Sustainability
Burners Without Borders (BWB) is a proud partner of the Burning Man Project: 2030 Environmental Sustainability Roadmap. The roadmap outlines three goals:
1. Handle Waste Ecologically 2. Be Regenerative 3. Be Carbon Negative.
BWB has been stewarding the second goal: Be Regenerative. Our vision is to guide our global culture towards a future where, “by the end of the next decade, it is better for the Earth’s ecology for Burning Man to exist than to not exist.“
Achieving this vision requires massive global collaboration. To support this effort, we’ve focused on empowering teams and community projects that foster sustainable practices and regenerative initiatives. Here are some of the project and partners we’ve been working with to reach this goal:
Green Theme Camp Community (GTCC)
The Green Theme Camp Community is a broad alliance of Burning Man Theme Camps working towards elevating awareness and practices of how to create more sustainable and regenerative theme camps.
Several of the following projects have grown out of the GTCC and is an emergent community.
BLAST: Burner Leadership Achieving Sustainable Theme Camps
BLAST is a green camp rating system that offers a framework for energy and resource efficient, environmentally conscientious, and regenerative theme camps. If you’ve heard of LEED for green buildings, think of BLAST as the Burning Man equivalent. BLAST gives you a score on: Power, Water, Food, Waste, Shelter and Transportation.
We provide an incentive to “Green Your Burn,” recognizing camps for successful sustainability efforts.
Renewables for Artists (RAT) Team
RAT is an international all volunteer participatory community group and we educate and mentor artists and others to move away from having to use generators to power their installations. We help artists who have no or little knowledge about renewable energy systems that are suitable for use at Black Rock City.
RAT hosts of education materials supporting folks in learning more about power and in particular solar.
The Green Corridor
The Green Corridor is a sector in Black Rock City that contains theme camps working towards the goals of the 2030 Roadmap. The vision is to make the movement around sustainable infrastructure and practices more cohesive and tangible. By establishing this green neighborhood in Black Rock City, participants are offered an opportunity to teach, learn, and inspire through an experience that enriches both the environment and ourselves. BWB is proud to be an instigator and entrance to the Green Corridor.
Playawide Compost Program
Since 2015, the Playawide Compost Program has been a volunteer-based composting program at Burning Man to encourage all 10 principles, especially our favorite – Leave No Trace! – in support of Burning Man’s 2030 Environmental Sustainability Roadmap. At Burning Man 2023, 868 camps, almost 70%, sorted their waste and composted!
We’ve had over 22,000 individuals participate in the program, which means that over 23,000 pounds of compost has been collected, totaling over 203,000 pounds of greenhouse gasses has been reduced!
LAGI & Fly Ranch
In 2020, 500 people on 185 teams submitted proposals based on Fly Ranch design guidelines. The proposals were reviewed by 200 technical advisors who left 2,000 comments. 50 members of the shortlist committee picked 52 shortlisted projects. 33 jurors selected the top ten projects. Lodgers received the most votes. Each of the shortlisted projects is open for comments. The top ten teams have started prototypes and we hope to build more.
