The findings show that creative people in Slovenia adhere to a similar percentage of the work force as in other highly developed countries; this is also the occupational group that has increased in number the most compared to others in the last decade. The spatial distribution analyses show that, similar to other countries, creative people in Slovenia are unevenly distributed. A lower concentration is typical predominantly for economically less developed regions in Eastern Slovenia, while a higher concentration occurs in more developed regions of Western Slovenia. With time, the differences between the regions increase, but decrease within the regions themselves. Contemporary settlement processes run towards a deconcentration from heavily urbanized settlement types to more sparsely populated suburbanized and rural settlements. The most important spatial distribution factors for creative people in Slovenia are: living environment quality with a great emphasis on access to nature, identity or close connections to people and places, and workplace proximity. Additionally, some important differences were identified from the aspect of the selected regionalization as well as the settlement urbanization level.

Transport accessibility as a spatial component affects the widest range of development opportunities in an area, and it should therefore represent a significant component of regional and spatial planning. This book presents the main features of transport accessibility to regional centers as the central pillars of regional and spatial structure in Slovenia. Attention is focused on addressing the situation in accessibility planning itself, followed by modeling geographic reality using spatial analyses in a geographic information system. Emphasis is placed on the state of spatial equilibrium of regional centers. This study also examines the spatial differences in their accessibility, the main reasons for these differences, and the correspondence between regional borders in various regionalization proposals for Slovenia and their centers’ borders of accessibility.

This book is based on a geographical analysis of connections between technological knowledge, competitiveness factors, and economic effects. It proceeds from the hypothesis that economic effectiveness in a region originates from the quality of human capital, in which innovations are the precondition for social progress, competitiveness, and developmental success. Research focuses on the geographical distribution of developmental generators, which often cause regional disparities. Creative social groups have a clear effect on regional development. This article analyzes the spatial expansion of the knowledge society based on socioeconomic and development indicators in Slovenia. The key finding is that these areas are unevenly distributed. The high share of employment centers of national importance and neighboring peri-urban municipalities in emerging urban regions stands out in particular. Areas with a high percentage of creative professions are more innovative and their economic and social development is more successful.

Its protection measures have always been publicly disputed and its impact questioned. This paper identifies and assesses the impact of the park on regional development. It compares two kinds of data: the municipal development coefficient based on statistical data and residents' attitudes toward the park, based on analysis of a survey, newspapers, and public debates. Triglav NP is located in two regions: Goriška and Gorenjska. Our results show that the municipalities in Gorenjska are better developed; however, the development trends in these municipalities are decreasing, whereas in the Goriška region they are increasing, overall reducing the regional differences between the two parts of the park. Text analyses reveal that lack of clarity in the management, boundaries and funding of the park, as well as inconsistency with existing legislation and international standards, have resulted in constant conflicts, which have impeded regional development. We argue that, once the conflicts are solved and local communities perceive positive changes as a result of implementing the law, progressive effects developing the protected area will follow. Triglav NP has the potential for long-term positive impacts on regional development if there is sound legislation, if this legislation is effectively implemented and if an active participatory process is put in place.

The research stems from the assumption that photographs play an important role in shaping and preserving individual and collective imagination of a landscape and that geography as a science is closely connected to visual representations of the world. The empirical part of the research entails selecting and defining/coding the photographs from the book Slovenian Landscapes by Dušan Ogrin and their analysis through statistical methods. The purpose of the article is to demonstrate what kind of image of the landscape this book creates. The goal is to design/formulate a methodology for photograph interpretation, especially to select the indicators and their categories as well as the criteria for a quantitative photograph evaluation. Using these methods, the appearance of the landscapes is analysed according to the individual indicators, placing special emphasis on surface form as the most important landscape element.

There has been often argued that the main reason for this situation lays in structural imbalances, which were not addressed in time, and for doing this we paid and will pay our contribution costly. The paper highlights one of the structural aspects of the Slovenian economy, namely the regional differences in occupational structure and changes that occurred in this regard in the period 2000-2011. The results show that there are significant regional differences in the structure of occupational groups in Slovenia that have not changed much during the inspected period. The only major exception is Pomurje region, which at that time increased structural gap against other parts of the country.

A survey among the local people and tourists was carried out in KPG. Potentials for development and sustainable development, basing on the results of the survey, are described and evaluated. Goričko Landscape Park is facing a number of development problems which derive from its position near the border, traffic and economic isolation, specific natural restrictions etc. The local people were asked what they thought were development problems in their region. Judging from the answers we collected, the biggest drawbacks in the area are the following: discouraging situation in farming, poor infrastructure and demographical problems. Despite some natural disadvantages Goričko is one of the most agricultural areas in Slovenia. One fifth of the local inhabitants is dependent on farming, even t...

They are still largely dependent on traditional economic activities (exploiting natural resources, agriculture, forestry, etc.), which remain the main source of income and employment opportunities. They are left vulnerable in these times of climate instability and are often dependent on financial aid from the EU or the domestic support policies. At the same time, these are also areas where the locals are holders of a rich culture and cultural heritage, deeply rooted and expressed in a rich territorial capital. Consequently, the cultural values have the potential to become a successful tool for the social and economic development of the rural communities. The main goal of this publication is to present the ways of cultural value management that involves the local community and invites new development impulses, while contributing to the preservation of their culture and their empowerment. The recent development paradigms increasingly mention it as a key driver of economic growth and development of cities, regions and the advanced market economies in general. There is a lot of discussion about creativity in relation to the people with a creative occupation recently. Empirical studies have shown that the spatial distribution of people with a creative occupation is uneven in terms of regional distribution and level of urbanization respectively. An important role in attracting creative workforce to or retaining it in a certain environment is played by different location factors. In this paper the spatial distribution of people with a creative occupation according to place of residence is shown and the reasons for this situation are highlighted in the case of Gorenjska region.

While it has been already stated that educated and more creative workforce has been moving out of the country recently and that incoming migrants are mostly low-skilled workers from the former Yugoslavian republics, the content of this article refers mainly to internal migration. After completion of the analytical work it can be summarized that the inhabitants in the creative occupations in Slovenia are very immobile and by this criterion quite similar to other occupational groups. If we use the same criterion to compare them with inhabitants in creative occupations from abroad, we can conclude that they are most similar to those living in the southern and eastern Europe, and which are considered to be among the least mobile on the old continent. Further analyzes showed that the inhabitants in creative occupations that live in more developed regions generally intensely migrate and are also more willing to relocate. Both characteristics are equally valid for the more urbanized settlements.

Two groups of areas have formed: central and peripheral areas. These kinds of effects of landscape development are apparent in the demographic structure, the settlement image, land use, infrastructure equipment, etc. Slovenia has been paying considerable attention to peripheral and less developed rural areas for quite a few decades, mostly through research work and the authorities’ endeavours to boost their economic development. The measures for defining these kinds of areas have been altered a few times; however, the same regions were usually classified as the problem areas. One of these is Suha krajina (literal English translation: dry landscape), characterized by its remoteness from the main transport axes and development centres, as well as by its karst terrain with less favourable conditions for agriculture. The article presents some of the main social-economic characteristics of peripheral rural areas in Slovenia. Special emphasis is placed on Suha krajina, where intense field work was carried out to study the demographic and landscape processes that remain poorly documented or wholly unknown to the official statistics.

In this case the accessibility was defined as the travel time which the inhabitants of Slovene settlements spend driving their cars to the nearest regional centre. The results show areas of various levels of accessibility and the regionalization process of Slovenia according to the criterion of transport accessibility. With the help of statistical correlation analysis we also determined the measure of correlation of the accessibility factor to regional centres with the laying out of major transport routes and the diversity of the surface.

The presented land use changes analysis bases on old analogue (sheets of paper) and metrically poor spatial data layers. Historical maps are commonly the most important database for various spatial analyses of the land use as well as historical landscapes, urban development, influences of the economy development, toponymes changes, etc. The most important and complex part in using old data is its acquisition, including homogenisation, and the analysis itself. Principles for different case study areas are similar on the whole, but unpredictable nature of old datasets makes them quite unique. Major drawbacks are uncommon map legends, different cartography techniques, and poor knowledge of projections used. Spatial analyses were performed at two different scales, approximately 1:25,000 and 1:5000. Time series land use data was acquired and adapted with reverse editing method from georeferenced maps and aerial data, using the Corine land cover nomenclature. Old cartographic techniques were analysed and georeferencing and mosaicking methodology established. Spatial analyses are based on land use changes from the end of the 18th century until today.

The present report discusses the results of the first stage of the research, which aims to provide an overview of the characteristics and geography of industry in Europe and within the five countries involved in the project (Slovenia, Romania, Finland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom). It seeks to answer the following three – interrelated – research questions: 1. What are the characteristics and performance of industrial regions in Europe? 2. What are the characteristics and performance of small- and medium-sized industrial towns in Slovenia, Romania, Finland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom? 3. What similarities and differences can be identified between small- and medium-sized industrial towns in these countries, and how does this relate to trends at the European level?
