This volume presents women warriors and hero cults from a number of cultures since the early modern period. The first truly global study of women warriors, individual chapters examine figures such as Joan of Arc in Cairo, revenging daughters in Samurai Japan, a transgender Mexican revolutionary and WWII Chinese spies.

Exploring issues of violence, gender fluidity, memory and nation-building, the authors discuss how these real or imagined female figures were constructed and deployed in different national and transnational contexts.
Divided into four parts, they explore how women warriors and their stories were created, consider the issue of the violent woman, discuss how these female figures were gendered, and highlight the fate of women warriors who live on. The chapters illustrate the ways in which female fighters have figured in nation-building stories and in the ordering or re-ordering of gender politics, and give the history of women fighters a critical edge. Exploring women as military actors, women after war, and the strategic use of women's stories in national narratives, this intellectually innovative volume provides the first global treatment of women warriors and their histories.
This essay presents a friendly and supportive comment on Woolf’s timely and thought-provoking article, “Come and See the Poor People: The Pursuit of Exotica." It is also intended to broaden and sharpen his critique.

In 2004, the British journal Social History published a special issue on modern Spain. This was, to my knowledge, an unprecedented event. My contribution was a short report entitled «Spanish historians and the English-speaking world» in which I looked at the place of modern Spain in European history, primarily in North America, and the role of historians from Spain. I started the piece by referring to a «cuarenta principales» song from the 1970s, «I never been to Spain», to make the underlyin...

This encyclopedia documents the presence and impact of nationalized cultural consciousness in European nationalism. It tracks how intellectuals, historians, philologists, novelists, poets, painters, folklorists, and composers, in an intensely collaborative transnational network, articulated the national identities and aspirations that would go on to determine European history and politics, with effects that are still felt today. Edited by Joep Leerssen, in cooperation with almost 350 authors from dozens of countries, this encyclopedia gives a clear idea of the intricate (transnational and intermedial) networks and entanglements in which all aspects of Romantic Nationalism are connected. The online Open Access edition of The Encyclopedia of Romantic Nationalism in Europe is available here.

intrusions into the war on the Entente side? The German deportations of unemployed Belgians is treated not as a facet of the Great War (where both sides of the conflict routinely engaged in deportations and forced labor efforts), but with an eye toward the Second World War and the Nazi era. A second scholarly work is needed to provide context and balance to the German occupation efforts in Belgium. I would have added more detail on the strategic realities that the Germans faced on the Western Front. Miller has the acumen to do so; he does a good job of highlighting the British concerns about supplying food and resources to Belgium while the country was under German control. More attention to German sources, especially in regard to the establishment of the German logistical lines behind the front lines, which, naturally, were situated not only in Germany but also deep in occupied Belgium, would go a long way toward providing more depth and balance to the narrative. Overall, the questions I have about Miller’s German sources and context do not detract from the main focus of his book. I recommend WWI Crusaders for its detail on the American and Belgian relief operations, which is extensive and almost exhaustive. Miller should be applauded, because his research on the relief efforts and the occupation of Belgium is an important addition to the literature on the Great War. Miller also helps chart the rise of Herbert Hoover in American politics and provides necessary detail about the application of his industrial background and leadership skills. This book will be useful to professional academics for its attention to the Belgian situation and the American relief response, and the narrative is designed to be engaging for a general reading audience. As he gains experience writing historical works, especially about the German war effort in the Great War, I look forwards to seeing more from Jeffrey Miller in the future.

EnglishThis article uses recent findings from studies of women warrior and national heroes as an enduring and complex transnational and global phenomenon to re-examine the figure of the iconic Spanish example of such a figure: Agustina de Aragon. Specifically, it explores how and why she, and not others, was turned into a national hero, how Spaniards managed the subversion of gender roles that a woman warrior represented, the effect of her long outliving the events of 1808 that made her famous, and the extent to and ways in which her figure as a woman warrior circulated beyond Spain.

Across the Atlantic world, the construction of liberal and republican political systems and societies was accompanied by the need to define the gender dimensions of the new order. Just what the age of revolution meant for women has been a longstanding question.Did it kill off a recognized public role for—at least—elitewomen, or did women continue to have a public role despite their banishment from the formal institutions of politics? Were the new societies structured around a strict public/ private dichotomy in which women were consigned to the purdah of domesticity, or were their public spheres sufficiently capacious for women to stake out a domain, either as individuals or collectively? With regard to Spain, there is now a substantial and sophisticated literature that has given us a much more textured and complex picture of the creation of a liberal state and society there during the first half of the nineteenth century. The old vision of a failed and backward country has been replaced by one that sees a real liberal revolution that brought about a profound and meaningful rupture from the ancien régime. This revisionist interpretation has extended to concepts of gender and the place of women. As historians have looked beyond prescrip-

This article explores the ways in which historians have thought about biography as a genre of writing about the past and how these attitudes have changed over the last fifty years or so, from skepticism and even hostility to increasing acceptance and even advocacy. It also examines some of the ways in which biography itself has evolved and the contribution of historians to this evolution, before concluding with an example from the author’s forthcoming biography of the 19th-century Spanish military and political figure Baldomero Espartero (1793-1879).***O que os historiadores realmente pensam sobre a biografia?***Este artigo examinava as varias caminhas que os historiadores pensava sobre o válor do gênero da biografia nas considerações do nosso passado, e a mudança nas manieras de ver biografia entre nos ultimos cinquentos anos: atitudes alterava de cetecismo e oposição ao aceitação, confiança, e promoçåo da biografia a un gênero respeitável da História. a munitioneer for the army of Italy between 1690 and 1698. There is only one article on the medieval period, by Elisabeth Nortier on the eleventh century, whereas there are three contributions on the seventeenth century, one on the eighteenth century, and three each on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In his introduction to the volume, Michel Brugui~re cited Jean Bouvier’s view that among professional historians in France there was ’une rdpugnance’ for the study of state finance and fiscality. The view seems to be borne out by the relative paucity of high-quality research on the subject as distinct from the prosopography of financiers, where there has been an outstanding contribution (we need mention only the names of Françoise Bayard, Daniel Dessert, Guy Chaussinand-Nogaret, Michel Brugui~re and Pierre-François Pinaud). Fundamental work remains to be done, particularly on the statistics of state finance and fiscality, and the economic consequences of fiscal policy. This is the purpose of the European Science Foundation programme on the origins of the modern state (section B, Economic systems and state finance) and of the British Academyand ESRC-assisted European State Finance Database Project. It is to be hoped that these programmes can be coordinated to prevent needless duplication of effort, and to enhance a most welcome initiative on the part of the ComitL4 pour I’histoire economique et financière de la France.

Internationalization has come to be seen as an innate good in the discussion of higher education. Universities are expected to be increasingly "international" and participate in a global knowledge economy. But what does internationalization mean for university faculty, students and administrators? This innovative book brings together leading international and Canadian scholars to discuss internationalization in terms of federal and provincial government policy and institutional practices. Its contributors focus on issues that have received almost no previous attention in the literature, including the implications of internationalization for teaching and learning, conflicting agendas for internationalization, ethical concerns, reviewing the Canadian experience from an international perspective and looking at internationalization in the broader context of Canadian higher education policy. Written for a wide audience, this is the first book to offer a comprehensive, multidisciplinary analysis of internationalization that includes contributions from critical scholars, government officials and university leaders.

The concept of global citizenship appears to have a particular affinity for Canada and Canadians. Lloyd Ax worthy, who was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1996 to 2000, played a key role in the international ban on land mines and developing the doctrine of right to protect, began his recent book with a paean to his compatriots’ vocation as global citizens:Canadians are on the road to global citizenship. Increasingly, in work, travel, education and in personal and political engagement, the world is our precinct, with international trade, technology and business driving much of our global interests. But there is also a political, cultural and even moral dimension to our emerging role in global society. (Axworthy, 2003, p. 1)And when the distinguished professor of international law Michael Byers (2007) asked in the subtitle of his book: What is Canada for? his answer was that its role, as a country, is to be a global citizen:[Canada] achieves its greatest successes when it charts a path that is not determined solely by economic factors…a truly great country should be about… addressing global developments, such as climate change, that threaten the safety and well-being of all. And it should be about improving the lot of human beings everywhere for the simple reason that doing so is right and just. (Byers, 2007, p. 240-241)For her part, Jennifer Welsh generally eschews the term global citizenship, but proposes that Canada aspire to something very similar: to be a model citizen:[F]irst, it must show others what a liberal democracy looks like in the post-September-11 era; second, it must work side by side with others in less stable parts of the world, demonstrating how they might create the foundations for healthier societies… [This model] also suggests activism: model citizens continually strive to make the commons more just. (Welsh, 2005, p. 26)One particularly interesting aspect of Welsh’s vision is that it goes beyond government to include individual Canadians, and particularly younger Canadians, whose international engagements demonstrate that they are “inherently internationalist” and “already at home in the world” (Welsh, 2004, p. 34; Welsh 2005, pp. 28, 239-240).1
