ABSTRACTThis study focuses on mentally ill individuals' self‐disclosure in Facebook private groups. The research corpus consists of 30 semi‐structured personal interviews. The study was conducted according to a qualitative paradigm and the means–end approach. The aim of the study was to examine which features of Facebook groups, and which personal values encourage the mentally ill to reveal their personal story in private groups. Results indicate that a sense of personal security in the group, self‐fulfillment and, most importantly a sense of belonging to the group are the three main values that contribute to mentally ill individuals' choice to engage in self‐disclosure on Facebook private groups. This research can assist developers to design better tools that will suit the unique needs of mentally ill people and provide them an appropriate platform where they can express their voice.

The aim of this research was to examine the factors that might correlate with variables that may explain teachers’ perceptions of their information literacy self-efficacy level. The study was conducted among 101 teachers during the 2018 academic year. It used the following questionnaires: information literacy self-efficacy level, being a digital newcomer/native, personality variables taken from the Big Five model, mastery of computer applications, personal characteristics, and participation in a digital program. Researchers used a quantitative methodology. Findings present a correlation between teachers’ perceptions of their information literacy self-efficacy level and openness to experience and neuroticism, teachers’ level of digital skills, and teachers’ participation in a digital program. We propose that the ministry of education should focus on developing pre-service teachers’ and teachers’ information literacy skills, thus enhancing their information literacy self-efficacy.

PurposeExploring the considerations that guide and influence members of Facebook medical support groups to disclose private information.Design/methodology/approachThe sample included 293 participants, aged 18–85 years, who answered an online survey, 155 members of Facebook medical support groups and 138 members of other Facebook groups.FindingsMembers of medical support groups attach greater importance to privacy policy, give greater value to privacy and reveal more private information, compared to members of other groups. Members of medical support groups tend to feel that they receive more support and feel that the privacy policy preserves their privacy much more. These feelings are associated with greater self-disclosure of groups' members.Originality/valueThe research insights will help medical support groups' members and admins to put into action the fundamental right to privacy and build a set of rules tailored to their individual and group needs.

The current study focuses on students’ information literacy self-efficacy and investigated whether students estimate that they know how to handle and evaluate the vast amount of information they find on the Internet. The objectives of this study are to explore: (1) to what extent does the openness to experience variable explain students’ information literacy self-efficacy?; (2) to what extent do the cognitive appraisals threat and challenge explain students’ information literacy self-efficacy? and (3) to what extent does the variable of motivation explain students’ information literacy self-efficacy? The research was conducted in Israel during the spring semester of the 2017 academic year and involved 136 students. Researchers used five questionnaires to gather data. Findings suggested that the personality characteristics of openness to experience, as well as threat and challenge, and motivation predicted students’ information literacy self-efficacy.

A survey of iSchool and Library and Information Science American Library Association accredited school heads explored their use and opinions about academic social media platforms. Results show that ResearchGate is the venue of choice, although respondents do not believe maintaining a profile on academic social media platforms influences academic careers. Respondents do see the value of academic social media sites to enhance visibility and reputation. These data are complemented with an analysis of the visibility on academic/professional social media platforms of this group. The altmetric indicators derived from the data were compared to traditional bibliometric indicators.

The current study seeks to shed light on the usage habits of the WhatsApp application among teenagers, exploring the effect of mobile instant messaging distractions on pupils' working memory performance. Research was conducted in Israel during 2016 school year. The study sample was divided into two groups randomly—a control group and an experimental group. Researchers used six questionnaires to gather personal details, execution assessment questionnaire, and Working Memory Index from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-IV. The main findings show that WhatsApp's distractions, transmitted via smartphones, decrease pupils' performance of working memory. In addition, students are aware of the difficulty WhatsApp causes while performing a learning task and of the decrease in learning effectiveness. The e-book reader revolution is already here. The questions we asked ourselves were: What are the reading preferences of Information Science students at the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century? How do different variables, such as relative advantage, comprehension, and learning strategies affect students’ reading preferences? The research was conducted in Israel during the first semester of the 2015 academic year and encompassed 177 Library and Information Science students in an Information Science Department in Israel. Three questionnaires were used: personal details, relative advantage, and learning strategies, and two further questions that focused on reading habits. The study showed students’ preferences for printed materials. In addition, it emphasizes the importance of two personal variables that may affect students’ will to read electronic materials: relative advantage and comprehension.

ABSTRACT Purpose ‐ The purpose of this paper is to examine whether Library and Information Science (LIS) students' patterns of Facebook use are affected by personality characteristics (e.g. extroversion, introversion, self-esteem) and by their perceptions about Facebook. Design/methodology/approach ‐ Different questionnaires were distributed to 140 LIS students in a prominent LIS department in Israel. Findings ‐ The present research revealed that personality characteristics as well as gender, level of education and age influence both LIS students' patterns of Facebook use, and their perceptions about Facebook. Practical implications ‐ LIS educators should expose MA and PhD students more to social networking sites, enabling them to experience their advantages and disadvantages in the personal as well as professional realms. This exposure may cause these students to use social networks in their future work as librarians or information scientists, understanding that these platforms can serve as an additional channel of communication with their patrons. Originality/value ‐ The findings emphasize the importance of individual differences in technology use and acceptance, and may lead to further research in this field.

PurposeThe current study aims to present an exploratory analysis of the use of Facebook in American public and academic libraries, with the purpose of understanding patterns of Facebook use in libraries.Design/methodology/approachThis study presents both a statistical descriptive analysis and a content analysis.FindingsThe research findings show that both kinds of libraries use the information section and the wall and that there is a difference in the use of other Facebook sections, which was surprisingly limited in both kinds of libraries. In addition, public libraries use the wall and the photos section as major channels of information more than academic libraries. Concentrating on the content of the Facebook wall posts, it appears that there are some differences between the two sections (categories and sub‐categories). During the 2013 elections in Israel one of the major methods of interaction of the political parties and their leaders with potential voters was through their Facebook pages. These pages were followed for 50 days preceding the elections. For each page, 30% of the posts on the page were analyzed in terms of their rhetoric and subject. The largest number of the analyzed posts was intended for bonding with the audience, and unsurprisingly politics was the most frequent topic. The findings show that personal posts received the largest number of likes pointing to the personal nature of the elections. Findings were compared with results of analysis of the Facebook pages of the US Presidential candidates. Similarities were found, even though in Israel there is a party system and elections are not personal.

This study focuses on teachers’ perspectives concerning information literacy teaching in two primary schools in Israel—one school that joined the national information and communications technology program and a second school that did not. The researchers used a qualitative research method during the 2015 academic year. Eighteen teachers were interviewed. The findings suggest that participation in the national information and communications technology program did not lead to the integration of information literacy in the school’s curriculum. A significant gap was discovered in both schools between the teachers’ perceptions—who understood the importance of teaching information literacy and its actual implementation.

The current study uses the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), as well as personal characteristics such as learning strategies, cognitive appraisal, and Kuhlthau’s (1991) model of information seeking as theoretical bases for defining factors that may influence students adopting MOOCs in their learning process, as well as describe their feelings during the learning process. The current research aims to explore and analyze the application and use of a wiki, in a knowledge-management academic course. The research will focus on the level of collaboration among students and on the kind of interaction that takes take place during the learning process. The population of this study was comprised of wiki pages which were gathered from a knowledge-management wiki course in Israel. To understand the comments directed at each student on the wiki, a thorough content analysis was conducted. The results of the current research reveal that the major part of the interaction that took place on the wiki centered on content-related comments and contained both collaboration among the students and use of deep levels of cognition.

This study seeks to investigate whether information professionals, as well as LIS students, are ready to assimilate Facebook in their work and educational environments. The study uses the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as well as some characteristics of the “Big Five” model of personality as a theoretical base from which to predict factors that may influence the adoption of Facebook by information professionals as well as by LIS students. Findings reveal that the TAM, as well as other personal characteristics, significantly predict the likelihood of Facebook use and highlight the importance of individual characteristics when considering technology acceptance.

This study which is based on the Technological Acceptance Model (TAM), seeks to explore whether librarians and LIS students are familiar with the newest technological innovations and whether they are ready to accept them. The research was conducted in Israel during the first and second semesters of the 2012 academic year and considered two populations: librarians and LIS students. Researchers used two questionnaires to gather data: a personal details questionnaire, and a mobile technology questionnaire. On the whole, the current study supported the two core variables of the TAM (perceived ease of use and usefulness), as well as personal innovativeness that may predict librarians’ and students’ behavioral intention to use mobile services in the library.

PurposeThe current study seeks to describe and analyze academic library websites in the years 2000 and 2010, as they appear both in the Internet Archive and in current library websites.Design/methodology/approachA content analysis of 31 academic libraries homepages which were selected from the ACRL accredited LIS schools was conducted.FindingsFindings reveal that the content of academic library websites in the years 2000 and 2010 has much changed over the ten years, presenting an increasing use of e‐journals and Web 2.0 applications, as well as a focus on library users, and a great use of graphics in websites.Practical implicationsThe comparison documented in the paper should prove very interesting and important to librarians, information scientists, LIS scholars and students, presenting trends, changes and innovations that have occurred within the scope of academic libraries over the last ten years.Originality/valueThis study presents a yet unexplored dimension: the comparison, foc...

PurposeThe study aims to explore WikiLeaks' worldwide impact amongst readers of three online newspapers, as expressed through reader comments. There are three primary research questions: are there differences between the three online newspapers concerning the factual information in the comments, the linguistic characteristics of the comments, and the rhetorical and style elements of the comments?Design/methodology/approachThe study focused on three online newspapers: The New York Times in the USA, The Guardian in the UK and Ynet in Israel, all popular channels of communication in their countries.
