad que habíamos terminado por denominar quimérica" 2. La acústica, se decía entonces, es un misterio, al que Adolf Loos había también dedicado unas líneas 3. Ahora bien, desde hacía unos meses, una sala de música, concebida según los cálculos de un ingeniero acústico, mostraba la comprensión matemática y racional de este fenómeno. "El gran público emitió su juicio: no le sorprendió nada más aparte de la belleza de la obra; percibió una armonía evidente pero nada extraño le inquietaba, el publico la recibió, la aprobó y la catalogó" 4. "Prueba de la evolución arquitectónica", la sala Pleyel reaviva, en Francia, un debate en letargo desde la construcción de la Ópera 5 : Garnier había seguido las "vías inciertas y a menudo poco fructíferas de un trabajo meramente empírico" 6 que en cualquier caso dieron como resultado una acústica considerada unánimemente excelente 7 ; partidario de un acercamiento científico, Théodore Lachèz había insistido públicamente sobre el conocimiento somero de Garnier sobre materias acústicas 8. Finalmente, a fines de los años 20, serán Auguste Perret y Le Corbusier quienes se opondrán, tímidamente, al método empírico.

Modern Movement had a visible place in the cultural avant-garde at the beginning of the 20th century when it was able to perceive the new style, a "pure creation of the spirit". However, it is in the building sites, in the implementation of the "multitude of works of new spirit" of the Modern Movement, where masons or master craftsmen have been able to grasp in their hands the constructive and real components of architecture to give an artisanal finish to the industrial aesthetic. Indeed, with the implementation of the architecture project, this language, which is called revolutionary industrial, becomes a paradoxical artisanal and traditional reality. It is the craftsman who masters the technique, even the machine, who ultimately corrects the architect so that he understands the axis that brings man closer to the laws of Nature.

Depuis la première formulation du développement durable dans le rapport Brundtland en 1987, qui a été suivi par différents sommets et accords sur la Terre, s’est formé un imaginaire écologique normatif propre à guider rationnellement la construction d’une société « idéale » entre différentes nations. En France, le renforcement de normes de construction, notamment les réglementations thermiques RT2012 et environnementales RE2020, constitue une mise en application de cette ingénierie écologique.

De tels cadres normatifs qui visent principalement à optimiser la performance énergétique de l’environnement bâti acculent les architectes à concevoir au préalable la spatialité de leurs projets selon des solutions techniques formalisantes. De la même manière que l’« avion incorpore dans un objet technique le rêve humain de s’élever dans les cieux » (Supiot, 2015), le projet architectural homologué par la norme technique incorpore le paradigme de performance environnementale pour un profit d’efficacité. Dans ce contexte de transition énergétique, les architectes réclament aujourd’hui moins de contraintes techniques règlementaires et une liberté d’action quant aux solutions de développement durable à apporter dans le secteur du bâtiment. Faisant suite à la loi LCAP qui avait introduit le « permis d’innover », la nouvelle loi ESSOC « pour un Etat au service d'une société de confiance » constitue peut-être la réponse à leurs revendications. Cette loi autorisant le « droit d’expérimenter » permettrait aux architectes de déroger aux règlementations dès lors que leurs réalisations a priori « non conformes » atteindraient des résultats équivalents en termes de performance environnementale.

De ce fait, les architectes devraient pouvoir légitimer d’autres méthodologies opérationnelles de travail vis-à-vis des normes conventionnelles. Aussi, qu’advient-il lorsqu’une loi légitime la dérogation aux normes comme une nouvelle norme de fonctionnement ? « Dans l’ordre du normatif, le commencement, c’est l’infraction », écrivait Georges Canguilhem. Une norme, selon la pensée de ce philosophe médecin, suppose toujours d’autres régularités possibles à la régularité de fonctionnement qu’elle-même détermine. En ce sens, avec la loi ESSOC semble s’instaurer un dispositif complexe où les pratiques normatives et « hors normes » sont amenées à se compenser, se modifier ou se combiner.

Les nombreuses normes en vigueur en France apparaissent souvent comme un obstacle à la transition écologique dans les projets d’architecture. Devant ces difficultés, l’État a voulu mettre en oeuvre des dispositifs dérogatoires : les récentes lois ESSOC et LCAP. Ces lois favorisent-elles réellement une approche écologique des matériaux en architecture ? Afin d’apporter une réponse à cette question, le présent article s’intéresse dans un premier temps à trois projets lauréats de l’appel à manifestation d’intérêt de 2018 « Permis d’innover » (loi LCAP), qui ont la particularité d’ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives de valorisation des matériaux en architecture par une approche expérimentale de dérogation aux normes. Dans un second temps, il interroge l’efficacité des usages de matériaux « non homologués » et leur potentiel à redéfinir de nouvelles conditions de performance. Les dispositifs institutionnels des lois LCAP et ESSOC pourraient être aussi consolidés en s’inspirant de pratiques alternatives « hors normes » comme mode opératoire. Simultanément, la validation de la capacité d’autres matériaux pour créer des solutions écologiques inédites consoliderait ce champ d’expérimentation en cours.

Due to the fact that obligatory standards can often appear as a difficulty to environmental transition in architectural projects, the French State has set up derogatory measures inside the ESSOC and LCAP laws. These laws raise questions about the establishment and approach of standards. In the context of this article, we examine whether these laws encourage the ecological approach to materials in architecture. In order to answers to this question, we firstly analyse three laureate projects of the competition "Permis d’innover" (LCAP law) which have set up new perspectives for materials in architecture by a derogation approach of standards; then, secondly, we query the efficiency of "non-approved" originals uses of materials and its capacity to redefine new conditions of performance. The interest shown by the State in these alternative strategies and its commitment to support derogatory devices (LCAP and ESSOC laws) reveal the dimension of a new approach for architectural projects which tend to overcome the regulatory framework, and the capacity of materials to create brand new ecological solutions would consolidate this in-process field of experimentation.
