Introduction-
Global blueprint adopted by world leaders at the United
Nations Millennium in September 2000 by 189 countries.
Target year: 2015.
Aim: Tackle poverty, hunger, disease, gender inequality, and
environmental degradation.

Millennium Development Goals (2000–2015)


• Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
• Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education
• Goal 3: Promote gender equality & empower women
• Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
• Goal 5: Improve maternal health
• Goal 6 : Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
• Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
• Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development
Achievements:

Goal 1 - Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger


• Extreme poverty halved: from ~50% (1990) to
~14% (2015)
• People living under $1.25/day dropped from 1.9B
to 836M
Goal 2 - •Achieve

across regions.
• Significant rise in enrollment rates.
• Universal completion not achieved—~58M
primary-aged
children still out of school by 2015.
Goal 3 - Promote Gender Equality & Empower Women
• Gender parity achieved in primary &

education in many areas.
• Women’s participation in political and
economic
life increased, but gaps remain same.
Goal 4 - Reduce Child Mortality
• Under-5 mortality reduced by ~50% (12.7M
deaths in
1990 → 6.3M in 2013).
• Measles deaths down 74% due to expanded
immunization.
Goal 5 Improve Maternal Health
• Maternal deaths fell from ~523,000 (1990)
to ~289,000 (2013).
• Target of three-quarters reduction not fully
met.

Goal 6 Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and Other


Diseases
• HIV new infections dropped by 38% (2001–
2013).
• Malaria and TB deaths saw major declines.
Goal 7 Ensure Environmental Sustainability
• 2.6B people gained access to improved drinking
water.
• Mixed results on sanitation, biodiversity
protection, and
climate measures.

Goal 8 - Develop a Global Partnership for Development


• Expanded access to affordable medicines and
technology.
• Increased cooperation between developed and
developing nations.
• Impact measurement varied across sectors.
Overall Impact of MDGs
 ~21 million extra lives saved (2000–2015).
 Child mortality reduction : 8.8–17.3M lives.
 HIV/AIDS treatment : ~8.7M lives.
 TB control : ~3.1M lives.
 Maternal mortality reduction : ~0.5M lives.
 Marked progress, but several goals
remained partially.
