This chapter focuses on the experiences of three women travelers, the Cuban Aurelia Castillo and the Spanish Carmen de Burgos and Araceli, who visited Pompeii and Herculaneum between the end of the 19th and the first decades of the 20th century. Their experience is especially important since they wrote their feelings and opinions in newspaper and review articles and in travelogues. Through these writings they give us their personal point of view on the ancient Roman world, represented by the two cities buried by the Vesuvius.

The discovering and the excavation of Pompeii and Herculaneum were fundamental for visual and scenic arts in Europe and in America. In the 19th century the impact of these archaeological findings was also evident in the island of Cuba, where they affected the period taste as well as neoclassicism. Rich bourgeoisie, landholders and cities fostered the construction and decoration of palaces, houses and theatres according to the neoclassical and Pompeian style, hiring artists and architects coming from Italy and working in different places of the island.
This chapter presents and discusses the buildings and decorations which show the impact of Pompeian discovery in Cuba.

The multi-faceted notion of politeia as a lens on Aristotle’s ideas about politics and history is the organizing focus of this monograph in Araucaria which unites essays by philosophers, historians and political theorists. What issues are focused on? The historical qualities of the research on the politeiai in relation to the Aristotelian judgement on history (Mara, Poddighe); the use of the politeiai as paradeigmata for the correction of the existing regimes and for the creation of new ones by lawgivers and politicians, be they real models (Pezzoli, Zizza) or theoretical elaborations (Sancho Rocher); the method of Aristotelian research on the politeiai (Polito); Aristotle’s ethical reflection on the principles that give unity and stability to the politeia, in particular the democratic ones (Irrera) and, finally, Aristotle’s analysis on a pragmatic way to settle the problem of stasis with political means (Knoll).

One aspect of Book 2 of Aristotle's Politics that has drawn the most attention among scholars is his discussion of the politeia of Carthage, a non-Greek political community. Bearing in mind this unconventional decision, my paper will firstly focus on the reasons that led Aristotle to include this regime by adopting the conceptual category of politeia: this, in fact, allows him to analyze political phenomena that meet a series of prerequisites and are not exclusively related with the Greek world. Secondly, I will concentrate on the criteria used by the philosopher to determine whether or not the Carthaginians' political order actually worked, showing that these criteria come mainly from the 'empirical' Books (4-6) of Politics.
