The article explores the representation of human consciousness in fiction in the light of older and more recent investigations in literary criticism, narratology, cognitive science etc. It focuses on the concept of consciousness and its interdisciplinary study, the relationship between consciousness, selfconsciousness, and narrative. In particular, the article studies the stream of consciousness novel, its reception by criticism as well as the critical terminology used to describe the phenomenon. In the light of recent cognitive approaches that underline the role of experientiality the article considers the stream of consciousness novel as a form of dynamic interaction between the subject and the environment; the fine and pathbreaking narrative practices of the modern novel are seen as forms of writing contributing to a kind of narrative ecology. there is also a brief bibliographical reference to the methods and the typologies proposed by classical and postclassical narratology for the analysis of the representation of consciousness in fiction. the article closes analyzing specific passages of modern Greek prose texts in terms of various  modalities of discourse (direct, indirect, and free indirect), psychonarration
and thought report and reports on characters’ feelings. In sum, it is concluded that the representation of consciousness in fiction is not a matter of stylistic devices and choices only, but it is deeply informed by the constitutive relation of narrative to consciousness and embodied cognition

Abstract. The present study investigates verbal inflection in Greek aphasia. We present results from a sentence completion and a grammaticality judgment task with 7 Greek-speaking aphasics and 7 control participants matched for age and education. These results indicate that inflectional morphemes are not all impaired to the same degree in aphasia: agreement inflection is relatively intact, while tense and aspect are more severely impaired. These findings are discussed in light of previous studies on inflectional errors in Greek aphasia and are considered in the context of theoretical approaches to inflectional errors in aphasia.

Background: Verbal inflectional errors are among the most prominent characteristics of aphasic nonfluent speech. Several studies have shown that such impairment is selective: subject–verb agreement is relatively intact while tense is severely impaired. A number of researchers view the deficit as structural and attribute errors to a breakdown of functional categories and their projections. Agrammatic individuals are thought to produce trees that are intact up to the Tense node and ‘‘pruned’ ’ from this node up. Aims: The present study investigates (a) the relative sensitivity of functional categories related to verbal inflection in Greek aphasia and the systematicity thereof; and (b) the relation between patterns of impairment in production and grammaticality judgements. Method & Procedures: We present results from a sentence completion and a grammaticality judgement task with seven Greek-speaking aphasic individuals and seven control participants matched for age and education. In this paper, the process of designing an annotated Greek Corpus of Aphasic Discourse (GREECAD) is presented. Given that resources of this kind are quite limited, a major aim of the GREECAD was to provide a set of specifications which could serve as a methodological basis for the development of other relevant corpora, and, therefore, to contribute to the future research in this area. The GREECAD was developed with the following requirements: a) to include a rather homogeneous sample of Greek as spoken by individuals with aphasia; b) to document speech samples with rich metadata, which include demographic information, as well as detailed information on the patients’ medical record and neuropsychological evaluation; c) to provide annotated speech samples, which encode information at the micro-linguistic (words, POS, grammatical errors, clause types, etc.) and discourse level (narrative structure elements, main events, evaluation devices, etc.). In terms of the design of the GREECAD, ...

Numerous studies have shown that language impairments, particularly semantic deficits, are evident in the narrative speech of people with Alzheimer’s disease from the earliest stages of the disease. Here, we present a novel technique for capturing those changes, by comparing distributed word representations constructed from healthy controls and Alzheimer’s patients. We investigate examples of words with different representations in the two spaces, and link the semantic and contextual differences to findings from the Alzheimer’s disease literature.

Among the ways of discourse representation, direct quotation is the most explicit form of inclusion of a speech event in a discourse. Many researchers have reached the conclusion that Direct Discourse (DD) is the mode par excellence in news reports, and that its function is to ensure faithfulness to an original discourse. This article explores the validity of these claims by comparing the forms and functions of DD in two Greek newspapers, namely I Kathimerini and Ta Nea. Our account relies upon a corpus-based approach to the study of DD forms and a qualitative analysis of a) the speech reporting verbs and b) the functions of DD in the news reports. Statistical information from the corpus provided that the most of the DD forms appeared in very divergent frequencies in the two newspapers. Concerning the functions of DD, we distinguished argumentation, dialogue that sets the scene of a conflict, interview reconstruction, evidence presentation, and legitimization. Moreover, reporting ve...

abstractPrevious research in Greek aphasia has indicated that functional categories related to verb inflection are differentially impacted, with Aspect most severely affected, Agreement least affected, and Tense occupying an intermediate position. However, research materials were not controlled for overall length or position of the verb within the sentence, confounding functional category with processing load. Using balanced materials, here we tested ten persons with aphasia and ten matched control participants on grammaticality judgment and sentence completion in three functional categories (agreement, tense, and aspect) using ten verbs spanning a range of familiarity. Production results indicated no difference in errors of either lexeme or inflectional morpheme selection. In grammaticality judgment acceptance of incorrect sentences was lower for Agreement but this pattern was mirrored in the control group as well. The results provide no basis to support a specific linguistic defic...

Metaphors of the lower senses in Greek modernist poetry.
Poetry can be a rich source of metaphors and, in particular, sensory metaphors. Our paper explores metaphors of sensory experience in the work of three Greek modernist poets: Matsi Chatzilazarou (1914-1987), Eleni Vakalo (1921-2001) and Katerina Anghelaki-Rooke (1939- ). Given that the body and its senses play a central role in their poetry, we study the lower senses of touch, smell and taste in three collective editions
of poems (Chatzilazarou, 1989, Vakalo, 1995, Anghelaki-Rooke, 2014). We explore the conceptual metaphors for the lower senses on the basis of their semantic mappings (source/target domain correspondence) while focusing also on their linguistic expression. We argue that of all senses touch is predominant in the data we study whereas smell and taste are mostly related to the experience of feelings or memory.

Literature and Dance in the decade of the 1930's in Greece. Mapping the field.

The dynamic interaction of literature and dance has only recently drawn the attention of academic scholarship, while dance research has only started to  examine aspects of contemporary dance history in Greece addressing issues of cultural identity and artistic influences.  In this contribution, I will try to map the possible relations between literature and dance as they emerged in the inter-war period in Greece.

The relations of literature to dance range from the dancing that appeared frequently across drama, poetry and fiction to the dance schools or works that were influenced by literary sources or the aesthetic ideology of the so called Generation of the Thirties. Focusing on dance as a site of renegotiation of cultural identities and/ or subjectivities within different contexts, we paradigmatically see how Greek authors appropriated dance or choreography as a metaphor for human relations or a model for their writing practices, thus finding new angles in the work of thoroughly familiar authors (K. Politis, G.Theotokas, etc.). Secondly, I will focus on the critical writings (essays, reviews, journals) of poets and prosewriters  that  found in dance a way of  thinking and a way of processing their aesthetic concerns.

The aesthetic ideology of the generation of the Thirties in Greece aimed at the renewal of arts by combining Western influences and Greek traditions. In what particular ways was dance and choreography influenced by this major intellectual and artistic movement of the inter-war period and the discussions about Greekness, modern poetry, mythology and modern art?  Any treatment of dance in this period necessarily includes Koula Pratsika (1899-1984) a major dance artist of the '30's and initiator of contemporary dance in Greece. Pratsika related dance to issues of national ideology, womanhood and a way of mind-body development.

Mapping the field of the reciprocal dialogue between the literary arts and dance performances, practices, and theories reveals new sources for the study of the Greek modernist era.

This study examines the crucial role of language and the variety of narrative tech niques employed in mediating reality (news reporting) in both the print and electronic media. It focuses on the process of selection and discourse transformation that makes up the 'news'. The conclusions reached concern four basic points: 1) the degree of nar-rativization encountered ranges from a linear, cause-effect scheme of chronological account to a complete fictionalized and dramatized account of the events recorded (narrative hegemonism), 2) there is a need to focus on new areas of research and to formulate a new typology that will account for the emerging new hybrid forms of text types in media discourse (infotainment, etc.), 3) the implications of narrativity for the function of objective newsreporting needs to be further explored, and 4) the broader confirmation that the use of specific narrative techniques and narrativization variables changes according to the sociolingiuistic profile and the 'audience design' adopted by each medium. 1. The complex relationship of Greek modernism to its Western counterparts raises important questions in comparative literary history. In particular, what specific forms does literary modernism take, how is the quest for formal innovation legitimized within the corpus of a national cultural tradition? The theoretical approach informing the present study of Interior Monologue in Greek prose fiction takes into account one of the paradoxes of Greek modernism compared to its European counterpart: the idea that the idea of " Greekness " is a necessary precondition of the definitions of Greek modernism; however radical the formal or conceptual experimentations of Greek modernists, the quest to recover the 'true' origins of Greekness and or Hellenism remains dominant.

Radio advertisements use playful imitation as a discourse tactic that creates
positive feelings toward the advertised product. A specific discourse imitates
another discourse on the basis of two opposing strategies: captation and subversion.
In captation, the investor discourse borrows the cultural capital of the
source discourse, a practice corresponding to pastiche, while in subversion,
imitation allows for the subversion of the cultural capital of the source discourse,
a practice linked to parody. Analysis of 347 advertisements transmitted by
private radio stations in Thessaloniki and Athens between the years 2004 and
2007 shows that radio ads imitate not only various genres or texts (as usually
argued in the literature), but also features of the linguistic system and its
varieties. Moreover, it is shown that pastiche and parody have informative or
playful purpose, thus formulating a continuum of four versions of imitation,
ranging from informative pastiche to playful parody.

Studies on mildly impaired speakers with aphasia conducted over the past 30 years have emphasized the clinical importance of the study of discourse production (Doyle et al. 1998, Armstrong 2000, Olness et al. 2002, Wright et al. 2005, Olness, Metteson & Stewart 2010, Stark 2010). Since people with aphasia experience particular difficulties in their everyday communication, the study of their abilities at the discourse level is a natural and objective method for assessing the communicative effectiveness of these individuals in their everyday life. Moreover, the study of discourse production can contribute to a more accurate identification of the communication impairments of speakers with aphasia, as well as to the evaluation of their response to treatment. Among the various discourse types, narrative discourse has attracted more attention in aphasia research, mainly because the abstract narrative schema provides an objective framework for the analysis of speakers’ spoken and written productions and their comparison to healthy controls. Different assessment tools including a variety of measures and elicitation tasks for narrative discourse production have been applied in aphasia research. This paper presents a comprehensive battery for the elicitation and evaluation of narrative discourse in Greek, which can serve as a valid and reliable assessment tool of narrative and communication abilities of speakers with aphasia, but also as a tool for planning effective treatment.
