Global warming is aggravating by the day. Recently, the year 2023 has been identified by the United Nations' World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) as the hottest year on record globally. The WMO also expects that, due to the impact of El Niño, 2024 is likely to be hotter than 2023. Somalia, South Sudan and other countries in the Horn of Africa are bearing the brunt, having experienced the worst drought in 40 years, followed by extreme weather shocks such as storms and floods. The result was a large number of crop failures and a spread of infectious diseases, causing local people to face severe hunger and health problems. Africa is currently the region with the largest increase in the number of hungry people, with a total of 281 million hungry people, or an average of one in five people suffering hunger.
A recent survey published by World Vision ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) shows that climate change has put communities in a very vulnerable situation, especially farmers and herders who, having been affected by ongoing natural disasters and conflicts, have lost their livelihoods and have been forced to migrate. Many hungry children are in urgent need of rescue due to chronic hunger and severe malnutrition.
Funds raised from this year's Skip-A-Meal will support World Vision to provide food assistance, medical treatment and water supply facilities for impoverished children and families in South Sudan and Somalia. Join us to show your care and extend a helping hand now!
2-year-old Asma has been following her mother on a 150-km journey before arriving at a camp for displaced persons in Somalia. They have not brought a lot with them, because they have already lost everything when all of their seven camels and 108 sheep died of either thirst or hunger in a persistent drought.
“I am afraid my children will die from extreme hunger,” says Asma’s mother.
