Research suggests that the use of concept maps enhances learning transfer and retention. This paper presents a case study on the use of a hybrid concept/mind mapping online strategy (E-mapping) to develop critical reading skills in first year Egyptian students enrolled at the American University in Cairo. Seventy students participated in the study and data were collected over two semesters. E-maps and assignment-specific rubrics were used to assess learning. Student feedback was collected via early and late semester surveys and a mid-semester assessment. Results show that E-mapping is a potentially powerful active learning tool which goes beyond developing strong reading skills and enhancing class participation. It enhances critical thinking and helps students acquire visualization skills by which they can communicate ideas using imagery. It is also an assessment tool that permits instructors to gain insight into their students' analytical and synthetic skills. Although the majo...

A system for programming field programmable devices (FPDs) of different types across different boards. An in-system programmable master (ISPM) communicates over a bus to in-system programmable slaves (ISPSs) on one or more boards. FPDs on each board are connected into chains of the same type, and each chain is connected to an ISPS located on the board. The ISPM uses a packet protocol to communicate with all ISPSs in a system. Each packet comprises an ISPS address field, a chain select field, and a command field. Each ISPS reads packets addressed to it, and decodes and transmits the commands to the selected FPD chain in a protocol appropriate to the chain.

At the end of the 2003 spring semester, two years after implementing WebCT at AUC, a survey was conducted to get student feedback. An unexpected 1221 students responded. The results showed that a majority of students (68%) would like to see WebCT used in their future courses, and that the most frequently written comment was a call for instructors to use it more often. Seven out of eight advanced features of WebCT were popular with a majority (74-93%) of students when instructors used them, but four of these features, including lecture notes and the discussion tool, were not as widely used as the others. This may partly explain why a majority of students were neutral when asked if WebCT contributed to their learning.

Recent studies have shown that structural modifications of alpha-crystallin during lens aging decrease it's effectiveness as a molecular chaperone. Some of these posttranslational modifications have been linked to UV radiation, and this study was undertaken to investigate the effect of UV irradiation on the ability of alpha-crystallin to suppress nonspecific aggregation. The effect of 3-hydroxykynurenine (3-HK) was also investigated as a model for its glucoside (3-HKG), a main lens chromophore that has been linked to photochemical changes in the human lens. Alpha- and gamma-crystallin solutions (1 mg/mL, 1:0.125 wt/wt) were photolyzed (transmission above 295 nm) for various time intervals. Thermal denaturation of gamma-crystallin with or without alpha-crystallin was carried out at 70 degrees C and increases in light scattering were measured at 360b nm. We found that (1) irradiation of gamma-crystallin increased its susceptibility to heat-induced scattering. The addition of alpha...

ABSTRACT Does computer-mediation enhance student performance or student interest in the learning process? In this paper we present the somewhat tentative results of an experiment carried out in teaching/learning methodology and pedagogy. The goal of the experiment was to examine, compare and elicit results to identify the differences, if any, in learning outcomes between two classes. One class was taught using computer-mediated technologies in conjunction with“active”learning pedagogical principles; and the other class was taught by the same instructor with identical course syllabi and textbook, but using a more conventional approach of lectures and tests to achieve learning.
