Dagon/Dagan is not a fish
[edit]Hi Infovarius! I saw you asked what's wrong. I removed the picture of the Oannes because it's connection to the god Dagon was disputed. Dagon or Dagan (for the A->O see the Canaanite shift) was the Semitic god of cereal (dagan in Hebrew) and agriculture, lord of the land. The similarity between his name and the Hebrew word דג (dag, meaning fish) created a tradition from the medieval age of an incorrect interpretation of Dagan as a fish god. The sources are "Towards the image of Dagon, the god of the Philistines" and James Barr's translation of Philo of Byblos (I have more sources for that in Hebrew if it helps). Therefore, the image of the Oannes as Dagon missleads the reader. פעמי-עליון (talk) 22:29, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
- Infovarius, thank you for your last edits, but I think this picture should be totaliy removed from this page. פעמי-עליון (talk) 22:59, 25 December 2022 (UTC)
- At first you should remove this picture from all Wikipedia editions... Otherwise there's change of coming it back. Anyway, deprecated rank shows that this is a mistake and prevents from using the picture. --Infovarius (talk) 21:47, 27 December 2022 (UTC)
- Infovarius, I am not familiar with the meaning of rank in Wikidata, id it means that the picture is a mistake that's fine. about the other Wikipedias, I don't think I can edit in Greek or Arabic Wikipedia without even being able to explain my edit in their languages; if this practice is common, tell me and I'll do it. פעמי-עליון (talk) 22:26, 27 December 2022 (UTC)
- In en-wp there's also this picture (you can read why), so this is the problem - it can be presented in Wikipedia articles with some comment... --Infovarius (talk) 11:18, 30 December 2022 (UTC)
- You are right, but there is a difference - the picture in English Wikipedia is presented in a special section, in the end of the article, with explanation (as you said) that it's "identified in accordance with early 20th century scholarship as Dagan", while in other Wikipedias at the top of the article as Dagan himself. I will try to be helped by people who know these languages to remove the picture from the top of the article. פעמי-עליון (talk) 12:09, 30 December 2022 (UTC)
