since I’ve seen nobody in the notes bring it up: this isn’t a case of obliviousness to each other. in fact, it’s quite the opposite.

the original games take place in japan, so that will be the context any of the dialogue here is translated from. here they’re saying they have no plans to marry, almost in a reassuring way. seems odd right? especially wright’s line of no plans to, “even if I wanted to.”

money doesn’t seem to be a massive problem for wright even if he’s not massively affluent, and a marriage wouldn’t hinder his job. so even if he wanted to, why wouldn’t he?

the answer is simple and also incredibly sad. gay marriage isn’t legally recognized in japan. which means that to get married in japan means to marry a woman and have kids.

that’s the only option. you can figure out a way to justify this in the localization setting of japanifornia, but this was written first with the context of japan in mind.

now you could interpret this other ways like them just not wanting to marry due to dedication to work, but if they were truly dedicated to work then edgeworth wouldn’t constantly risk his career for wright. not to mention neither of them have shown interest in women in recent games, so wright’s statement about not planning even if he wanted to makes no sense in the context of just not needing marriage. why would he want to if he had nobody to marry?

and the way they say it as almost a reassurance–wright getting shocked at the thought edgeworth might want to marry and asking if he’s okay, edgeworth reassuring him it’s okay, he has no plans, asking wright in turn, him saying he won’t even if he wants to (implying that if he wanted to marry someone, he can’t), wright noting how edgeworth thinks of marrying A WOMAN specifically since that’s the only option, and the way they say it so dramatically like it’s a personal stake for both.

in the context of japan, they’re telling each other they’re not going to go off with some woman and marry her and have children. they’re saying they have no plans to leave where they are and start something else.

it’s a promise to each other that they won’t leave the other for a traditional, easier life.

it’s both romantic, and incredibly bittersweet when you peel back the subtext and remember they’re inquiring about the other having a traditional heterosexual marriage and both of them assuring each other that won’t happen.

Miles was exhausted. The campaign had been long and harrowing, ending with a merciless siege of several weeks. They'd eventually won the battle thanks to a desperate and risky scheme of Miles's, but they had lost so many people, and those that had survived were so exhausted that Miles nearly wondered if it had been worth it.

It had been, though. That was what all his advisors had said upon his return, congratulating him about his sagacity in his clever victory when Miles had all but begged for them to make sure, though foreign politics or better logistics, that such a painful war would not be be needed again.

Now, at last, after hours spent in that meeting, Miles was free. He dreamed of a good bath, of clean night robes and the luxury of feather pillows and soft bedsheets, but he knew he wouldn't be ready to sleep until a long time yet, too wired by the argument he'd had with his advisors – chiefly, one – and the hardships of the past few months.

So he found himself headed to one of his favourite places in the castle, the library. There was, hidden at the turn of a staircase, a little alcove there which held works by a favourite author of his; evocative poetry, philosophical plays, even a few treatises on art and political memoirs. Those books reminded him of home, of love, of the idealism he had lost in great part at his father's death, and it seemed, a little more every day since. It was where he always sought refuge when he felt too weary or too weighed down by life.

Those books, he often thought privately, for those were not musings fit to be heard by any others, had saved his life on more than one occasion.

He untied the fastening of his ceremonial cape and draped it over his arm, sighing as the weight fell of his shoulders. He would set it down on the back of a chair as he sat down in the quiet peace of the library. Or perhaps he would take the books back with him to his quarters, throw the cape on his desk to be picked up by his manservant, and settle in his favourite armchair to read by the firelight.

It turned out he did neither of those things.

So, once upon a time, in the days of the AAI2 fan translation, Edgeworth's mention (to Fender) of 'a certain attorney' (a phrase that had invariably referred, like 'that man', to a certain Mr Wright) and his words of wisdom, was immediately followed by this:

And nrmt shippers were very excited and have been quoting it at every opportunity since. Understandably.

When the official translation was released, these lines had been changed, seemingly to remove the suggestion that Phoenix was the 'attorney/man' being talked about in this moment, and only referring to Edgeworth's father.

And nrmt shippers were a bit nonplussed and wondered if it had all been a mistranslation after all, but largely understood the importance of Edgeworth snr particularly in light of the overall themes of AAI2 and didn't cry too much. It was a little disappointing though.

There has since been a patch.

Mostly to correct typos which is in itself awesome actually because there were a lot of them and it was literally my only complaint.

Also, to do this:

That Capcom cared enough to go back and restore 'That Man' to his rightful place in Edgeworth's thoughts alongside his father, and patch this back into the game is just ... not the sort of thing I had any expectation of them doing. But I'm very glad they did!
