Are the Nurses Alright?" is a heartfelt and deeply relatable read for anyone who’s ever worked in the world mental health nursing. Through honest, raw and witty stories, the book dives into the highs and lows of what it is to be a mental health nurse - from moments of exhaustion to the sheer priviledge of making a real difference. It’s impossible not to feel a wave of nostalgia while reading this. Each anecdote will remind you of somebody you have met in your career. The vivid descriptions of outrageous incidents, the camaraderie with co-workers, and the bittersweet moments with patients will bring back fond memories.

The writing is authentic and uncensored in the best possible way—it’s real and relatable, without sugarcoating some of the harrowing aspects of the industry.

It reminds readers of the challenges they’ve faced, the connections they’ve made along the way, and why they fell in love with nursing in the first place. It’s a touching, nostalgic read that feels like sitting down with an old friend who just gets it.

I am proud to be a mental health nurse, and even more so after reading this book. 5 stars.

I’ve always admired the way nursing staff go about their duties in their professional life, but before reading this book it didn’t cross my mind to ask any of them if they were alright.

The book kept my attention throughout. When I came to the end, it left me wanting more. I hope there will be a sequel. From the notes at the end, there are details about the dissolution of the big psychiatric hospitals. I'd love a sequel to include a description of the closing of 'St Lukes', including the impact on the surrounding community where so many of the staff lived.

This book kept me interested from start to finish and I loved hearing about a world which is unknown to most people and be soon forgotten as that type of nursing moves on. I'm sure there must be loads more stories to tell!
