Sri Lanka Journals OnLine (SLJOL) is a service to provide access to Sri Lankan published research, and increase worldwide knowledge of indigenous scholarship.
SLJOL is a database of journals published in Sri Lanka, covering the full range of academic disciplines. The objective of SLJOL is to give greater visibility to the participating journals, and to the research they convey.
Journals are selected for inclusion on SLJOL using the following criteria:
SLJOL provides information on each participating journal, including aims and scope, contact details and general information. It also provides Tables of contents and abstracts (where available) for all articles published within these journals. Many full text articles are also available.
All the material on SLJOL is free to view, search and browse, however copyright of all content is retained by the journals or authors - each journals will need to give permission for any use or re-use of the content that falls outside Fair Use.
SLJOL is not a publisher: SLJOL provides a service to the journals by hosting their content online, and actively promoting the website to encourage discovery of these titles and their articles. Individual journals are also using the website to publish their journals and they welcome submissions from registered users.

The journals are listed alphabetically, to help researchers find journals of relevance, and allow browsing of the journals.
The website has a sophisticated searching tool, to help researchers locate articles of interest and relevance to their area of study.
Email alerts also provide a reminder service, to alert researchers to newly-published issues from their selected titles.
Each journal has its own home page, where researchers can find information about the aims and scope of the journal, and information on how to submit articles to each journal. If the journal is available in print, information about how to obtain copies is also given.
Many journals publish in full text online. Others publish their full text at another website - links are provided from each article abstract page.
Researchers should also take note of the Research Support Tool which accompanies the abstracts of each article. The links from the red box to the right of each Abstract screen are designed to support the reading and use of the abstracts. Tools offered include information about the authors, quick and easy links to allow identification of further articles from other websites, definition of difficult terms using online dictionaries (simply click twice on any word in the abstract), and the automatic generation of citations to the article using "Capture Cite." We encourage you to make use of these tools to enhance your research.

Sri Lanka Journals OnLine (SLJOL) was initiated in August 2008. It is a project which was supported by (INASP). It aims to promote the awareness and use of Sri Lankan-published journals in all disciplines by providing access to tables of contents (TOCs), abstracts and full text on the Internet.
Initially with the University of Colombo but later with the National Science Foundation (NSF), Sri Lanka a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by INASP to facilitate a gradual transfer of the responsibility of management of the SLJOL website and the database. In 2013, the process of gradual transfer of responsibility to the National Science Library and Resource Centre (NSLRC) of the NSF in managing the SLJOL was initiated by INASP with its continued support. From March 2018, the total administrative responsibility of managing SLJOL was taken over by the NSF.
The National Science Foundation, a state funded institution under the Ministry of Technology & Research is committed to generate knowledge, dissemination and transfer of knowledge and, more importantly, to ensure the effective utilization of knowledge, for the greater benefit of the people of Sri Lanka. The foundation supports, and embraces, research in all fields of fundamental and applied sciences as well as in the social sciences.
SLJOL uses the Open Journals System created by the Public Knowledge Project based in Canada. This software is open source and allows the journal content listed on SLJOL to be indexed through Open Archives Initiative search engines dedicated to research, which harvest the metadata for each journal article, making this work readily available to a global audience, and giving the journals greater visibility among the worldwide research community. The site is now hosted by Ubiquity Press.
The primary goal of SLJOL is to facilitate worldwide access to the full text of Sri Lankan Journals - either by hosting the full text online or redirecting users seamlessly to existing websites. We envisage SLJOL providing a range of online full text access models for journals, from complete open access to only subscribed access, with hybrid models of restricted access. On the current SLJOL system open access to full text is already possible. It is also hoped that the journals on the service will soon begin to allow online submission of articles and that they will conduct the whole editorial process in this online environment.
While SLJOL hosts journals, is takes no responsibility for the content on the journals made available on this site. SLJOL accepts content from journals in good faith, with the understanding that the material to be placed on the website contains nothing that is libellous, illegal, or an infringement of anyone's copyright or other rights. SLJOL retains the right to refuse to place any content on the website, and to remove anything that it considers to be either unsuitable or could lead to legal action.

INASP
The Journals OnLine project was part of the Strengthening Research and Knowledge Systems Programme (SRKS) at INASP which provided support to researchers around the world through access to information and training and support for the use of information. Other JOL projects are: Bangladesh Journals Online (BanglaJOL), Latin America Journals Online (LAMJOL), Mongolia Journals Online (MongoliaJOL) and (Nepal Journals Online (NepJOL). INASP also developed and managed African Journals Online (AJOL) until 2005, when management was transferred to an African Non Profit Organisation of the same name – see www.ajol.info for more information.
Another INASP project is AuthorAID which is a global research community that provides networking, mentoring, resources and training for researchers in developing countries.

Ubiquity Press
The new SLJOL website was launched on 26th February 2015 in collaboration with Ubiquity Press. They are an open access publisher of peer-reviewed academic journals, books, and data. Ubiquity Press was founded by researchers at University College London (UCL) in 2012. They believe that the aim of academic publishing should be the widest possible dissemination of research, and are therefore 100% open access. To enhance the reuse potential and impact of research they also strongly support the publishing of associated resources such as data and software.
They are a spin-off company, originally based on campus in the UCL Advances Centre for Entrepreneurship and Business Interaction, in the Business Hatchery, and now have their own offices in Central London. They maintain close ties with the university startup community.
To be as close to research as possible they support university and society-based publishing. As well as operating their own highly cost effective press, they also provide access to the platform to give universities and societies the infrastructure and services they need to run their own presses, and allow societies to earn income from open access.
SLJOL is grateful to Sida for their support in the development of this project. University of Colombo was involved in the early stages of the project. The National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka now manage and support the service.
