- Minor Martin White (9. července 1908, Minneapolis – 24. června 1976, Boston) byl americký fotograf, teoretik, kritik a pedagog. Spojil intenzivní zájem o to, jak lidé nahlíží chápou fotografii, s osobním viděním, které se řídilo řadou duchovních a intelektuálních filozofií. Počínaje Oregonem v roce 1937 a pokračujícím až do své smrti v roce 1976 vytvořil White tisíce černobílých a barevných fotografií krajin, lidí a abstraktních témat, vytvořených jak s technickým zvládnutím, tak se silným vizuálním smyslem pro světlo a stín. Vedl mnoho kurzů, workshopů a seminářů o fotografování na Kalifornské škole výtvarných umění, Rochester Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, dalších školách a doma. Většinu svého života prožil jako uzavřený homosexuál, který se bál veřejně vyjádřit ze strachu ze ztráty svých učitelských míst. Mezi jeho nejpřesvědčivější obrazy patří studie postav mužů, které učil nebo s nimiž měl vztahy. Pomohl začít a po mnoho let byl redaktorem fotografického časopisu Aperture. - Minor Martin White (July 9, 1908 – June 24, 1976) was an American photographer, theoretician, critic, and educator. He combined an intense interest in how people viewed and understood photographs with a personal vision that was guided by a variety of spiritual and intellectual philosophies. Starting in Oregon in 1937 and continuing until he died in 1976, White made thousands of black-and-white and color photographs of landscapes, people, and abstract subject matter, created with both technical mastery and a strong visual sense of light and shadow. He taught many classes, workshops, and retreats on photography at the California School of Fine Arts, Rochester Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, other schools, and in his own home. He lived much of his life as a closeted gay man, afraid to express himself publicly for fear of loss of his teaching jobs, and some of his most compelling images are figure studies of men whom he taught or with whom he had relationships. He helped start, and for many years was editor of, the photography magazine Aperture. After his death in 1976, White was hailed as one of America's greatest photographers. (en)

Su abuelo era aficionado a la fotografía y con seis o siete años le regalaron una cámara Brownie con la que estuvo haciendo fotos hasta su adolescencia. Se graduó en botánica en la universidad de Minnesota entre 1928 y 1933 y comenzó a escribir poesías pero no obtuvo los resultados que esperaba y no disponía de suficiente dinero para dedicarse a hacer fotografías. En 1938 se trasladó a Portland donde estuvo trabajando en un hotel como vigilante nocturno mientras durante el día trabajaba en un laboratorio fotográfico afiliado a la Works Progress Administration. Se afilió al Oregon Camera Club y tuvo ocasión de exponer en el Museo de Arte de Portland. Tras realizar el servicio militar se trasladó a Nueva York en 1945 y estuvo estudiando arte en la universidad de Columbia. Entabló amistad con Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston y en 1946 se fue a San Francisco como ayudante de Ansel Adams en la California School of Fine Arts, donde tuvo como alumno a C. Cameron Macauley. La influencia de Stieglitz y la fotografía directa unida a su alto dominio de la técnica fotográfica le llevó a definir la «fotografía como un espejismo» y a conferir a la imagen de un significado interno diferente al aparente. Otra de sus aportaciones teóricas se refiere a la importancia de aquello que el fotógrafo encuentra de un modo accidental que lo expone en su obra Found photograpy. En 1952 fundó la revista Aperture que en su primer número llevaba en la portada una fotografía de Dorothea Lange e incluía dos artículos, uno sobre la captura fotográfica de y otro escrito por él mismo sobre la fotografía con cámaras pequeñas. Poco después se trasladó a Rochester para colaborar con Beaumont Newhall en la George Eastman House. Entre 1956 y 1964 estuvo enseñando en el Rochester Institute of Technology y ente sus alumnos se encontraron y Jerry Uelsmann. Después estuvo enseñando fotografía en el Instituto Tecnológico de Massachusetts hasta sus últimos días. (es)
