Hello, Alandmanson!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

SVGs

[edit]
Blausen 0864 ToothDecay

Hi, I saw that you recently opposed my nomination of a decaying tooth for Quality Image status on the basis that it was "too small". While I am glad the image finally got reviewed, I am wondering if you are familiar with SVG image formatting (?). This image is a vector graphic, which means it can be scaled to any size without loss of image quality (unlike a photograph). Such files are meant to be memory-efficient (small file size) while still highly detailed and (hopefully) informative. Anyhow, just wanted to check— I myself only discovered SVGs while trying to illustrate a teletherapy capsule several years ago, and it was an eye-opening experience! well we can't argue with THE expert! Thanks for checking. My 'bible' is Mark Williams' BUTTERFLIES AND SKIPPERS OF THE AFROTROPICAL REGION, but he doesn't illustrate the female forms at all. Charles (talk) 11:28, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Troublesome coding

[edit]

Hi! Just wanted to explain why I altered your post on QIC CR. Some characters corrupts the code if they are placed inside the double brackets (). One of them is the =. I have replaced your equations such as "1816×1635px = 2.97MP" with "1816×1635px equals 2.97MP" so that the whole box and all the text will be dislpayed properly. Hope you don't mind. --cart-Talk 11:10, 6 May 2017 (UTC) Thanks! I could not work out what the problem was --Alandmanson (talk) 11:56, 6 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

"Field by crop" categories

[edit]

Hi Alan,

I would like to inform you, that I've switched the South African crop categories from you to the standard scheme: Category:Fields in South Africa by crop

I hope you can get along with it. Additionally I've created Category:Cedara Research Station.

I think generally that we need more agricultural experts at Wikipedia!

Best Regards, ISIL-KP (talk) 22:16, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

On the whole, I have no problem with your moves - however, I did not feel that pictures of single plants or leaves fitted a "fields" category Alandmanson (talk) 12:10, 19 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

POTY 2017

[edit]

Hi, congratulations for having one of your pictures in the 2017 POTY contest! I noticed that you edited it to remove a spot, but in the process the image was enlarged and the EXIF info was lost. I'd humbly suggest that the original size be kept, as well as the EXIF info. If I may suggest yet another improvement, there's a small white dot right above the hair on the insect's back, and another one on the picture's lower right corner that could also be photoshopped. Kind regards, —capmo (talk) 15:07, 14 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Jumping spiders

[edit]

I created a category: Vicirionessa mustela, and found that one of the spiders may not belong to the same species as the other three. Or perhaps it does, I'm no expert on them. JMK (talk) 20:40, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm no expert either, but apparently the black one is a male and the others are females. Alandmanson (talk) 12:45, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
