Go /p/ro:
• Please post images that are JPG format and ideally smaller than 1 MB, and/or about 1000 pixels on the longest side.
• Expect to be judged harshly. Learn to deal with it.

Want:
• We come here for photos, so post yours as often as possible, even if "image unrelated" to your text.
• "Flickr/500px/Tumblr/Facebook/Portfolio" threads are for critique and networking.
• Use "Recent Photos" threads if you are shy or only want to post a couple of photos.
• Shared raw files which we can collectively edit for discussion of post-processing techniques, are encouraged.
• Use the Catalog to consolidate similar topics (photographic themes, images or technical gear threads).

Do not want:
• Go to /wsr/ or /r/ for specific Photoshop requests.
• Gear threads are discouraged, but identified as necessary. Many users simply hide these threads.

>Gear thread for all gear related questions, news, bitching, and dick-measuring competitions

I personally am about to drop $2k AUD on a new Canon and want people to tell me I'm retarded one way or the other. I'm either buying an R8, R7, or R6 and can't make my mind up. Currently rocking an R10, but most of my lenses are FF. I'm kind of swaying to the R7 because of all the "pro" features and the fact I like the FoV of my current primes 24/50/100mm. However the amount of faging people do about FF just being overall superior is causing me to be indecisive.

I do landscape, astro, travel snapshits, and macro primarily. I'd rather keep bulk to a minimum which is why I'm leaning towards the R8 over the R6, but like I said, call me a retard and tell me why.

Every generation has its peaks after which nothing improves. mirrorless just hit most of its peaks very early because professional videographers are driving the market hard and professional photographers are still using older shit.

>DSLR peaking for photo
nikon d750, d850
canon 5div, 5ds r
pentax k-1 mk1

>Mirrorless peaking for photo

nikon zf - best prosumer camera, best for adapting manual lenses

They do though, I browse quite a few photography forums and also flickr alot. I am always struck by how much people here photograph the corners of buildings.
Its like the users of /p get subliminally trained to see building corners by browsing all the photos of building corners and then ending up taking photos of corners of buildings themselves.

its just a strange cycle.
>>
Trust me on this, I own digital cameras and film cameras, they BOTH suck at metering.

You need a stand alone hand held meter. I have not adjusted or moved an exposure slider ever since I started using it, its just always right.

Only problem is stuff like if you want to shoot clouds in the sky, you just have to remind your brain, a cloud should be brighter than middle grey, so go 1 stop brighter than the meter says.

But for anything involving people the meter is incredible, same with landscapes. Its just perfect every single time.
>>
Film is just a huge crutch. Literally take some semi blurry shot of a house/car/street and the chemicals will do the rest.
>>
OP here, I think I figured out part of the problem. Since I moved to aps-c digital, all my floating aperture lenses are now effectively f/5-f/8 and so there is a lot more DOF than I want/am used too. I will try to get my hands on an f/2.8 zoom or maybe a few fast primes and see if that helps.

metering is autistic
there are no good ways to trust it
they meter off JPEG rendering in the camera so white balance affects metering when it shouldn't

you have retards (not really all, but most of them are) who try metering in a custom 1.00 1.00 1.00 coefficient WB to let them properly ETTR (look up uniwb) but even that's not foolproof or really effective

do you have severe autism?
do you want to trial end error your way out of this pitfall of suffering andi misery while battling other people's autism (manufacturer not giving you a proper meter) in the process? if so, trial and error is the way to go... but you'll never really figure it out unless you are a fucking autismo supreme capable of figuring out cryptic bullshit the manufacturer is hiding from you

besides that I'd say just shoot more and get comfortable for ballpark guesses then for shots where proper eposure matters, switch to exposure bracketing mode and just do some shots at different exposures and pick what turns out best
unfortunately the manufacturers have made simple metering impossible so you're fighting an uphill battle of nonsense

but bracketing is a nearly guaranteed way to ensure you're getting at least one shot in perfect exposure
>>
>>4382079
I feared as much.

A few weeks ago I got some shots that turned out really well, but the entire time I was taking them I was cursing my camera and retaking nearly every shot with an offset exposure, and I'm pretty sure I only got vaguely in the ballpark because of the aforementioned fake highlight ceiling guessing game.

For now, since the process of trial and error was not enjoyable at all in the moment, I'm going to try going back to film.
Just cleaned up an AE-1P, and I think I'm really going to enjoy metering for the shadows and having every shot come out correctly exposed for a change! Just need to fix my jammed Praktica MTL50 and a Zorki 4 and if it goes well maybe I will throw my impossible to expose correctly digital kit in the bin and just accept that photography is a pay-per-shot activity.
>>
>>4382082
P.S. I hope my return to film will justify my new appreciation for how film swallows overexposure instead of punishing you for trying to get your exposure correct.
>>
>>4382079

fresh account will give you temporary boost of views/likes/follows to hook you up, so if you have empty account with one photo that you created 3 years ago, don't use it, make a new one. Instagram only pushes reels so if you publish photos only and starting just now (you don't have follower base from 'good ol' days') then after initial 'love bombing' you will be buried by algo and will get like 3 likes a week and some follows from bot accounts. Meta is there to make money, indirectly to use your content and directly to make you pay for engagement so if you're not paying for advertising your acc there you will not get much views unless you post rage bait, skin or stupid shit like 'not washing your hair for month daily vlog'. Other shit like 'posting frequently', 'making 6 stories a day', 'using description instead of tags' simply doesn't work. Comments, shares and saves get your stats up, but from genuine users, you will not boost it from the same IP or with 10 accounts created on 1 email address. Boosting companies will with good probability get your account banned, Meta only allows them to advertise on their platforms because well pecunia non olet, but once you start using them you sooner or later will get banned (temporary or perm).
TL;DR you have to pay for advertisement if you want to make some non-rookie numbers on your instagram

The film has plenty of resolution when not behind a shit lens. I have an Instax 200 and "infinity" is actually 20-30 feet, and the close is 3 or so feet.

When taken at exactly those distances, the photos can be sharp. All other distances - blurry shit.

I just want a decent camera for it that isn't 800 currencies, but I'll probably relent and get the mint rangefinder eventually.
>>
>>4382081
>The film has plenty of resolution when not behind a shit lens
No. It is fine for looking in person but if you scan and enlarge it you'll see there is no more detail than you can see with the naked eye. I modified an instax mini to take very sharp mamiya press lens and there is basically no difference in resolution or sharpness vs the stock lens. Only really good for bokehwhoring.
>When taken at exactly those distances, the photos can be sharp. All other distances - blurry shit.
Honestly skill issue, just position your subjects at the sharp distances.
It would be cool if fuji made 4x5 or larger instax for taking serious pictures. The colors are really great. But since they only make itty bitty film I just use it for what it is, a fun toy and not something worth optimizing quality.

Bullshit. Instax film is fine, it just has a lot less stops of dynamic range. Use a light meter and a grey card, light everything evenly around the middle grey. Here is a shot using an adapted RZ67 Pro ii and the legendary Sekor 110mm lens. Turned out so nice and painterly. Even the Instax minis are capable of producing great images for a toy if you know how to control light, I will post some examples next that I had in the last recent photo thread.

You just need a proper adapter from somewhere like Brooklyn film co to scan properly and get decent documentation. Then in photoshop to adjust the contrast, sharpness and and color shifts to mirror the original. Never looks as good as the physical print by still is workable.

Micro contrast is not real. 3D pop is not real.
Well, they may be real phenomena of an image, but they are not imparted by certain lenses due to certain optical designs.

Anyone who supports the idea of 3D pop, Zeiss pop, or micro contrast is an anti-science luddite or a grifter.

Watch any of these people try to explain what 3D pop or micro contrast is and their bullshit is self evident. If a phenomenon cannot be described using scientific language and measured objectively, it isn't real.

Every time you see an A/B test for 3D pop or microcontrast, the tester is using different camera bodies, or the composition is different, the color grade is different, different exposure levels or the lighting has changed.

The only other area that has so much peasant level superstition has got to be pro audio.

>if he likes it, it's probably a scam
By trial and error he gets into correct suppositions: Nikon has the best bodies along with Canon, Sony has the best AF, Cosina the best optics if you don't mind manual focus, Olympus best colours SOOC, sharpness is overrated.

It's Canada and he has a piss poor diet so his face always looks odd
>filmed through a car window.
The dumbass always puts a mist filter on everything but that's not that bad anyways, he uses it way too strong tho.
