The Italian Archaeological Mission in Iraqi Kurdistan (MAIKI) of Sapienza Uni- versity of Rome ai... more The Italian Archaeological Mission in Iraqi Kurdistan (MAIKI) of Sapienza Uni- versity of Rome aims to study thehistorical, linguistic and cultural development of the Kurdish region. MAIKI activities are focused on the study of the archaeologi- cal stratigraphy of the Erbil Citadel and the Sasanian monument of Paikuli and its sur- roundings. The present article introduces the MAIKI research projects in these sites, themethodologies, themain problems and thepreliminary results obtained so far. Regarding the Erbil Citadel, MAIKI is involved, together with the High Commission for the Erbil Citadel (HCECR), in the study of the archaeological stratigraphy of the Erbil Citadel through the analysis of recent geophysical surveys and the study of the archaeological materials from the excavations carried out by the HCECR. Concerning Paikuli, the study of the site and its bilingual inscription has been flanked by the compilation of a new archaeological map of the surroundings of the Sasanian monument along the highway that links the cities of Darbandikhan and Chamchamal. Moreover, new eth- nographic research aimed at studying the religious heritage of the region and a topographic study of the surveyed area have been launched. The analysis of aerial and satellite imagery, the field-walk campaigns and the study of the collected archaeological finds have provided us with significant data for the understanding of the history of the landscape and the settlements in the area. These researches will hopefully play a major role in enhancing the efforts to safeguard and protect the Cultural Heritage of the areas.

As well, a more careful and sensitive reconsideration of archives and newly collected archaeological data allow today a more detailed reconstruction of the Egyptian Late Antique and Medieval landscape. The ultimate goal of PAThs project is to build new bridges between these two disciplines by creating an online atlas able to represent Coptic literature in its archaeological context, testing methodological frameworks and building IT tools based on network technologies. We believe that information technology, widely used since long time by both disciplines, can provide a common ground for experimentation and fruitful collaboration: PAThs information system discussed in this paper has proven to be an important test bench for the development of new methodologies and the improvement of the studies.

The monumental fortifications of the Hellenistic city, built in polygonal and trapezoidal massive masonry, are by far the most impressive features of the site, and have attracted the attention of scholars. These pertectly fit the steep slopes of the isolated hill, a natural control point of the surrounding area, known in antiquity as Kestrine and located between ancient Chaonia and Thesprotia. Since 2021 a new joint archacological mission of Sapienza University of Rome and Albanian Institute for Archaeology has started new field activities that since their inception have contributed in shedding new light on the archaeology of the site. New technologies for the topographical survey and the documentation are being deployed to offer a diachronic view of the site and an integrated comprehension of both archive and newly acquired data. The methodologies and the first results of the fieldwork are the main focus of this paper.

This environment has remained sparsely documented, and a lack of excavations and of stratigraphic data has given rise to frequently weak hypotheses regarding the age of these areas.
The Upper Agri valley is located in the SW inland area of Basilicata, and cuts the region in the ... more The Upper Agri valley is located in the SW inland area of Basilicata, and cuts the region in the WE direction, so since ancient times it is a main route which is fundamental to connect the Ionian coast and the Tyrrenian coast. Generated from the creation of the Southern Apennines mountains, it’s difersified in the morphologi- cal aspects in the flat western area and terraced eastern area. In Pleistocene era, in fact, the valley was a lake- form basin, which progressively deminished by erosion at the river flow barrage. The Upper Agri valley has archaeological presences from the Ancient Neolithic Age, and is densely populated from the Bronze Age. The major archaeological evidences are from Ellenistic-Lucanian Age, when local people, with Greek influ- ences, lived on the top of hill fortified sites to control the district. This settlements distribution is completed by many small farms, residences and sacred areas in the low valley. The first Roman presences are from the end of IV century BC, when the Lucanian people founded Grumentum, the most important town in the valley. Instead of the pre-existed hill sites, the town is placed on a valley floor terrace, with an ortogonal urbanistic scheme, patterned from the greek tradition and from the influence of the first contacts with Ro- man people. Since this is an inland area, the romanization is a slow process, ended after the Social War, when Grumentum obtains the statute of Roman colony. The city will remain the focal point of the region during the imperial age until the late antiquity. Starting from the High Middle Age, following a common process, the city loses its centrality, and the slow abandonment is associated with the birth of new hilltop control centres, the medieval villages. The area is been studied by archaeologists especially for what concerns the urbanistic aspects of Grumentum. However, the landscape, except from some archaeological monitoring works of the Soprintendenza, is never been studied systematically. In this background is been built the works of the Ancient Topography chair of University of Bologna (prof. Pier Luigi Dall’Aglio, prof Enrico Giorgi). They started, in cooperation with Sapienza – University of Rome, a research project purposing to rebuild the an- cient settlements layout and the landscape evolution through the centuries. From 2012, we coordinate on the field some multidisciplinar researchs, with some archaeological surveys in the municipalities of Grumento Nova and Viggiano, and some geoarchaeological surveys (geophysics, soil tests), for the identification of the geomorphological units preferential for the ancient settlements, and to the reconstruction of the paleo- environmental aspects. During the archaeological survey campaigns we found a series of sites: on the hilltop and on the hillsides some fortified settlements have been dated mainly at the Ellenistic-Lucanian age and at the Middle age. On the valley floor, we identified some archaeological sites, chiefly recognized as scattered areas of pottery (sometimes together with some walls and structures), dated from the Ellenistic-Lucanian age to the Roman Late Imperial age. The tight net of Lucanian and Roman Republican small farms seems to be subjected to a decrease in the Roman Imperial age: about this period we found some extended scattered artifacts sites, that may be identified as big villas. Every site is been recorded in a webgis database. Moreover, some morphological units have been recognized thanks to the analysis at stetoscope of the aerial photos tak- en from periods in which the anthropization effect wasn’t as strong as now: moreover, the alluvial activity of the main rivers who cut the valley was strong. In the end, we acquired data along the fluvial axis of Agri using the electrical tomography. This metholodogy is been employed not only in the archaeological sites, but also in areas close to the river, in which we found some paleo-canals that testify the river flow evolution of Agri.
The Activities of the Italian Archaeological Mission in Iraqi Kurdistan (MAIKI) of the University... more The Activities of the Italian Archaeological Mission in Iraqi Kurdistan (MAIKI) of the University of Rome are aimed at the study of the archaeological, historical, linguistic and cultural development of the Kurd- ish region through a wide historical period. MAIKI represent the consequence of an enduring experience which, since 2006, involves both Italian and Kurdish institutions, with the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The activities of MAIKI started focusing on the analysis of the Sasanid site of Paikuli. In the last years the archaeological and philological investigation were flanked by an accurate survey of the area between the Dyala and Basara rivers, around the main road that connects the city of Chamchamal to Darbandikhan, in order to implement a complete and updated archaeological map of the entire territory. The still ongoing activities include a survey of the area, a preliminary study of the main archaeological sites and distribution patterns, a detailed analysis of the archaeological finds that are being collected in all sites and a complete census of the modern villages; this last topic is strictly related to an ethno-anthropological study of the area. The area has been poorly studied up to present. Only some larger sites have been reported, but 143 not exhaustively described, by an Iraqi study that dates back to 1970. Before planning any on-field activity a preliminary analysis of the area, based on the survey of the available satellite imagery, has been accomplished; nevertheless, satellite imagery interpretation is hardly datable and usually difficult to delineate from the typological point of view. Furthermore, our first survey campaigns revealed that this territory has recently undergone radical changes. The Al-Anfal campaign conducted by Saddam Hussein between 1986 and 1989 has deeply changed the settlement pattern of this area; destruction of the villages and new constructions have thoroughly changed the picture drawn by the previous studies. All anomalies highlighted by the remote sensing analysis and all archeological sites reported by previous bibliography are now newly visited and documented, according to the most up-to-date methodologies. Site positions are being recorded using GPS, new photographic documentation is being produced and a very accurate description of all evidences is being compiled. For each site, moreover, surface archaeological material is being collected and dedicated campaigns for its study and cataloguing are being organized. The preliminary analysis of the pottery has outlined a very wide chronological range, from the fourth millennium BC to the present days. All data and results are organized in GIS and collaborative database systems, able to integrate the simultaneous work of specialist of different fields and areas. The most recent anthropological study will finally help the archaeological team in better focusing the impact that the recent traumatic events caused in the preservation of the cultural heritage and, on the other hand, will supply a rich documentation for some important topics that the team wants to further investigate, including relationship between man and territory, local economy, migration policies and religious practices.

The dramatic events in Afghanistan (the Soviet invasion in 1979, the civil war and the Taliban rule) and the recent Italian economic difficulties have caused serious harms to this rich and unique archaeological record. All that gave the cue to an operation of rescue and enhancement led by the University of Naples “L'Orientale”. With the financial support of the Gerda Henkel Foundation a new research project started, with the aim of recovering the knowledge acquired from the excavations at Ghazni and the subsequent researches. The core is a collaborative web-based database, able to manage all the information (detailed scientific descriptions, metadata on the excavations, bibliographic data) on the most important findings (about 3,600 items). A rich corpus of digital images (about 6,700), connected to the records of the archive, completes the system. The webdatabase is based on BraDypUS, a relational archiving platform released under an Open Source license (MIT). The scientific database has been implemented with a web portal, created through an innovative Content Management System (BraDyCMS), also released with MIT license. The ultimate goal is to develop a core of high scientific value (the central database) and an effective tool of dissemination to large segments of non-specialist public.

The on-field archaeological activities have much accelerated in various areas of Epirus in the la... more The on-field archaeological activities have much accelerated in various areas of Epirus in the last decades, and are producing an important progress of our knowledge of many aspects of the region, such as settlement distribution and land occupation, the definition of the urban landscapes, the organisation of defensive strategies, territory control and fortification, the funerary and religious spheres, etc. Lesser attention, considering the available publications, has been put on the analysis of the residential complexes, and this is not due to the lack of archaeological evidence, which is sometimes quite exceptional. Houses of different typologies, scale and prestige have been excavated and documented in recent years in large, fully urban centres such as Phoinike and Antigonea, and in minor sites such as Çuka e Ajtoit (Cestria). The rural landscape, as well, preserves evidences of small settlements equipped with monumental towers and other fortification elements. These have traditionally been interpreted as fortified farmhouses, underlining their economical function connected to agricultural and pastoral intensive exploitation of the chora. Among these stand out the structures preserved at Malathrea, a Hellenistic tetrapyrgos enlarged in Roman times and those of Mesopotamos near Ephyra in Thesprotia, erroneously interpreted for many years as the famous sanctuary of the Nekyomanteion. Exceptional architectural models, forged and diffused by the Macedonian dynasty are at the base of many of these residences that seem to integrate ‘palatial’ shapes and functions.
The workshop aims at offering a discussion table to share new excavation and research results and fostering a fruitful dialog on models, functions, chronologies, transformations and interpretation. It aims at setting the ground for an integrated understanding of the phenomenon of residential architecture in Hellenistic and Roman Epirus.

Yet, information produced by akin disciplines such as philology, literature, social and religious history—fields of studies that are familiar since long time to digital technologies—has rarely been taken into account. It is tempting, thus, to consider the digital environment as the new methodological common ground able to put again together disciplines that share goals and objectives, but that has walked along different paths. It is not a matter to over-simplify what has been done so far, but to try to provide digital information systems and networks tools able to establish new connections and hopefully new knowledge. Late Antique and Early Medieval Egypt provides a formidable and extremely rich context, both from the archaeological and literary production and dissemination point of view, particularly suitable for such an experimentation. Indeed, the Atlas is meant to supply a thorough description of the physical and cultural landscape of Egypt between the 3rd and 11th centuries, by illustrating in details the archeological landscape where the Coptic literature was born, circulated and propagated, and—in a second step—by integrating the archaeological data with precious information that manuscripts and text provide. In order to do this it is necessary to further bend and adapt well-known tools like GIS and databases to meet new needs, pointing out and trying to resolve new methodological challenges.

Almost nothing is known about the location of its necropolis, “frequented” even in recent years by clandestine excavations. From the investigations of the Italian archaeological mis- sion directed by L.M. Ugolini, who excavated some tombs in 1929, to the most recent field research of the joint Italian-Albanian mission involving the Sapienza University of Rome and the Archaeological Institute of Tirana, this contribution wants to offer an exhaustive and updated overview of the state of our knowledge on the funerary culture of the site
ARCHEO.FOSS XIV 2020. Open software, hardware, processes, data and formats in archaeological research, 2021
The digitisation and vectorisation of archaeological/architectonic graphical legacy documentation... more The digitisation and vectorisation of archaeological/architectonic graphical legacy documentation is a step that any archaeological project deals with and solves by following its own specific requirements. The article introduces the Simple Vectorisation Protocol (SVP), a GIS-based protocol for acquiring in the digital domain sketches and maps by following a very concise yet rich syntax, able to reverse engineering published and archive data. The result is a multidimensional dataset, ready to be used in specific projects, easy to publish on online repositories and highly re- usable and remixable, while still maintaining a feature-level bibliographic reference to the original source.
ArcheoFOSS XIV 2020: Open software, hardware, processes, data and formats in archaeological resea... more ArcheoFOSS XIV 2020: Open software, hardware, processes, data and formats in archaeological research collects the proceedings of the fourteenth ArcheoFOSS international conference, held online due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The book gathers seventeen papers on three principal topics, the main sessions of the conference: use and application of free/libre and open-source (FLOS) tools in archaeology; creation, use and promotion of open data and open formats in archaeology; and development and customization of FLOS software and hardware solutions for cultural heritage. Forty-one scholars of very diverse age, academic affiliation and geographic location, but all actively involved in the promotion of FLOS culture, open data and open science in digital archaeology and humanities, contribute. The volume is completed by a critical analysis of the contribution of these important annual meetings to the scientific and cultural activity of the ArcheoFOSS community. The opportunity offered by the pandemic-related difficulties to widen the geographical scope of the conference has been further boosted by the decision to adopt the English language for most of the papers, with the hope that this will extend the work of the ArcheoFOSS community far beyond the Italian national borders.

These researches will hopefully play a major role in enhancing the efforts to safeguard and protect the Cultural Heritage of the areas.

not exhaustively described, by an Iraqi study that dates back to 1970.
PAThs. Tracking Papyrus and Parchment Paths: An Archaeological Atlas of Coptic Literature. Literary Texts in their Geographical Context: Production, Copying, Usage, Dissemination and Storage
Although the Archaeological Atlas of Coptic Literature is still under construction, the "Paths" group considers important to share already its "philosophy" so that, when ready, users are aware of how it has been conceived.
For this reason, the "PAThs" Mission Statement will be continuously updated as soon as new "products" are ready and new methodological and scientific reflections have been carried out.
