Press Release- UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Ms. Pramila Patten, condemns the renewed offensive by the M23 with the support of the Rwandan Defence Force and expresses grave concern about the heightened risk and emerging reports of conflict-related sexual violence in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo

New York, 3 February 2025: The Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Ms. Pramila Patten, expresses grave concerns over the attacks in Goma, North Kivu and South Kivu, by the Mouvement du 23 Mars (M23) with the support of the Rwandan Defence Force (RDF), which intensified on 23 January 2025. This renewed offensive with its current expansion to South Kivu has triggered an alarming deterioration of the security situation, with reports of attacks against civilians, including conflict-related sexual violence. “These brutal attacks are a horrific reminder of the extreme vulnerability of civilians caught amid armed conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and must cease immediately. All perpetrators of such acts must be held to account for their crimes.”

New York, 3 February 2025: Four years since the military seized power from the democratically elected Government in Myanmar and plunged the country into chaos, the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Ms. Pramila Patten, strongly condemns the continued use of rape and other forms of sexual violence as a tactic of war and political repression and strategy to punish and terrorize communities across Myanmar.

UN Action Project South Sudan

This project aims to build the socio-economic resilience of survivors of conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) in Yambio, Juba and Bentiu, South Sudan. Using a survivor-centred approach, it seeks to improve access to essential medical, psychosocial and legal services through multi-sectoral collaboration and holistic support, and help build survivor’s resilience and reintegration through economic empowerment, financial inclusion, advocacy and policy reforms, and community engagement and awareness.

UN Action Sudan Project

The resurgence of devastating conflict in Sudan since April 2023 has driven more than 6.5 million people to flee their homes in search of safety & security. The conflict has left women and girls, especially, at extremely high risk of sexual violence. UN Action’s project in Sudan provides a robust emergency response focused on restoring facilities, livelihoods and the living conditions of women and girls most affected by CRSV. It does this by identifying and mitigating immediate protection risks for IDP and refugee women and girls, improving access to quality sexual and reproductive health services, and bolstering local systems to promote social cohesion and community protection in and around Western and Central Darfur.

UN Action DRC Project

This project increased access to multi-sectoral assistance, including medical, psychosocial, legal and reintegration support to survivors of CRSV and those at risk in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This initiative built the socioeconomic resilience of women involved in the DRC’s artisanal mining sector, whilst also addressing the fight against impunity on CRSV related crimes.
