humans of the internet, I am giving you all permission to put down that book. the one you are reading that everyone else loves? the one that someone swears you'll adore? the one you actively dislike reading?

you can put it down.

there are so many books in the world, you can't love them all. and that's okay. maybe you want to like it, maybe you feel obligated to read it, maybe you think you'll like the end more.

it's okay. walk away from this one. find another you'll love. it's what you deserve.

reading is for you and what you want.

one of the reasons i use libraries for reading so much is because the books come with a deadline, and i either read it on the deadline or i dont and it takes a lot of the stress away from reading for me

So I do a lot of book suggestion with my public libraries because, well, I'm a big reader and I can't buy all of the books, no matter how much i might want to.

Anyway, it always completely baffles me when, with series - especially when its in ebook form where you can see fairly easily on Libby whether or not there is another installment after the one you're currently reading - *I* have to suggest the next book for it to be picked up.

And not in a 'why is the librarian not buying it' way, but rather in a 'why are people not asking for it????'

For exemple, I've been reading a series of like 5-6 books total. I suggested my library get the first ebook, suggestion got accepted, i read the book and liked it well enough. About 10-ish people were in the hold queue. Of course that doesn't mean they actually liked it but whatever.

I suggested the second book, and because of the nature of ebooks reservation, some people got to read it before me. Ok fine. I read it, about 6-7 people are on the hold queue when i finish it.

Guess what? No one asked for the third book.

For EVERY book in the series, i had to ask for the next one and i'm just...

For people to read it before me, they had to have an alert on the book so they would know when it becomes available at once. Cuz obviously I have those alerts, but even just checking 5 minutes after the notification, there would be at least 2-3 people with a hold on the book already.

And its not even a 'oh, the library will get the ebooks at a certain time every months/few months so that's why it wasn't available yet'

I finished the second to last book of the series recently. It had been available since like october-ish. I had actually started back then, but since I'm not a fan of reading ebooks, I couldnt finish the book in time, so into the hold queue I went.

I know that public library. I know how often they get their ebook. If anyone had asked for the last book, it would be available already.

It wasn't.

Do people not know they can suggest books? Is the process too obscure for them?

Anyway, there is no point to this post except to say, my good peeps, you can make books (or dvds or games or whatever kind of item your public library offer) suggestion! You usually can do it online!

If you can't find where exactly, usually just googling 'purchase suggestion' or 'reccomand a title' with the name of your public library will get you to the right page

And if you're still not sure, you should ask your librarian, they'll be happy to tell you how!

As a librarian, not only do we love suggestions in general (guaranteed reader! yay!), if you realize that we are missing the next book in a series, PLEASE mention it*. You are not being a bother; you are saving the tail of some poor overworked collection development librarian who is trying (and failing) to keep two dozen really similar romantasy series straight**.

*recent series. If it's a series from 1975, you're probably gonna have to Interlibrary Loan that one and hope for the best.

**definitely not drawn from personal experience. Nope.

I trained as a librarian here in europe and out of the three libraries i did on-site training at, not a single one even mentioned readers could request books to be purchased. So yeah, i absolutely believe a ton of readers out there don’t know it’s a possibility.

And it’s always appreciated by the writers.

I dunno how it works elsewhere but at my local library they also have a request/suggestion limit per year. Pls help your fellow local fans by requesting a book in a series.

My library doesn’t do it :(, I’ve asked and they just looked at me like I was stupid and said they don’t offer it.

I thought the notify me button on Libby was to let your library know you were interested in reading the book so they were more likely to buy it.

Apparently there's a readathon called Middle Grade March! I found out about it after I had already put together my March TBR, so I won't be participating, but I figured it would be a good time to recommend some of my faves!

I actually don't like owning books I haven't read. the more I think about it, the more pressure it is to not only read them but like them. and it's stressful. most of the books I own that I haven't read I got on major sale or from friends. I just like using libraries most because there's less commitment. I'd rather buy the book after falling in love with it.

constantly reminding myself to remove myself from the works of fiction i love because it is okay if people dont like them, that does not mean they dont like me, and everyone has different taste in media, which is valid and should be embraced

just know, telling me a book series "gets good" in book 2, 3, 4 etc is never going to convince me to finish a series. a. i finish very few series in the first place even when i like book 1. b. i dnf books in the middle no problem so dnf'ing a series is no sweat to me. c. if im not having fun in a world, i will never give it more time. the middle should be the best part of the story because its the longest part. and d. ive already made up my mind, you are not going to change it.

i have too many books i want to read to read books im not enjoying.

actually lifechangingly good books will be on goodreads with a 3.6 star rating at most with people fighting for their lives trying to be comedians in the reviews section while meanwhile the worst dogshit youve ever read in your life will have a 4.7
