What is Biobased Content Certification?
The SCS-114 Standard for Biobased Content specifies the criteria for third-party certification of biobased content in materials. This certification is applicable when the biobased content is derived from either mass balance allocation or physical segregation methods using eligible biomass sources. The standard recognizes materials that are certified to a wide range of credible certification schemes (such as ISCC, RSB, 2BS, Bonsucro, Proterra, and others) and allows for the mixing of different certified materials, providing one Chain of Custody standard for multiple certified inputs and one consolidated biocontent claim on the output.
SCS-114 is pertinent to any material integrated into a product for which the organization makes a claim regarding its biobased content and allows organizations to demonstrate the traceability of biobased content back to a certified source of biomass through a certified chain of entities.
Certification to the SCS-114 standard, conducted by SCS Global Services, adds significant value to clients' businesses by enhancing their sustainability credentials, improving market competitiveness, reducing risks, increasing supply chain transparency, and fostering meaningful stakeholder engagement. It ensures broad acceptance of third-party certified materials from various sustainable sources that meet the requirements.

1. Submit SCS Application Form
Fill out an SCS Application form to provide details about your site and operations. SCS will then send you a proposal outlining the scope of work, timeline, and quotation. To proceed, sign and return the proposal along with a work order.
2. Pre-Assessment (Optional)
Review your current systems and practices against SCS 114 standards to identify areas needing improvement before a full audit. Consider conducting a pre-assessment with SCS.
3. Schedule Audit
SCS assigns an auditor and proposes audit dates. Upon confirmation, an audit plan is provided to ensure that your team is prepared.
4. On-Site / Virtual Audit
An assessment of your operations is conducted to evaluate conformity with the SCS 114 standard. Following the audit, the SCS auditor presents an Audit Report detailing any non-conformities. You can discuss these findings and ask questions with the auditor at the closing meeting.
5. Address Non-Conformities
You must address identified non-conformities and provide evidence of corrective actions to SCS within a specified timeframe. In some cases, an auditor may need to conduct a follow-up audit to verify implementation of corrective actions.
6. Certification Decision
SCS reviews the Audit Report and evidence of corrective action to make a certification decision.
7. Certificate issuance
For those who achieve certification, a final audit report and certificate are issued. Additionally, SCS can offer client marketing support.
